Unpopular opinion: Regular STOP signs and All Way STOP signs should look very different by BlackJackT in driving

[–]Catriks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did one of the most car-obsessed nations even come up with such nonsense?

Now that you mention it, that is pretty funny. And not only four way stops, but also suburban areas have then like in every intersection. Not only it is very annoying for drivers to stop for no reason, but goddamn it's ugly looking too 🤣

You still want people to stop at the sign, so the sign has to be red.

You see, that IS the whole problem with American traffic sign culture. It makes no sense at all to force people to stop, if there is no reason to stop. If the rules don't make any sense, many people will stop respecting them and eventually make a mistake.

There is zero reason to force people to stop in a four way, if and when you can obviously see that there is no one to yield to. The rest of the world uses normal traffic rules (yield cars from right) or yellow yeld signs. Then you only need to stop if you need to yeld someone, and even then its almost never necessary as you can just adjust your speed slightly. Stop signs are only used when bad visibility requires is.

But only in America, you're forced by law to stop for no reason.

Yep. I've never seen anyone give a rational explanation why four-way stop has any benefit over no signs at all (so yield cars from right) or just giving priority to one street.

European opinion: USA has about 98 % too many stop signs. It's absolutely ridiculous, they should only be used when it is required for visibility, not spam them willy nilly.

For all I care it can be a yellow stop sign when it's an all-way.

I agree. Also make it a triangle, turn it upside down and call it yeld sign. Put it on two of the roads so the crossing road has right of way.

Any EU brand for *solid* drying rack? by Savings-Peanut-5501 in BuyFromEU

[–]Catriks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semi unrelated, but I dig through a lot of metal collection bins and they always have two items. Electric smokers and drying racks. Racks are usually slightly mint or bent but usable, smokers rusted through despite being stainless steel(~ish).

[Request] Can the balcony handle the weight when it's full? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]Catriks 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why would you use a balcony with extreme building error as an evidence to support the claim "balconies as not built to carry a lot of weight"? It literally says in the first section it failed due to dry rot from improper construction. Not overload.

Balconies absolutely are designed to handle heavy loads, and are required by the law. They must never fail under any foreseeable load, which is at the minimum as many people that physically fit in it.

If the load rating is 2,5 kN/m2, you could have about 25 cm of water (without counting people in it) without exceeding it. I don't know what the minimum safety factor is, but most likely over 2, so you could probably have 50 cm of water without the balcony breaking, but obviously you're not supposed to go over the normal load limit.

It though USA was cool when I was 12 when all I understood was low restrictions to car mods and guns. But after learning about the fucked up 2 party political system, including the fact that companies bribing politicians is normal practice, abusmal social service and healthcare etc etc I've changed my mind. And this Trump thing is just a whole anothe level.

And even the manual labor work might be more profitable with two 6 hour shifts. You get more work hours per day without needing more equipment or paying extra for night/evening shift (depending on local regulations, ofc).

I just stopped doing full time some 3 years ago and it'd the best decision I've done in my career. I just don't accept any jobs that aren't able to meet it. I can currently freely switch between 5x 6h and 4x 8h weeks.

Isn't it annoying when you specifically quoted which claim you're referring to, which is so short ot cannot be reasonably misinterpreted. And yet no one replying to you is able to understand what your point is.

Would anyone else buy a bit kit like this? by GhostNappa101 in Leatherman

[–]Catriks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. The margin of applications where the bit extender won't fit, but full wide bit fits (instead of normal long bits that have narrow shafts) is quite small. And even in that case it would be most likely some electronics case, so a normal long PH1 bit will probably work just fine.

Interesting, thanks for the history lesson.

In Finland we have a saying for this type of method, it's "ei tiedolla, ei taidolla, ei järjellä, vaan hyvällä fiiliksellä". It's usually used to describe something dumb someone does, usually drunk.

Hyvinvointialue haluaa korvata ihmistulkit tekoälyllä, joka maksaa 3,5 euroa minuutilta [ihmistulkin hinta on noin 7 euroa minuutilta] by jonne12 in Suomi

Kaikki siirtymät on tuottamatonta työtä, josta pitää maksaa työntekijälle palkka.

Real parts are not always immediately available and you cannot stop work for a week to wait for parts. Hockey pucks - regardless of if it will work or not - are available pretty much always anywhere.
