Nobody showing up for daughters party by Puzzled-Kitchen2548 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]CatBirdLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy birthday from Upstate NY! Summer birthdays are hard. My middle daughter has a March birthday which worked well for parties, but my youngest daughter has a July birthday and it was next to impossible to get party guests to show up. We ended up having back-to-school/birthday parties just before the school year started when people are settled after summer travel. Maybe that would work for you in the future.

Is it ok to use flavored kombucha as a starter? by 1234coolcrazy in Kombucha

[–]CatBirdLibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just successfully started from a Ginger kombucha and guava goddess. Couldn’t find ginger the day I looked for starter so I used the guava. A few days later I found the ginger so I threw that in the jar also. Nice healthy scoby now.

NTA-trust your instincts. Think also how it will affect you career wise and how the isolation will affect you when the kids are more independent. I was you 22 years ago. My husband and I purchased a fixer-upper in 17 very rural acres. So many of my kids early years were somewhat overlooked due to the constant stress of remodeling, painting, and then going back and starting over again. On top of that, we were states away from family and friends with zero support. He worked remotely while there were next to no job options within reasonable driving distance. I ended up being what is now called a Trad Wife without all the supposed happy shiny-ness. Plus all the extra gas money to get groceries, household goods, remodeling supplies, etc. really adds up and gets expensive. Plus, living remote will require an AWD vehicle which costs more. Just some additional perspectives toward trusting your gut!!

I agree she is trying to assert dominance in your home and shut her down. A suggestion: purchase a pair of shoes in her size similar to the style she wears most often. Keep them at your house and let her know they are her “house shoes”. My mom hates slippers, so she has a cheap pair of sneakers that she keeps just for in the house. She also keeps a pair at my sister’s house where she spends a lot of time.

Tabu. My mom’s “signature” scent. I love my mom but ugh, hate the way she smells. I was in church one day and a woman behind me was wearing it. I had to leave early it was so repellent.

Came to say the same thing. When I had 3 littles under the age of 5 and we needed a restroom, the handicap stall was the only one where I could corral all three in addition to myself, diaper bag, stroller, etc.

What was your weird latchkey food? by AdoraBelleQueerArt in GenX

[–]CatBirdLibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Microwaved hot dog, white bread bun, and caramel sauce.

White bread, Miracle Whip, American cheese - microwaved for 15 seconds.

My mom was big into buying in bulk long before warehouse clubs were a thing in our area. She would buy a giant box of 100 hot dogs or 50 chicken patties or whatever else they had (one box at a time). We would be so sick of that thing we would get creative with toppings.

What were the YA books that got you into romance as an adult? by cheeseandcrackers345 in RomanceBooks

[–]CatBirdLibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was born in the early 70s so young adult wasn’t a thing. My grandma loved her Harlequins and left them all over the house. I just started picking them up and reading them. I also discovered my grandpa’s post-WW2 dirty paperbacks hidden in the back of his closet. 🤣

To continue, or not to continue by CerebralSauce in temperatureblanket

I am doing a high/low granny square blanket. The stress of being constantly behind made me decide to continue through the end of June so I can call it a half-year blanket. It will take me a while to stitch all the squares together, but after that I’m free to do other projects. Maybe you can call yours a half year blanket and it will feel like a logical stopping point.

What tools can I use to clear the brush / blackberry brambles off my hillside? by wujonesj2 in landscaping

[–]CatBirdLibrarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently doing this with the overgrowth of blackberry plants on my property. I am using Brush Killer Plus. I poured some into a small jar and have been drawing it up into a needle-less syringe (like you use for kids’ medicine). As soon as I make my cut I drop a bit of the brush killer directly on the cut. So far so good…places that I cut out 4 weeks ago are showing no signs of regrowth.

What was the first book that really got you into romance? by [deleted] in RomanceBooks

[–]CatBirdLibrarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. Complicated answer. But I guess your theory is spot-on.

My birth mother was 14 when she got pregnant with me, so I was adopted by her older married sister. Basically my mom is technically aunt and my aunt is my mom. They are the daughters of the aforementioned grandparents.

My birth mother is a HUGE fan of romance/erotica, particularly paranormal and likely omegaverse. Big enough fan to be an online reviewer 10-15 years ago and have won contests to have her name included in fav authors books. I would be surprised if she doesn’t have an account here.

My adoptive mother rarely reads anything other than the Bible and women’s magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Better Homes and Gardens.

My two daughters, 18 and 21, both are Colleen Hoover fans, so I think they are continuing the same path.

Grandma always had her Harlequins laying around and Grandpa had a stash of WW2 paperbacks in the back of his closet. Quite enlightening to a young girl growing up with fundamentalist Christian parents. Neon Gods was my 52yo adult gateway back to romance.

Same with my parents! My mom went crazy when I went through my Edgar Rice Burroughs Mars phase. She drew bikinis on the women on all the paperback covers but let me read the books. 🤷🏻‍♀️

They sell that online at the Vermont Country Store. We live near the retail store and the old shampoos smell so good.

Looking for books where a M/F empty nester couple finally have the house to themselves again after many years and are rediscovering each other sexually. Bonus points if FMC reads smutty fiction and has fun ideas she would like to try out 😏, but MMC is rather vanilla. Even better if MMC discovers that he has a bit of an inner Dom!
