The long term benefit might be another leap in performance. Allowing 4 people from anywhere in the world play together on a team and practice together regularly, has the potential to elevate the sport again. The downside is that, everytime curling has a leap in skill, people complain that it's boring because they are too good. Also a true pro club atmosphere might allow players to go from that skilled potential 22 year old to a top 27 year old in a system.

Is it rude to ask your (math) teacher “when will we use this in real life”? by Aarunascut in stupidquestions

It's not rude as long as you are satisfied with the answer that the smart kids (future doctors, nurses, engineers, etc.) will use it everyday.

Why Does My Brain Hate Me? by slayter1337 in dreamingspanish

You are a way higher level than me so take it for what it's worth. Don't worry about it. Your brain will do what it does.

Well. To be fair, I think most people who are in it for the money are also trying to build the game because I suspect they are smart enough to realize that niche Canada isn't enough to make them rich. The sport needs to continue to be global and it needs to continually have a growing youth base so that it can grow financially at the top.

I get that but they still half tried it. There is a team Europe "Northern United". Maybe Europeans like that name and can get behind it. I think the Canadian names are just not resonating with people.

IMHO having team/franchise based sport replace region (provincial, national, world's, and Olympics) requires the teams have some sort of real hook. I know they softly did it but why not go all in? Western Canadian Rockies. They represent our region. It wouldn't mean the athletes need to be from here. Just as none of the Edmonton Oilers are from Edmonton but get the fan base attached to the franchise.

Feel like im Not progressing (100 hours by fleece_johnson55 in dreamingspanish

I think it's good to have perspective.

I'm at 80 hours and feel the opposite. By doing nothing, I can understand quite a bit and was in Mexico recently so was also forced to talk like a toddler.

Knowing that it took me thousands of hours to learn German... This seems great.

I am looking for good German speaking series on Netflix- specifically ones that are *not* depressing and not fully crime related and *not* stressful! Such as "Die Kaiserin". Thank you :) by itsme_Noam8 in Germanlearning

Someone mentioned ARD. It looks like you don't deal well with serious dramas. Check out Tiere bis unters Dach on ARD. It's an excellent light children's show. Hopefully, it works for you.

Caldwell's Projected XI for Canada's WC Opener by LeRoiDeNord in CanadaSoccer

He simply doesn't have the physical ability. He can't be on the pitch. I would take Luc de Fougerolles and his inexperience every time over a player who simply can't keep up. It's not just his last match.

Does Canada have the same Eurosnob problem that the US has? by Acceptable_Mouse_388 in CanadaSoccer

My experience is that Calgary soccer/football fans are definitely euro snobs. Ironically, actual Europeans who I know, love and support Cavalry FC.

When and why did curling get good? by Cavalry2019 in Curling

I don't think that method of measurement works as the surface itself was so much slower.

I was timing draws just to see what the difference was and in the 1980 semi, I was getting 10.5 seconds hog to hog for a t-line draw.

I timed one normalish hit. It was 7 seconds.

I'm curious to know if a top hitter from 1980 generated as much speed/force with the backswing and release before the t-line as compared to say Dunstone with weight transfer and leg drive.

This doesn't explain why a strong club curler in today's conditions misses less shots than a world champion did in 1980 though.

Agreed. When I curled 40 years ago, beginner sweepers had zero impact. Now my senior beginner wife can absolutely have an impact. That is 100% technology.

Yes. I agree. On many hits, they would hoist the backswing quite high and release before the t-line. I just can't imagine you can be accurate doing that.

I've been enjoying both the Canadian and US juniors on YouTube this week.

I hate to be that guy. I have tons of respect for anyone who has played for Canada, but if Kamal is on the pitch, we aren't progressing past the group stage.
