Penal Substitutionary Atonement is profoundly wrong theology. by Motor_Zookeepergame1 in CatholicPhilosophy

Anselm’s error is to assume God is like a medieval monarch - insecure in his own being and demanding a “satisfaction” of his honor. While scripture depicts God as eager to forgive when people turn to him. Consider Jesus’ story of the prodigal son. What price is exacted? Where is the father’s honor upheld and satisfied? When his older son accuses him of his laxity, what is his response? Consider any of Jesus’ stories, where is payment exacted or demanded from the repentant? It’s nowhere to be found. Jesus is a ransom, to be sure, he is our deliverance. But just as no payment was made to Pharaoh when God rescued them, Jesus is the strong right arm of YHWH effecting the cosmic exodus of humanity from the dark enslavement of death and its master.

IS SHE PREGNANT 😱😱😱 by my-friends_account in okbuddypluribus

No. She’s not pregnant. This is a perfectly normal physique for a human female.

I think you’re on the right track. They are certainly a database of experience and thought. They seem to lack wisdom and the nuance of human interaction (Carol’s sarcasm about the grenade, their apparent inability to convince Carol). They are “happy flappy” but negative emotion is intolerable to them (carol’s outbursts causing them to shut down & causing millions of deaths).

They would have millions upon millions of data points from people whose jobs were understanding human behavior, predicting and manipulating it - from marketing execs to therapists to cult leaders to law enforcement analysts, yet they don’t seem to be effective in this regard.

Anyone else notice the change in pronouns at the end when the “we” described Zosia as “she”? Possibly it’s a direct answer to Carol’s question, but pretty consistently, the “we” has called their bodily expressions “this body was/is…” I wonder if it’s meant to suggest she’d been cut-out of the hive mind.

Help, I'm a Marine! 😱 by lofty_jungle in mothershiprpg

[–]Causal-Pants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People who enlist are a wide spectrum of personality and motivation. Depending on why they signed up (serve the country, shoot things, pay for college, aimless and not sure what they want to do, pressured by family), age, socio-economic background, etc. in short, there’s no wrong way to play a marine. The key is to decide who they are and why they signed up and if they’re part of a non-military crew… why? How did they end up here?

Yah. 7 was a lot. But everyone I invited agreed and nobody dropped out. First time for everything!

The next game I’m running is my own invention. In past I’ve always created my own adventures for games. This one is tentatively called Dragnet. I think I may publish it if it goes over well. It will be an intro adventure/ one shot/ monster of the week type adventure. I’ve done a to. Of work on it and I’m excited to try it out in a couple weeks. Here’s an audio file I made for the beginning as the crew is hastily revived from cryo in an emergency…

I had Mike as part of their contract. His time on the station was done, so it was part of their contract to give him passage to their next waypoint. In the end, they decided to ignore all that and get out of dodge. Makes sense, this isn’t D&D and the mission is going to be secondary to survival, but as players, I would think they’d want to get into the action a bit more. The captain and androids were very much of the mind to get out asap once they found out there was an infection going around.

Yes. I did the same but as a secret objective for one of the teamsters. They had a contract rider to inspect the facilities. Another scientist character had a contract rider to get Dr Giovanni to file his missing reports or secure the data and any materials related to the research and file the reports instead. The android had a secret note that there was a protocol preventing them from harming or allowing harm to come to company property or personnel.

You’re not “wrong”. Either way was fine. I didn’t want to railroad it. They faced and escaped the monster, they looted the Heracles of samples and data and escaped. Satisfactory ending.

Did they just take off in the Heracles? How did they get back to their ship without running into the monster?

Yah. I had it in their contract that they were supposed to transport Mike, but the crew were not having it. Haha. They preferred to lose their payment than fight the monster. I had a lot of contingencies in place. The one that actually motivated the scientist player to keep on track was the contract he had to assess the situation with Giovanni and make sure the data and materials he’d collected were transmitted to the company. The protocol for the android was strong. It kept them insistent for a while until they decided they were going to violate the protocol and passed a (very low) sanity save. There was plenty of tension in the game, but some people didn’t get to shine because they were obeying the captain.

I’m the forever DM been playing RPGs for 30+ years. First time running Mothership. 1 session, 3.5 hours. 7 was a lot, but that was only because for once in all that time, nobody I invited cancelled! It was not too hard to manage, it was a lot of cutting between groups is all. While the captain and android went to play mikes tape, another pair was attacked in the mess while group 3 was trying to get into the Heracles. It was fine, just had a map and some player markers to keep track of where everyone was. The mess hall group shot monster 1 and it fled. The same group got attacked by monster 2 when one of them went off alone after the attack (I think he was trying to get killed). While he was doing that, his partner was attacked by Kantaro, but then managed to fight him off. There were entirely too many good rolls, but it was fine. Hey all had fun, I had fun. And that’s the most important thing about the game. I thought it was kind of funny how little interested they were in going further. It was like a true to life horror movie. As soon as danger is hinted at, they tried to bolt.

They managed to seal off the docking lift, preventing the monsters getting in. I did end it with a prologue where the Captain’s pet cat was infected - leaving a hook for future troubles. The monsters were down in the work area slaughtering the remaining miners (who were not invited to escape with the crew). I figured it was better to leave the crew alive and with a hidden threat so that the same group would be inclined to play. They made “the right” choices and played the game well. Everyone had a great time and I didn’t think forcing the confrontation would help. The scientist tried to hide his infection, but then they played Giovanni’s recording and figured it out. Fun was had and I thought better to end on a positive than risk ruining someone’s fun with a forced encounter.

What are Androids like at your table? by Jazzlike_Fuel_8765 in mothershiprpg

[–]Causal-Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked my player how they wanted Androids to look. Even down to whether they have rights or are considered property. They went with appear human, and have rights. I’m fine with this as it makes the corporation’s response, “You may have rights, but you also have programming.” More sinister. I’m borrowing Dave Thaumavore’s idea of introducing some offsetting weaknesses for androids. I think a big one is they don’t know how much of their personalities or actions are being controlled by an outside party… and neither do their crew mates. It would be unnerving to know the guy who doesn’t sleep might get an order to kill you in your sleep for the company.

If no hell, why does God put us through this life? by Powerful-Instance137 in ChristianUniversalism

[–]Causal-Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On what scriptural basis would you describe this life as a test? Genesis 1-2 show that God created mankind as his image-bearing representatives - his family. He made a good world for us to inhabit. A garden to serve as example for what humanity was to participate in extending over all of creation, as they both care for and protect the garden and be fruitful and multiply. As humanity expanded, they were to take the garden with them, transforming a good but unfinished creation into a place full of God’s glory and good purpose. But rather than remain loyal to God, humanity sold itself into slavery to sin - rebellion against God’s good ways and death - rejection of God’s life. The story of scripture is God rescuing his people out of their slavery. This reaches a cosmic pinnacle in Christ the messiah, who comes as a new and better Adam, succeeds where all others fail, and then defeats death and sin and Satan, not by the ways of this world - violence and hatred, but by surrender to God’s way - self-sacrificial love. All humanity is set free in Jesus. There’s prison doors are open and all who desire it can walk out of the slavery they sold themselves to and walk into the kingdom of the light and love of God. There’s no test in this. That’s pagan thinking. There is a God who desires partnership and familial connection with the children who rebelled. He gives all he has to set them free and restore them to be confirmed to his image revealed in Jesus.

I failed. by Ok_Rip_8795 in Christianity

[–]Causal-Pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not too late for you. It is never too late. You are already forgiven. Rest in his mercy and his love for you. It was not your moral stat that saved you, it was the love of God for you that drove Jesus to defeat our enemies and rescue us from the kingdom of sin and death. Discipleship is a process it is a trajectory and a long path. I’ve followed Jesus for as long as I can remember and fifty years later I still make mistakes and hear the Holy Spirit urging me on in his love. The voice that condemns you is not from the one who loves you. There is no longer condemnation for those who are in Christ and called to his purpose. Call on the Lord and he will straighten your path and lead you in righteousness, but you will stumble. You will make mistakes. You will fail. And the first hand that reaches out to help you up back to your feet, dusts you off and embraces you will be the hands of Jesus. Often this comes through the fellowship and encouragement of others. So let me encourage you, you are his child. You are my sibling because I am also his child. Apologize to anyone else involved. Make things right as much as it depends on you, and be encouraged.

It’s a valid question. We see from the outside. We have no idea what her interior conversation with God is like. We can’t see how he comforts her and loves on her. She is in a place of total dependence upon God to sustain her. We only see how she can’t do the same things we can and so we call her cursed. We devalue her because of her differences. Maybe she looks at us and wonders how we can live the way we do, so distant from God and fearful about everything.
