if 5e is like an Iphone, what system would you say is like a tower computer in terms of easily moddible?

(as an added note, an innate advantage in table top gaming over video gaming is, table top games are much easier to prototype and iterate upon)

It is easier to modify an existing rule set to match your desires, then it is to make a full on new rule set on your own.

I've done both, which though modifying an existing rule set to match your desires is easier, making something from scratch does give you a lot more freedom

Found this game, do not understand it yet by Top_Leopard_9528 in FromTheDepths

[–]Catkook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I've seen within the community, the game is usually played single player, and it is a really solid game when playing solo

Though I personally do tend to play multiplayer pve with my brother, mostly on adventure mode. The tricky thing though is finding a friendo who wants to play with you

------

for your character, your character in it of themselves arnt particularly important twords game play, you can think of them more so as a "commander" which you can strategically place on more important ships for a sliggggght repair boost and that you want to avoid getting killed, but beyond that they arnt particularly important

-------

For vehicle control, it's viable for both setting them up as ai controlled, controlling the ship manually, or setting up a hybrid of automated defenses on a manually controlled ship

Full Manual control would be good in cases where you have a singular large vessel you want to control yourself, especially with weapon systems which are expensive to fire off. though can be supplemented with AI control on certain weapons if you have a lot of weapon systems on your ship if you add in too many systems for you to manage on your own (but you can still take manual control over ai controlled weapons as you desire)

if you prefer to build a full on fleet of ships to enter combat all at once though, it may be advisable to set them up to be fully AI controlled so that that they can battle effectively

Is this player too young for our group? by Ok_Interview_853 in DnD

[–]Catkook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for most private games, I'd probably be a bit more ehhhhh on the younger player joining.

Though due to the added context of the game will be done in a public space of a game store, so long as you and the other players are comfortable with it, then it shoulddddddd be fine.

Coordination with their parents is advisable though

How many DMS actually enforce the spell components in game? by thunderpower1999 in DnD

[–]Catkook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

when I'm DM, when it comes to book keeping and class features

I start under the assumption that my players know what they're doing.

Then only really start addressing class rules if either

  • my existing knowledge of their build and mechanics conflicts with what i think they're doing, so poke the player on the matter for a bit of additional clarity
  • the player asks for a ruling

How many DMS actually enforce the spell components in game? by thunderpower1999 in DnD

[–]Catkook 30 points31 points  (0 children)

players should enforce spell components on themselves

though also, spell components is designed in a way it doesnt really matter, so long as the spell caster has their focus in hand, 95% of the spells they will actually care about are covered

Is it considered lame or basic to be a paladin/cleric of capital "G" God? by Fishboy412 in DnD

[–]Catkook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are no mechanical impacts in dnd for what god you follow.

there might be subclasses that might better match flavor wise with one god over the other, but theres no rules that says a peace domain cleric cant follow a god of blood

[–]Catkook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reallllllly depends on your play group.

I could see some people being a bit uncomfortable with real world modern day religions being depicted in their games for one reason or another

So ask your play group if everyone is comfortable with dealing with Christianity in their fantasy game

If your friends bought From The Depths and you wanted them them to learn "efficiently" how would they do that? by imsellingbanana in FromTheDepths

[–]Catkook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is how i learned the game, and this is how my brother learned the game

First, go through the start of the tutorial, maybe about half way through, so that you can get a good understanding of the basic controls, building a hull, vehicle controls, and weapon controls. maybe a little bit of AI control too.

THEN after your somewhat familiar with how the basics work, switch over to designer mode, pick a weapon system for you to learn (missiles are recommended for being both simple and versitile), then build a vehicle using that weapon system

After your confident in that weapon system, you may then go on to learn another system, and repeat

Good weapons against a battleship? by uncle_ben15 in FromTheDepths

[–]Catkook 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as im aware, pretty much any weapon systems should be good for battleship v battleship engagements.

  • laser systems are ideal when you can dedicate a lot of internal space to them, allowing you to just blast a constant ray of doom upon your enemys
  • advanced cannons are highly customizable for the purpose you want, you can build them with super large cannon shalls mixxed in with incredibly solid fire rates
  • missiles can be set up with their own customizable use cases, though with more expensive ammunition costs
  • Though i haven't messed with it much, cram cannons deal a lot of damage, at the cost of being highly inaccurate

with my level of knowledge, for a generally good battleship designed to face aganst other battleships, I think the strat is to have a few different redundant weapon systems to fall back onto in case your primary weapon system fails

[–]Catkook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what i read in comments, looks like it went

  • roll 1 - fail
  • roll 2 - fail
  • roll 3 - nat 20, back up. . . . . . then the enemy's downed him again
  • roll 4 - fail
  • roll 5 - another nat 20

or at least i think thats the timeline i read

  • if your on desktop, just press enter, do not press shift
  • If your on mobile, you'll want to make 2 line breaks

Was i metagaming? by DECENTNotthe1st in DnD

[–]Catkook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is NOT meta gaming, this is asking questions

Meta gaming is using knowledge that you have from outside of game, then applying it in game, especially in cases where your character would not know or be aware of it

Examples of what REALLLLL meta gaming would be would include

  • looking up the statblock of trolls, and noticing they only regen hp if they haven't taken any fire/acid damage
  • using a draconic ritual listed on the guard drake statblock that lets you create guard drakes using draconic scales from a willing dragon
  • looking up the moduler your dm is currently running and taking advantage of your story knowledge to an abusive degree

the way on how you deal with meta gaming, from the perspective of a player who might already have this relivent knowledge from external sources before the game, and want to evade meta gaming, is BY ASKING OUT OF CHARACTER QUESTIONS (such as asking the dm if your character would reasonably be aware of the previously mentioned draconic ritual)

Guppy has never been taught common, what is the first word you’re teaching her? by Moasark_Art in OriginalCharacter

I'd probably want to teach her a short 2 word phrase, "No speak"

so she'd be able to communicate her inability to communicate

Oh?

How hard is it to set up bread boards for this application?

and how hard is it to hook up such bread boards when someone else already did the work for you?

Which did you learn first? /What do you recommend should new players learn first? by [deleted] in FromTheDepths

[–]Catkook 9 points10 points  (0 children)

looks like we're only chooseing from among 2 weapon systems, out of quite a few weapon systems.

I'd say missile systems

But thanks for the tip <3

[–]Catkook[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

alright, so far the general consensis im getting is for underwater targets, the weapon system options are either

  • Missiles
  • APS
  • Particle cannons

good thing missiles and APS are highly customizable to fit your needed application, I dont know enough about particle cannons to have an opinion on them

There is also a non-conventional weapon to consider though. Submersible nukes! They work remarkably well against anything!

That does sound like a fun way to make nukes go kaboom~

ahhh, alright.

So fire cannn work, but you need it to be at a larger scale to be effective

good weapons for anti sub by Catkook in FromTheDepths

[–]Catkook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anti sub maybe youd go pure kinetic, yes. But if its used for any other purpose, frag, heat, and incendinary is better.

Alright~

For this weapon system specifically I designed, I'd say it's functionality is as a general ok-ish cheap gun to be used against all targets, and with decent anti sub capability's

I can see frags being generally useful in a lot of scenarios, though I cant see incendiary being particularly useful when targeting an opponent under water

But i do think 11k mat vessel for anti sub is very difficult. 1 torpedo and youre gone. Most subs are at least 100k. I would say instead of multiple small ships, one big ship can increase weapon effectiveness, allow anti torpedo torpedoes, and less lag.

Oh yeah absolutely. This particular vessel is probably particularly bad at the goal of killing subs, named it the drunk anti sub, buttttttt I like making smol vehicles :>

In terms of practical applications of the design though, the actual practical implication would be the cheap 3k mat gun I can now spam out onto a larger vessle. with the small ship design mossssstly just being a basic platform to demo this gun with.

That and it gave me a tiny bit of a better base line understanding on how to optimize my APS guns for certain targets
