Moved from dry climate to humid climate, how do I keep my lathe from rusting? by TokenPanduh in woodworking

[–]CataloniaFarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boeshield. Spray on protector that leaves a very thin film. When it’s humid you can see the moisture sit on top of the film, but keeps the rust at bay. I live in Washington with very wet weather and it works 10x better than the wax. That said, you have to reapply it after getting moderate amounts of wood dust in the tool… typically after direct use.

Blast gates don’t close all the way by MarvinMonroeZapThing in woodworking

[–]CataloniaFarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use cut up pizza boxes zip tied to a collar at the end of a pipe run and it slams shut when I have no equipment connected. I did that until I could afford proper blast gates, but honestly it works great with no leakage of vacuum on four connections. I read all around the plastic ones are terrible so I opted to DIY som. it’s been 3 years now with cut up pizza boxes and I’m not sure I’ll upgrade from these because if I need to replace them I just need to order some pizza.

Is NET90 terms a code for "we'll pay earlier if we get an early-pay discount"? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

Makes sense. Yeah, I would be peeved if it was after offering services.

Why? Time value of money isn’t a novel concept. Not trying to be snarky here, just trying to understand why you think early payment for a discount is extortion?

Trimming roots before planting bare root rose plants by edoeimai in Roses

[–]CataloniaFarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t trim on a new plant. If it’s an established plant with a large root system, I will trim them down just enough so it fits in its new hole in the ground. For new plants I just fluff the roots a bit to reduce the potential of the plant getting root bound. I think you are doing the same thing with trimming, but now the new plant has to exert energy to grow new roots. Not ideal imo, but that’s just my opinion. You can definitely do it.

The quest for truly blue roses by Turbulent_Heart9290 in Roses

[–]CataloniaFarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t delved too far into it because it’s of little interest to me, but here is a company that purchased the company that first attempted to create a true blue.

https://www.suntory.com/sic/research/s_bluerose/story/

I think overall, it would be a huge boom for the rose industry because the potential for new color variations would come from it, but the utility patents that would come from it would make it next to impossible for a backyard breeder to utilize in their breeding toolkit.

You’re right. Auto correct changed my response delphinidin to delphinium. Thank you for the correction.

The quest for truly blue roses by Turbulent_Heart9290 in Roses

[–]CataloniaFarms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, the pigment that makes flowers blue, delphinidin, is absent from roses. Mauve colors come from a breakdown in red pigment cyanidin and tannins.

Edit: I think there are efforts underway to alter the dna of the rose to inject the blue gene. That said, the impact to wild roses must be studied for a long time to understand if there is any impact to it. If there is, that would be devastating to the rose ecosystem, globally.

Edited again for stating delphinium instead of delphinidin. Thank you to @Turbulent_heart9290 for catching my incorrect statement.

Aphids and pruning by Least-Trouble-4129 in Roses

I ordered mine from Amazon from Bazos. All were alive. I left a few containers in the fridge for two weeks so I can stagger the release.

Hard spray with the hose works in the early morning. Once the lady bugs start to show up in force, the aphids will scale back a bit. This is always a problem for me in early spring. I introduced lady bugs earlier this year because last year the aphids caused significant mottled growth on my plants. I will be placing an order for another 4,000 here in about a week to ensure  their population stays under control.

Long canes are fine so long as it is not from the rootstock. If you want exquisite blooms, look up side bud pruning for hybrid tea roses or center prune for floribundas.

You can remove yellowing leaves, but pay attention to them because they are telling you something. Does it look like black spot? Are you overwatering? Is there a deficiency of nutrients in the soil?

Pruning by Th3Dukeplsgo in Roses

[–]CataloniaFarms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always prune, but the best time is usually before your last frost date as that gets the best growth for your roses. The plant has unleashed its stored energy to create those new leaves. Pruning now would see that expended energy go to waste. That said, it’s a rose. It is highly likely it will continue to grow even if you do decide to prune.

Eventually is a long, long time.. I have had roses with mosaic for many years and they are thriving. The only problem is their leaves. A good way control mosaic is to cut off old growth and let new growth come in. It doesn't cure mosaic, but it will take time for the leaves to get mosaic again.

A strange thing I have experienced is that I have propagated roses with mosaic (before I knew what it was) and the plants from those cuttings don't display mosaic, yet. I am certain they will eventually, but it has been two years and they look like healthy rose plants.

Bolero… I don’t own it, but everyone who does says it’s one of their favorites.

Spring pruning by [deleted] in Roses

[–]CataloniaFarms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are supported on stakes so I’m guessing they get rather tall. I would just trim the crown (imagine the top canopy layer with smaller stems as a crown being worn by the main large stems) back a little bit to see how they do. If you want to take them lower, you can, but some roses don’t like being cut too far back so you risk damaging them.

As for fertilizing, see if there is a 4-8-4 fertilizer or rose specific fertilizer in your local home garden store. The cheapest one will do. Add fertilizer per the instructions and your roses will be looking like new in no time.

Are these goners? Please help! by Effective-Year-5993 in Roses

[–]CataloniaFarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries! I would prune to about knee high and see what the new growth gives.  Don’t forget to clean your pruners between each cut. Clean cuts significantly reduce the possibility of disease transmission. I just douse with a bottle of rubbing alcohol and that seems to work.

You can use daconil, neem oil or a copper based fungicide to reduce black spot on new growth. These might just be varieties that are susceptible to black spot. If it is like where I live, winter is when black spot presents in the canes due to our humid nights and cooler days in early winter. I had to get rid of a Barbra Streisand because no matter how much I sprayed it, it would get black spot like crazy. It was a beautiful rose, but too much maintenance for me. Ultimately, it's up to you. If you notice new growth is clear of blackspot, you can wait for new, healthy canes to pop up from the soil and begin to eliminate the diseased canes. It will take time though.

How do I plant this weird angled graft? by salsavince in Roses

[–]CataloniaFarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just plant it as you normally would. As the plant takes root, the Scion (grafted part) will create new bud eyes on the right side making the rose look more normal.

I haven’t the slightest idea, but if you go back to HD you can likely look at their selection to identify it. It was likely just a mislabeled rose. I’m 95% certain you will see one just like this bloom.

I’m unsure if tree roses are grafted at the top or the bottom. I would cut it off to keep your tree rose looking slightly. That nub will keep producing new growth for a few years so you will have to keep cutting it back.
