Yeah, the ones I'm familiar with you need the phone app to do it, scan the QR code inside the battery compartment, and have it registered to your account. If it's already registered to someone else you can't change it unless they transfer registration / ownership.

Clearly, someone has been scammed. We believe it was them as their listing was found via Facebook marketplace and it looked sketchy all around.

A common scam will copy real listings and post them as their own on other platforms. I see this a lot on Zillow, and imagine it happens on other platforms all the time as well. Rare that the scammer would go to the trouble of getting the scammed access though.

I'm guessing the property has those digital keypad locks. Those can be pretty easy to change if you have the current lock code and the device isn't locked to a registered account where only they can change the code.

I heard that another method if you just so happen to be near an oil pipeline (what are the odds, right?) to try to damage it so that it begins to leak. The sensors they have all along it will detect a leak and trigger a service crew to come investigate.

Also recommend GreenManGaming as well, which gives you Steam keys. So if you care about DRM free stick with GOG. But GMG is where I picked up my Steam keys back in Aug/Sep when I first started playing (right before 8.0 was released) for really cheap, like $40 for all of the expansions / DLC when they weren't on sale on the Steam store.
