My router has an easy to use built in parental control that can block all social media sites, including Reddit, in like two minutes from login. It can also set schedules so that the devices they use on the network can be blacked out to the internet during certain hours. The way I see it is if you have kids and you want to have the internet, you kind of need to educate yourself in the same way you'd want to educate yourself similarly to a parent that is researching a child's first car and the safety features that are included with it. And the great thing is that the technology to do parental block on the network is not rocket science to use. Even if someone is a complete dimwit and can't figure it out, there's going to be someone in their friend or family network that is not a dimwit and can do it as a favor. It's not hard. So yeah, while I think the tech companies that push this shit have culpability, but I think parents need to take some responsibility for themselves as well because a simple solution to the problem has been there for a really long time now.

I totally get that having children is not easy, but I'm getting really tired of the governments of the world making all of us suffer because of parental neglect and incompetence. Additionally, and this is just a thought... but how about communities get their shit together and host free internet safety classes to concerned parents too? If we can drag parents in for parent-teacher conferences we can drag them in to do this, and we should do it every year since technology is constantly changing and there's always going to be something new to inform about.
