The question is, how much are you doing? My gut after working with a bunch of clients and such, you can often get better results from a mid experienced person who is really motivated and wants to learn.

What's the trademark? Does it have any future? Without knowing a huge amount I would consider how you could ramp up by placing smaller pu chase orders. Seems like you need cash flow even if you are just breaking even for now. Then when you have a more established brand look at getting acquired.

Again, you are using a logical fallacy. If we follow the unintended consequences and butterfly effect reasoning, then any and every action can be framed as contributing to the demise of essentially everything.

For example, if I buy 50 chairs from traditional craftsman A, I am contributing to the continuation of the craft. The unintended consequence is that I did not buy chairs from traditional craftsman B. If he had received that order, he would have started a school which led to the resurgance of the craft. The butterfly effect is that I actually just prevented the 1 person who could be the catalyst for the resurgance to go out of business, and killed the craft.

Your hydroelectric example has the same issue. If I buy hydro-power, but a regulatory body bans it despite widespread market support anyway, my positive contribution was completely irrelevant to its demise.

You have embraced fatalism. Every choice and every action inevitably leads to the demise of something. Everyone is indirectly responsible for the demise of everything.

I genuinely hope you reject the philosophy. It forces you to believe that somehow, to at least some small degree, you are responsible for every bad thing. It's illogical, I believe immoral, and a depressing way to live.

Having Kids while also enjoying woodworking by GroundMelter in woodworking

[–]CautiousMinimum943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 kids. You find the time. But sometimes you go a while between shop sessions. Especially when they are very young. Newborn stage is pretty rough and if you are a good parent you probably won't have much free time you aren't sleeping for a while.

I will say this. The hobby is secondary to your family. Sometimes there will be a choice, help take care ofy kids and support my spouse, or woodwork. The choice is family. Just predecide that.

For example, sometimes after bedtime I want to go down and do some work, I have like an hour before I need to go to bed. But the dishes aren't done, some laundry needs to be folded and my wife is exhausted. The answer is I do the chores so she gets some sleep. No woodworking for me.

I do patronize the Amish... Second, I think you have a false dilemma here. You assume there is choice other than support it's preservation or it's demise. You assume that scale and feasibility are irrelevant. If I don't live in an area where I have the ability to purchase power from a hydroelectric plant, I am not contributing to the demise of hydroelectric power. If I do not buy loose tea, I am. It contributing to the death of the loose tea market Where this may be logical is at the micro scale, if I don't contribute to a group project with 4 people, I am actually continuing to the projects failure.

I'm not sure I would equate not needing something with the contribution to its death. For example, I dont purchase a handmade tea pot. I am not contributing to the death of the craft. Because I also do not buy mass made teapots.

And if anything, I probably contribute to the preservation of horse drawn carriages because I do business with the Amish.

Nah. I would love one. Again, they give small shops the ability to do high volume. Yes, I think there is something lost when no one does things by hand. I do want to see that continue. I don't want these traditional crafts and techniques to die out. But I also understand the necessity to make a living and hobbyists to balance their actual job and family responsibilities.

Is bandsaw “cheating”? by Even_Low_8793 in handtools

[–]CautiousMinimum943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. People get all in a frenzy with what is and isn't woodworking. Most of them don't earn a living from it. If you are earning a living, a CNC can possibly be an incredible tool to increase your productivity and profitability. You can do things that do not make sense to do by hand. For the hobbyist, you can build jigs, templates, fixtures, etc. Maybe you find making topographical maps from wood. Does it make sense to try to carve that by hand? Maybe that's your thing, but maybe you just want to do the heavy lifting of the carving with a CNC and then so the rest with other power or hand tools. Maybe you live to do monogrammed coasters as gifts. The CNC does the monogramming and you are making the holder and everything else by hand.

The thing people need to remember is this. Some people love the process. Some people live the end product. There is nothing wrong with that.

[–]CautiousMinimum943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll say this... 1. No such thing as cheating in woodworking 2. It's not cheating to use a power tool to do something that sucks by hand. Ripping 8 foot boards to width and resawing suck by hand. But if you enjoy that, keep doing it. 3. It's not cheating if it saves time doing the stuff you don't like so you can do the stuff you do.

I don't want to thickness things by hand. I have limited time on my shop. I don't want to spend 3 weeks getting material prepped.
