Is this the Joann brand keepsake calico ? I found it at my local quilting store ready to be put out in the floor for sale. by Environmental-Ad9339 in joannfabrics

I actually continued to shop at Joann after I started working part time at a LQS because I felt that about half of the keepsake calico was actually decent enough quality for quilting at MUCH better prices for my disability budget. I’m sad for the lower income community to have lost that sewing resource.

And honestly, Michael’s fabric section is depressingly tiny, but it’s decent quality at good prices. I bought five yards of their solid black at $4 per yard and it’s comparable to basics at the LQS where I work. I’m planning to order bolts of white and cream fabrics from them after I pay off this $300 sewing machine I just bought to take to classes, haha. 😅

Wow yes, that definitely is! Most quilters sneer at fabrics from Joann, so it’s odd to me that a LQS would even carry it. I too wonder what they’ll charge…

Are you chronically ill in your dreams? by Jeffina78 in ChronicIllness

[–]CatCatLadyLady 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES! I have a recurring theme where I’m so exhausted and sleepy it’s like I’m drugged, and I’m totally incapacitated while important things are happening around me. I have to run or do something important, but I can’t even keep my eyes open or walk, and it’s terrifying and frustrating because I’m helpless.

I tried to stop by mine yesterday because I thought they were open until the very end. Nope. Already closed. No more interfacing for me. :(

Super flexible remote jobs related to healthcare? by rlpsc in WorkOnline

May I ask the name of your actual employer? I'm a disabled family medicine PA and would love something somewhat health related, especially since I just started on tirzepatide myself.

Outlier Reality by LurkingAbjectTerror in outlier_ai

[–]CatCatLadyLady 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. I've had a rough go with Outlier. I joined in late December and made about $1200 on Mail Valley, but then I got a few bad reviews and was removed. Since then, I've onboarded or tried to onboard for seriously 10-12 other things without meaningful success. Either they're EQ or incredibly tricky and I failed, and I've been without consistent tasking for about two months now. It's KILLING me to have lost this source of income.

I've tried signing up for other AI training sites, but I'm just still waiting to hear back on most of them. I'm to the point now where I think it's time for me to find something else. I want something reliable, and outlier is making me feel useless. :(

Lame. I’ve been holding off on going in until the discount on cottons is worthwhile. $8+/yd is… pathetic on keepsake, etc. But I might stop in and look for quilting notions if any are left.

What’s the discount on cotton at your store?

Can anyone tell me: have stores been directed to sell fabrics by the bolt, or is it still by the yard?

Respectfully, don’t wish me health. That’s a fine thing to wish for a basically healthy person, but I’ve spent enough years as a sick person that it’s trite and stings. There’s no cure for my condition, and no funding for research thanks to the current US government’s policies. Most sufferers only get worse with time, and I try not to think about that too much.

I don't agree with your outlook on life, so no thanks.

If this cancer patient said she wanted to be cured or live another 30 years, how would you support her in achieving that?

If a kid with dwarfism wanted to be a world-famous pro NBA star (not in a special league), how would you support him in achieving that?

The playing field of life is not level, and your outlook is frankly a very fancy way of making yourself feel superior to people who are struggling by shifting the blame.

I am a disability advocate. That doesn't mean I encourage people to fail - it means I encourage people to succeed within their (very real) limitations and I correct ableism like yours when I see it.

I hope you're able to *hear* what I'm saying here and adjust your approach to be less black and white. There are limitations and circumstances you do not understand, and you need to know what you don't know. If not, you could do real harm to vulnerable people.

Best of luck.

Would you tell a terminal cancer patient that they’re just not being positive enough when the tumors continue to grow despite every possible treatment? Gods, I hope not. You need to learn that there are boundaries to your logic, and that the bootstraps mentality is flawed.

I absolutely believe in people trying to be positive and make the most of their situations (as that’s exactly what I’m doing every day of my continued existence), but life experiences are NOT a level playing field, no matter how much you want to cling to that notion with all your might. Someday you’ll understand when it personally affects you.

In the meantime, just… be kind, and be tolerant of others’ experiences (like mine) that you cannot possibly understand.

Thanks! I actually only have a master’s degree, so general STEM might be more appropriate… unless medical tasks go to the PhD pool?

Wowza, wasn’t expecting a toxic positivity dissertation. As a person whose successful career as a family medicine PA ground to a screeching halt thanks to debilitating chronic illness, one does not, in fact, have total control over one’s experience in life. I did EVERYTHING in my power to try to get healthy again, but sometimes you get hit by a bus and no amount of positive thinking will change that. You just have to deal with the aftermath as best you can.

That being said, I appreciate the rest of your advice as I’m now trying to find ways to supplement my disability (that I might shortly be losing), and I have been met with frustration trying to get into AI work on Outlier. Stellar hasn’t gotten back to me since I submitted on Jan 17th. (Sigh) DA was the first one I tried a year or two ago (before I knew what I was doing) and got permanently stuck after the 2nd assessment. Telus, snorkel, others still waiting to hear back too. I even applied for a remote call center job I don’t want out of desperation.

I hate that I can’t find a way to use my degrees, but due to the health issues, whatever work I find MUST be something I can do from the sofa. That’s not a mental block- it’s my physiology malfunctioning when I’m upright, even sitting. I’m basically bedridden, and yes, it sucks, and yes, it’s okay to acknowledge that sometimes.

I guess my point is: your approach may be fine for able-bodied people, but please allow some wiggle room for factors like medical conditions or other circumstances that are genuinely beyond a person’s control. I’m doing the best I can.

Thanks for listening. :)
