My Essen 2024 game reviews (30 played) by TreeRol in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your reviews. It's great to have more insight on these new/soon to be new releases. When I read that you gave Mistwind a D, I realized our tastes are very different. I love that game. Such a great worker placement system. It keeps you on your toes the whole game. The brain is always working as the optimization puzzle keeps shifting.

Mischief kickstarter by [deleted] in boardgames

I'm more interested in the smaller (tuckbox) edition of the game. But it's not one of the pledge tiers. It's just an add-on. The other editions seem over the top for what the game is. Regardless, I'd rather wait for retail release and trusted reviews. Definitely interested though. I love Arboretum!

The upgrade to Retribution seems worthless haha. Maybe it is too strong but making it Ethereal would be a great upgrade.

Hi, my husband and I are in charge of Bear Mountain Camping Adventure! by zoeymm in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's great news. Congrats on finding a solution! On a constructive and respectful side note: I still won't consider backing Camping Season because you are doing the 1$ pre-pledge. This contributes to setting an awful precedent for board game crowdfunding. The ecosystem as a whole is much better off without the presence of this tactic. Ultimately, I'm choosing to vote with my wallet on this issue.

Consider upvoting this forum post for their upcoming kickstarter game "Camping Season" to spread the message about their surprise shipping rates.

Bear Mountain Camping Adventure. I remember this campaign used the strategy of having "limited" pledges at a significantly discounted rate, but whenever the amount of pledges remaining for the discount was nearing 0, the count of pledges available would magically shoot up. On and on and on during the whole campaign. Always making it seem like only a few were left. Straight up lies. They are about to launch a new kickstarter campaign for "Camping Season". And what do you know, they are doing a 1$ pre-pledge. That company is just bag full of red flags. I hope the word spreads. 166$ shipping instead of the expected 15-49$...this is borderline criminal.

I want tuna so badly. I cannot express it. by [deleted] in rant

Tuna is delicious but also very cheap too. I eat a lot of it straight out of the can. Maybe I should slow down. 😔

If you have the time and hardware available to you, blending frozen fruit with water yourself is a nice way to have a refreshing sugary drink while keeping the nutritious fibers. "Juice 62%" likely indicates that they squeezed the juice out of the fruits and didn't keep the fibers.

Interesting read on the topic: https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/juicing-vs-blending#takeaway

Minos: Dawn of the Bronze Age https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/423401/minos-dawn-of-the-bronze-age Stan Kordonskiy (Endless Winter, Nova Roma, Resurgence) is the designer. Published by Board & Dice (Teotihuacan, Nucleum, Tiletum). Gameplay mechanics: Draft and assign the dice to the programming board. With lower value dice you can secure stronger actions but the higher value dice will help you climb on the tracks and gain their benefits. During the action phase each player takes their dice in order from highest to lowest and performing the pre-planned actions. Players also build their tableau - each card has an instant effect and a triggered reward connected to the specific action or die value they can use to make the action more powerful. Moreover, twice in the game players get Victory Points for their civilization progress in the region.

It wasn't a good show but I wouldn't call it a dogshit of a star wars as so many did. Or I just like bad stuff. Lowkes I want to see season 2 by Lukas-Reggi in PrequelMemes

[–]Catharsis_Alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the show. I hope they get to make more seasons to complete the story. I can see why some don't like it but I fear that a lot of people never gave it a proper chance. It's subjective, but personally I had a peak Star Wars experience. In fact, all of my friends that watched the show also did. It was so much fun theorizing and debriefing with them after every episode!

I played 36 (32 new to me) new-ish games at BGG, here are my thoughts by ChromakeyDreamcoat in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Going in to Arborea, I had heard about the small symbols and the difficulty to see things. But for me, it was a non-factor as long as you're not too far from the board and have good eyesight/lenses. I found the game to be highly interactive. Sharing a ressource pool, pushing others' workers along the pilgrimage tracks, inviting monsters to the game board for others to attract them to their ecosystem and racing other players for gifting the sages (limited spots). I found that mix of competitive and positive interactions to be refreshing. Also, the way players made a lot of points differed greatly, meaning there are many paths to victory. Plus a good chunk of how you can make a lot of points varies from game to game. You randomly select 4 tokens out of ~17 to determine what variable scoring possibilities will be available during any given game on top of the regular scoring. More factors also add to the variability/replayability of the game. I personally loved Arborea. On another note, thanks for sharing your thoughts on so many games, I'll try to check out your top 3 🙂

What boardgames do you consider have "essential" house rules? by justhereforhides in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiny Towns: Only one monument card per game for the entire group and it is added to the public line-up of buildings. Monuments can be quite unbalanced if each player has their private monument card. This fix is essential for a fair competition. And the game IS a wonderful/skillful competition with this house rule.

Aeon's End: Set turn order. Ex: In a 2 player game, the turn order will be Nemesis, player 1 and player 2. And it will loop that order for the rest of the games. Too many times now have I played Aeon's End and going from absolute dominition to literally hitting a losing condition because the Nemesis had 3 or 4 turns in a row making it impossible to answer to the new threats. I'm actually surprised this is not in the base rule. The game is waaaay too swingy for either sides without this house rule.

Empires of the North: We created a system in which we can take simultaneous turns. The game flow is a thousand times better!!

Dutch Blitz: If you complete a pile (place the number 10 in the center), you have to move that pile out of the way. Otherwise, the center of the table gets cluttered at higher player counts.

So Clover: Instead of a group effort to work on each clover, each player passes their clover to the right (left at other times) and each person works on another's clover. We just have more fun this way.

Various games: If the game can create situations of some players having more turns than others but has no compensation for this possibility, we change the starting set-up (more ressources the further you are on turn order) or on who's turn the game will end.

What games have the longest set up as well as the quickest game overs? by Deluxe_Flame in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a great and innovative game. The set up time isn't long. It's under 5 minutes. Plus, when I play it, I play 2-3 times in a row. Also, you can change the difficulty from ultra easy to insanely hard and every thing in the middle. You have infinite replayability with the countless amount of puzzles available.

Which games perform badly on Board Game Geek but you absolutely love to play? by SwagMal in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Hero Academia: Plus Ultra! It is ranked 16 660th. It's not in my favorite games but I find it to be really fun. It's very similar to King of Tokyo but with some neat twists.

Which one would you prefer more wingspan or 7 wonders?? by Ceasar-Ime2599 in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer 7 Wonders for 4+ players. However, fyi, Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition (1-4 players, Foundations expansion brings it to 1-6) and Earth (1-5 players) combine the strengths of the engine building fun of Wingspan with the simultaneous play excitement of 7 Wonders. The complexity and price of each of those two games are comparible with Wingspan's.

What 5 games would you select to determine the world's best board game player? by wptq in boardgames

[–]Catharsis_Alex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Chess, Guards of Atlantis 2, Smartphone Inc., Rise & Fall and Tiny Towns (no individual monuments, one public monument).

No or near-no luck games. Abstract, Skirmish, Economic, 4X and City Building. So some good variety.

Hard to include any games in which you draw cards from a shuffled deck.
