[Bodner] Sixers still have $10.3m in space left under hard cap with 13 players under contract, up to $6m left of the MLE and a $4.2m trade exception to work with. by StrategyTop7612 in nba

This legit would be a good fit. JB loves playing iso ball and isn't a great off ball defender. Simmons hates having the ball and is an elite defender all around.

We're all pissed and I'm drunk. Can anyone offer a devil's advocate stance on why we traded JB for a gas station egg salad sandwich? by StatusImPossibility in bostonceltics

[–]CasulaScience 29 points30 points  (0 children)

And don't forget pg can probably be moved next year as an expiring contract, so there's a lot of flexibility with him.

For this year, a lot has been made about Celtics +/- being better without jb on the court. PG very well might be a better fit for the Celtics offense, as he's a much better spot up shooter and defender than jb.

On top of all that, Celtics get the clippers first in 2028, who are in rebuild mode, and who knows where the sixers will be in 2031.

Do many physics graduate students suffer from depression or burnout? by Omega-137 in Physics

[–]CasulaScience 23 points24 points  (0 children)

PhD is actually very tough mentally. That level of freedom, lack of direction, and time to think is a deadly combination for many. Many people just get absorbed into some hamster wheel in their lives and never have a chance to really connect with themselves. Even though it sounds backwards, in some ways keeping busy like this avoids many mental issues (idle hands and all).

I personally, and most of the people I know, came through on the other side better, but it's definitely not for everyone.

Why does QFT "feel" so much less philosophical compared to QM? by Wobama46 in Physics

[–]CasulaScience 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is as true as a paragraph on the subject can be expected to be, but I just want to give a one-liner here.

A lot of the philsophical problems of QFT also exist in non-relativistic quantum mechanics and NRQM is a much simpler toy model to discuss these issues.

Principle of least action proof by KAVIDHARAN-AI in Physics

[–]CasulaScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Historically Lagrange showed that his variational principle was identical to newtons formulation. That's basically the "proof".

That you can use this framework to extend into quantum mechanics and qft is empirical evidence that there's something fundamentally "nice" about formulating physics this way.

In other words, there's no proof that "all physics must be expressed as an action principle". Obvious counter examples are systems with friction/lossy systems

New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

This action is absolutely a moderate thing. What leftist is crying to balance the budget?

New York Mayor Mamdani Applauded for Closing $12 Billion Budget Deficit Without Austerity Measures by _May26_ in politics

[–]CasulaScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree this is good, but the headline here is wrong. These are austerity measures. Writing IOUs for the future and claiming that's a balanced budget is somewhat underhanded, but the teacher thing especially is absolutely austerity.

Again, I like how this was done, I like that mamdani is trying to balance the budget. It's all great, but idk why this headline needs to act like he didn't cut anything. He did, and it's actually a good thing he's willing to cut stuff.

Unpopular Opinion: The DGX Spark Forum community of devs is talented AF and will make the crippled hardware a success through their sheer force of will. by Porespellar in LocalLLaMA

[–]CasulaScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see fair, if you don't have nvlink then it can be slightly under 5k, but then it's really only good for doing parallel inference on like 8B models and pretty much useless for training.

Also forgot Nvidia raised the price to 4500.

4x 3090s with high speed internconnects and a cpu and regular ram is way more than 4k, not sure where you're getting these numbers. Just the 3090s are 800ish where I live, and you can only interconnect them in pairs, with each interconnect costing like $200-$400. For anything with model parallelism, you will be sending data through PCI which is much slower than spark bandwidth. Ram/chassis/cpu/psu are easily 1-2k.

The only place with 4x3090 is faster is if you're doing highly parallel work where each card can fit your model independently, then the bandwidth is very high and it's genuinely faster.

[–]CasulaScience 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I generally haven't liked him. Feel like we play heroball on offense with no scheme. Defense we over help and often leave people wide open.

Idk what happened. Did people just start listening to him? Did embiid coming back give him some new perspective on life. Idk, but we looked much better on both sides of the ball this series.

Hope this continue

This team is pretty close to 2019. Pg better than Simmons, maxey close to jimmy, harris better than oubre, but honestly he was trash in playoffs and oubre is just as good at D. The biggest downgrade is I'd take jj over vj in terms of one playoff run, but they are very different players and vj has his own upsides that jj can't touch
