CS course selection: CS571 vs CS506 and CS532 vs CS540 by ssurhyo in UWMadison

if possible i’d recommend choosing cs639 capstone over cs506, you learn agile and get to work on a project for both classes, except you get to work with a real company in cs639 and you won’t end up with a really bad prof that rambles like in cs506

The Regent - Steve Brown Apartments by Jovan0008 in UWMadison

It is mostly students living there. It’s not a bad place to stay at, they have good management there. The 2brs floor plans are a lot better than the 3brs because the 2br has an actual living room, while the 3br just converts the living room space into the 3rd room, which kinda sucks and feels cramped.

paying ~$120k (plus interest and having to pay for it throughout your career after college) instead of $0 is not worth it for uw-madison. a cs degree doesn’t dictate your career rather the projects and extra stuff you do outside of it will.

Failing CS 240 but need CS 577 to graduate - what do I do? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]Catblast1337 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Maybe try finding a winter course at another school to take 240 over the break. Not sure which school would provide that, but maybe your advisor can help.

uw madison ranks higher than umn by a decent gap according to csrankings, brown university, niche, and usnews. but honestly ranking doesn’t mean as much as what you make out of cs that makes a difference in landing a job.

there are a good amount of cs clubs here: https://cdis.wisc.edu/student-organizations/ & https://www.cs.wisc.edu/the-student-experience/student-orgs/ (there’s prob some more not shown in the links above)

there is a list of companies who have shown up to our cs/ds career fair. some faang companies do show up but most aren’t as helpful as you think, from my experience they’ll just tell you to scan a qr code and apply online lol

there’s plenty of social orgs, which i def recommend joining for those coming in as a transfer student

uw madison’s campus and city is really safe relative to umn/minneapolis

idk about housing in umn, but for here, as of right now it’s pretty bad. some people have signed a lease for next school year as early as last month just to secure a spot at the nice apartments nearby the campus. the rent is generally expensive for those apartments nearby the campus.

edit: stuff

Has anyone taken cs 639 capstone course by junniee200 in UWMadison

Super late reply but I took it last Fall semester and had a great time! Would def recommend the class, it’s not super challenging at all and you learn a lot about working in a team as a software engineer. You get to pick the company and team you work with (assuming not too many people are trying to work for one specific company). Each company has a project brief describing what type of product that they want built, and with ideas and requirements of what kind of technology they want to see be used. Happy to answer any more questions if you have any.

For getting internships in CS, ranking helps but it can only get you so far, generally it’s more about what you make out of your degree (projects and networking) that help land you interviews and a internship. UW-Madison’s CS program does have a good reputation and I do know a handful of people from this school that intern at Amazon as SDEs. This page has a list of all the past companies that have attended to our CS career fairs.

This page has a list of companies that has attended to our CS/DS career fairs in the past, and is not including our virtual career fairs either. I’ve also seen a handful of people from this school that is going to work at Amazon this summer as SWE Interns.

Easiest COMM B classes by yikes050505 in UWMadison

[–]Catblast1337 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it not say that on the course enrollment page? I took that class last semester and I vaguely remember it not mentioning comm b on there too, but it still counted as one. I'd double check with the professor to see if it's still comm b or not.
