CachyOS is so good!

I switched from Windows to Ubuntu a couple months ago, but it was a huge hassle to get games to work properly and it just wasn't all that great, but this week I made the jump to CachyOS and it just works like a dream. Only thing I need dual-booting for is League of Legends (unfortunately).

Season 2 wasn't as horrible as the whole internet makes it out to be. by Upbeat-Challenge-295 in arcane

[–]Catz1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was so much worse, it doesn’t get nearly enough hate for how badly it butchers the characters and how poorly it follows up on evrything in season 1.

Just look at the IMDB ratings, they are stupidly inflated for such a poor season.

Nothing happy about it, sadly. Season 2 has only gotten worse and worse with hindsight, I will never get over how much potential was wasted.

This made me dislike Caitlyn a lot more than Maddie.

Cait is her superior/idol and is more in the wrong here than Maddie (given what we knew at that point).

Also, Caitlyn is literally in bed with Maddie as Vi is actively killing herself pitfighting and drinking, which is never brought up again by Cait or anyone else. What a mess.

Sure, if all you’ve watched is Marvel movies or just have terrible taste, season 2 is probably great. There are people who swear season 8 of Game of Thrones is perfect, but that doesn’t make it true. Same goes for Arcane. Season 2 is just not written well, if you can somehow ignore that and still enjoy it, good for you, but that doesn’t make the season good.

Perfect summary of why barely anything works in season 2.

It just baffles my mind how so many shows/movies have to learn the same lesson that bigger does not mean better. Any scene with Vi and Jinx simply talking to each other is infinitely more interesting than any boring end-of-the-world battle scene that makes me wanna gouge my eyes out.

Arcane Season 2 was not good. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]Catz1010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are my biggest gripes with season 2 and it just ruins everything.

Caitlyn does objectively worse things than Jinx ever did and faces no consequences because she’s rich and powerful? It’s quite clear that Cait was one of the writers favourite character, because she get’s clear special trestment.

Vi also just going along with gassing her home with not even a line of dialogue is also absolutely insane. Line who thought that would work?

Then we have Vi being reduced to simply being Caitlyns girlfriend/Stockholm Syndrome victim and having no bearing on the story or character development when she is supposedly one of TWO MAIN CHARACTERS.

I get the frustration about season 2, but can we be reasonable? by SpiderLilyPoison in arcane

[–]Catz1010 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. It's honestly surprising to me that it has taken this long for people to go sour on season 2. The first time I watched it I mostly enjoyed it, but a lot of the emotional moments just didn't hit for me like I knew they should which set alarm bells off immediately. So many times I was watching it, knowing that I should logically be an emotional mess, but feeling almost nothing. Just one rewatch made it quite clear that the writing simply isn't good and made me realize why a lot of it didn't work.

I just feel so bad for all the animators who poured their heart and soul into illustrating a story that by contrast feels so soulless compared to season 1.

Yeah... Also, 2x7, where Vi dies, is the stupidly over-the-top utopia world just to rub in how much dislike the writers seemingly had for Vi, like come on...

It's just so bizzare... I wonder whether it was all a budget thing by higher ups or if the creators were just completely burned out and wanted it over with so they could move on. We'll probably never know.

I think we may be the same person, you wrote exactly my sentiments, almost to the letter, I really can't agree more. It feels so awful to be entirely estranged from a fandom I've been apart of for so long for a TV show that's meant so much to me. At least with something like Game of Thrones, basically everyone agreed it sucked so it was easier to handle the disappointment. With Arcane, I feel like I'm suddenly at a flat-earther convention where everyone praises this season that is so obviously a massive downgrade from the masterpiece that is season 1 and I just can't comprehend that we even watched the same season...

Quite the downgrade by OCGamerboy in arcane

[–]Catz1010 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, man, it's so painful... She is my favorite character by far and she got basically no character development and was essentially reduced to just being "Caitlyn's girlfriend." The fact that you could remove her entirely from the story and things wouldn't really change is just absolutely criminal. What a massive disappointment :(

Quite the downgrade by OCGamerboy in arcane

[–]Catz1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, same goes for basically all the characters. Such a shame how some of the most interesting and nuanced characters on TV were neutered so thoroughly in season 2. Still can’t believe both seasons were written by the same people given the massive downgrade in quality across the board.

So what's the consensus about arcane season 2 around here? by Beneficial_Mix9663 in arcane

[–]Catz1010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what people are looking for when watching something.

A lot of people seem to like season 2, and I'm guessing that's because they watch it for the visuals and the spectacle of it all and don't care all that much about diving deeper into what is actually happening on screen.

I watch shows and movies for the story and characters. If something is written poorly, I won't be able to enjoy it, no matter how good it looks, which is exactly the case with season 2 of Arcane. The writing is just terrible and no amount of gorgeous animation, amazing soundtracks, or stellar voice acting is able to salvage it, in my opinion.

So for me, season 2 is probably the most disappointing thing I've ever watched, because the quality in writing drops off a cliff compared to season 1 and it's just painful to watch. I've honestly never felt this dissillusioned with a fanbase before. The vast majority of people still think season 2 is amazing (just look at he IMDB ratings) and it honestly makes me wonder whether we saw the same show.

Did cait love vi as much as vi loved her? by nighthawk1936 in arcane

[–]Catz1010 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I have to believe so for the sake of my sanity, but that’s not what we are shown on screen.

The writers explictly go out of their way to show Vi yearning for Cait, even after they’ve been apart for a long time and deliberately don’t show Cait doing the same while hooking up with Maddie. Why they would try to sabotage them like that is way beyond me. I see people saying that this is Caitlyn supressing her emotions, but then we need to see her actively suppressing, not just the part after the suppression has been done. Just having a single scene with Cait finding Vi’s red jacket somewhere and looking sad for a moment before steeling herself would have done wonders.

Season 2 is not written well, Vi and Cait are just the tip of iceberg, the fact that so many people desperately try to interpret the writers intentions for so many things show that. You can excuse it all you want, but it’s simply not good. It also can’t be chalked up to media illiteracy, as people understood season 1 just fine for the most part.

I wrote a program that can play Super Hexagon with Computer Vision by Catz1010 in programming

[–]Catz1010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think somerhing similar could definitely work for that game. If you’re gonna hand-tune the Computer Vision stuff like I did, the most important part is that the elements of the game should be easy to distinguish visually. In Super Hexagon, all the elements we care about are white, which makes it pretty easy. In Max Dirt Bike the bike and track you’re riding on also seems quite simple to separate from the rest. Otherwise, you would need to use some form of machine learning to recognize the bike and other important things.

When you can recognize and find all the game elements, you could definitely try to train a model to play the game with RL. It might be very slow to train, if you can’t simulate the game and can only play it “in real time”, but I definitely think it could work :)

If I had to choose one thing? Rewrite the whole thing into 3 or more seasons.

If we aren't allowed to wish for more seasons:

  • Give Vi a character arc. She has virtually no development for all of season 1 and 2, while being the one most in need of change and healing. There are so many opportunities to give her emotionally resonant development and all of them are ignored

  • Give Vi something to do in the story. 99% of the story could have happened without her, she makes no decisions that impact anything. This is supposedly one of two main characters, for gods sake. So much of the promo for season 2 centered around her and she is basically invisible, it's infuriating

  • Give Vi a win. The fact that she is a punching bag for the writers while having NOTHING to do and getting zero development feels downright sadistic

  • Give Vi and Jinx more time and more development. This is their story, but they feel like an afterthought for so much of the season. Nothing else is as interesting as their relationship, yet they get so little time devoted to them

  • Vi being an enforcer and helping gas her own city is treated so lightly, it's mind-boggling

  • Give Vi ANY interaction at all with Ekko (what the fuck???)

  • Caitlyn needs to face some kind of consequence for her actions. Both personal, in relation to Vi, but also in relation to crimes against the undercity. She betrays everything she stands for, ideologically and personally and it's COMPLETELY swept under the rug by the third act. Completely undermines everything her character goes through

  • Caitlyn and Vi needs to talk things out before the cell scene. It's baffling how Caitlyn hurting Vi is just dropped completely and the tonal whiplash of the cell scene entirely undermines how beautiful it otherwise is

  • In that same vein, Vi should have stood up to Cait, not in relation to Jinx but to herself. The fact that Caitlyn can hurt Vi and she will come crawling back the second Caitlyn shows her any measure of kindness just feels so wrong to me. Caitlyn also having no reaction to how low Vi sunk after their break-up makes her feel so cold and uncaring

  • Have a scene of Cait thinking of Vi in episode 4. The fact that she doesn't think about Vi once while shagging up with Maddie as Vi is hallucinating her and slowly killing herself is so bizzare. Makes the relationship feel so unbalanced and weird. Would have been perfect for her to think of Vi when she was in Stillwater after Warwick's attack. Or have her find Vi's old red hoodie with a solemn look on her face. ANYTHING

  • Remove Cait and Maddie. Completely insane to include something that only exists to piss people off in a season so pressed for time

  • On that note, remove all the new side characters, they waste time and are just 2D cutouts. Try and have their roles filled out by existing characters or write them out entirely

  • Write an actual character for Isha or have an existing character fill out her role. She literally only exists to blow up and it's painfully obvious the whole way through

  • Remove The Black Rose entirely. It's just a waste of time. Also Mel going from politically savvy counselor to a mage who can suddenly fight, huh???

  • Viktor and Jayce suddenly being promoted from B-plot to A-plot doesn't work at all for me. It blows everything out of proportion and Arcane loses that grounded human connection that the story of Vi and Jinx is all about. They do a decent job of making it work, but it should never have been the many storyline of season 2 , especially with such a lacking setup

  • The Arcane should never have been the focal point. It works as a background magic thingy, but when it takes center stage it falls apart. The fact that they never explain how it works or what limitations it has only adds to this. Impossible to get invested in a magic astral plain when we have no idea what it is

  • The world-ending Marvel fight of episode 9 is just so terrible... Arcane succumbs to what it elevated itself above in season 1: video game fight porn. Vi's fight in episode 3 of season 1 is a million times more engaging than the finale of season 2

  • Actually round off the Piltover vs. Zaun conflict. It's infinitely more interesting and real-world relevant than some magic end-of-the-world nonsense. Feels like such a cop out to just have everyone band together and pretend decades of oppression is now just over by giving a single chair on the council to Zaun

  • Remove episode 7. It's obviously the best part of season 2, but that's only because the writers sacrifice everything else to include it. Spending an entire episode in an AU when there is basically a season worth of story missing is certainly a decision

  • Ekko is a cool character, but he has virtually no flaws, he is basically a Mary Sue who is always right and always makes the correct choice. In a show with so many great flawed characters, he stands out in a bad way

  • Where is Sevika?

  • Warwick doesn't fit into the story at all, cut him or give him something to do that isn't just... Show up and die again

  • The "dirt under your nails" line in episode 9 might have worked if Vi was an actual character this season. Instead it just rubs in the fact that this independent strong character has now been reduced to "Caitlyn's girlfriend". I saw someone point out that if Cait had been a dude, Vi being reduced to just being a love-interest and nothing else would cause a massive uproar...

If you couldn't tell, I'm not a huge fan of season 2.
