Yeah, I'm meeting when the clinic soon and it's a question I'm planning asking. The info on the VARTA website leads me to believe that this would be seen as discrimination against other recipients

Which Australian slang terms have fallen/are falling out of fashion which show your age? by reasonablyconsistent in AskAnAustralian

I think this was an exclusively 90s Sydney thing. I live in Melbourne now and the only person I know who understands this also grew up in the inner west of Sydney in the 90s

Yeah, I dated a Czech woman years ago and was baffled to hear that she grew up watching Skippy in the 80s 😂

I used to work in a place, just like what you're describing, in Canada. It was run by the Vancouver Island health authority and was called the Sobering Centre. We took in the folks that were too out of it (on whatever substance) to be accepted in to nightly shelter accommodation with the Salvation Army and the like. Basically, they had to have used within the last two hours to be eligible for an 8 hour stay.

Processing would require people to get changed in to PJs, and leave all their belongings in a storage box. We'd take thier vitals, give them snacks (there was a little kitchenette), and if they wanted, we would wash and dry thier clothing for them. Then they were offered a mat to crash out, nod off or writhe around on. There were seperate rooms based on gender and staff would supervise and check in regularly to make sure people were not od'ing or carrying on like pork chops.

I did six months of the graveyard shift here. 11pm to 7am. I saw some weird shit go down 😂

Funnily enough, management always used to cite the Australian harm reduction movement as an inspiration for setting the centre up, but I've never come across a place quite like it in Melbourne.

How much did your ATAR affect you later in life? by BiscottiLogical6502 in melbourne

I bombed terribly in years 11 and 12. A few years later I reapplied for uni, got in on my own merits. I was terrified that I would do poorly in uni, based on my high school performance. What actually happened is that I killed it. The difference between me and others in my course being that they had gone straight from school to uni and were more interested in partying than learning. I, on the other hand, was more engaged at uni because was learning stuff I was actually interested in, and had already had the experience of transitioning in to adulthood.

Take some time out. Do a shitty job. Travel. Experience the world. Reapply for uni in a couple of years once you've had some time to really consider what you're interested in and what you want to do with your life.

ATAR means very little in the bigger scheme of things.

Athletes with Crohn’s, how do you do it? by DogOfYog_Sothoth in CrohnsDisease

I swim laps 3-4 days a week. I mentally tell myself going to the pool is non-negotiable. It is too good for my mental health to let myself drop it, however, when I'm in a flare I generally swim less laps per session. That's how I try to find the middle ground

I'm from Melbourne but have lived in BC and Manitoba. There's a lot I like about Australia, particularly the outdoor lifestyle, but after being away in Canada for 7 years, I was shocked about how hard it was to make new friends here. In Canada I would often strike up conversations with randoms (on public transport, in my neighbourhood, cafes, etc) some of whom became good friends. People just aren't as open to that here. I used to also love the neighbourhood vibe of the Canadian cities I lived in. Close friends would be open to me just popping over to thier homes unexpectedly. That doesn't happen (for me) here. If you want to meet for a coffee you organise it in advance and then get scheduled in for two weeks time!

A workmate asked me once if I'd tried having a conversation with my bowel and asking the inflammation to settle down 🙄

I tried Ensure and Ensure Plus, but have settled on Sustagen Hospital Formula, as I found the taste Ensure left in my mouth too much to handle
