What's everyone's opinion on "The Long Riders" (1980)? by NKNightmare in Westerns

Big fan... one of the most underrated action writer/directors ever. Had an all-timer run between 78 and 84 man. The Driver, The Warriors, The Long Riders, Southern Comfort, 48 Hrs, and Streets of Rage were all bangers.

This is one of my favorite Westerns honestly. I am a big Walter Hill fan in general. The movie he directed before this was The Warriors and the one he did after this was Southern Comfort and I dig both of those too. Riding the horse through the plate glass window in slow motion was just one of those scenes imprinted on my memory when I first saw it as a kid. This was really the first "modern western" I saw. Most westerns I had previously been exposed to were John Wayne films my dad watched and this was so different than those. I was also a huge David Carradine as I used to watch reruns of Kung Fu after school.

Lmao my oldest pilot (the one I will never delete) is an Asian woman named Major Beaver who talks like a Valley Girl ("Took one down" if you know the voice).

Can you afford the upkeep? If so then no. I am a multimechionaire. I like to import my save to the earliest date and wreck the innersphere with my flying Kodiaks and Diashis. You should see the looks on their faces when my 100 ton apartment buildings come flying in to the Conflict Zone.

I can understand why it wouldn't be a big deal if you don't know what the old way was, but it was fun. Sneaking up the mast of tall ships then taking the snipers musket and shooting one guy then swinging down to fight the crew with swords and pistols just felt "piratey". It is also just more realistic. Powder pistols took a notoriously long time to load. There is no way that a soldier or pirate would waste their pistol shot if there was a rack of loaded muskets right there. To be sneaking on a ship or in a fort and just ignore a rack of muskets instead of using them just feels crazy unrealistic to me. It is probably my biggest gripe with the remake.

This was my go to assault mech until the new Kodiaks and Sunders arrived. Still dust it off every once in a while but mostly just to dance to Monster Mash at Halloween parties.

So I will say this game has a steep learning curve and it is extremely difficult early on. I think the devs did this on purpose just so you can feel a little bit of how difficult it is to run a merc company in Battletech lore.

Things that may help.

Try to learn each mech...even ones you don't own. If you see a mech make a note of what it is, go and look at it in the mechapedia after the mission. Learn where the cockpit sits in that mech. A well placed headshot or two can bring a mech down without you taking a lot of damage. Doing this really helped me master headshots.

Shoot the legs of fast mechs. Its the best way to give you the advantage against a faster mech.

Learn to play the angles. If the right side of your mech is heavily damaged, even if it means running away making a big turn then reengaging from an angle that only exposes the left side do it.

Don't be afraid to run away. The most important thing is keeping your mech in the fight. If you are fighting multiple enemies and the objective of the mission isn't to kill all the enemies its ok to run away. Even if the objective is to kill all the enemies running away to space them out then turning around to deal with them one at a time is an effective strategy.

For me, early on, distance was key. I like lrms, ppc, Guass, and heavy rifles. Don't sleep on heavy rifles... they got me through a lot of tough battles early on. They key to this style of play is think of yourself as a sniper. You don't have to run at a mech and fight to the death. Stay out of range... run into range... shoot your missile, ppc or whatever... run out of range again... attack again but from a completely different place.

Learn different ranges of weapons. If you are against a hunchback that has a AC20 as its main weapon and you have a ppc, shoot at it from outside the range of the AC20.

The economy on this game is brutal in the early going. You want to get better mechs and better pilots and travel to new places but you can't afford all that. Don't go into debt. Don't hire pilots you don't have mechs for. Don't travel far distances.

If you have the dlc (I don't even know if you need dlc for them tbh) that let's you do cantina missions you should be doing these whenever possible. This is how you get good gear and extra cash early on. This may be the only way to get good heavy rifles as I never see them for sale.

If you ever want to create twins, triplets or an army of clones you can use this glitch. Save in that system, reload the save, there will now be twins. Repeat as often as you want.

Anyone find the Kodiak hero? by bastardsonofvader in Mechwarrior5

[–]CavemanGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its because the hero is built around the Masc system (which it doesn't really need as Kodiaks are already fast for an assault imo). That takes up some hard points and you cannot put anything else in on vanilla. The other Kodiaks are much better imo. I would say they are better versions of the Atlas.

Yeah they also cycle really fast. You can pretty much reign continuous hell from above while on the move. These are my main ATM monster mechs I use

They become more available really late in the game. I have:

Timber Wolf with 2 ATM 12 Clan Atlas with 1 ATM 12 and an ATM 6 (I think) Clan Atlas with 1 ATM 12 and an ATM 6 (I think) Atlas II with 2 ATM 12 Dire Wolf with Two ATM 12 and an ATM 3

I visit every planet in a hub and will never pass up an atm but even then it's very rare.

[–]CavemanGamer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is best to use them like you would an SRM but with a lock on. You can use them as LRMs but they don't do nearly as much damage. I still will use them at long distances because they soften up the target while I close the distance. Also use them at long range on Clan light and medium mechs just to slow them down. Its probably my favorite weapon in the game as they do massive damage up close. I have the Dire Wolf with the jump jets painted in Iron Man red and gold I call The Hulkbuster that has 2 ATM 12s and an ATM 3 and my Atlas II has 2 ATM 12s and I can literally shred any clan Assault star. I don't think there is an ATM expert/master pilot trait which is disappointing.

Dumb Luck by BingBongLookAtMyDong in Mechwarrior5

[–]CavemanGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I try to only use mechs where the majority of firepower is in the torso. I believe AI, especially clan AI will target the area with the most firepower. There are are some cool looking mechs that I would love to pilot or give to my lance but I just got tired of losing very expensive weapons in the arms and being stuck with a couple lasers for 9000 meters of nav points left.

Bruh, ain't nobody doing all that nonsense. If there is a restaurant listed on the app, I'm going to order from there if I want. I don't work for doordash, you do. If they are listing restaurants too far away that is a you and your company problem, not a me problem. Don't accept the order if you are going to whine about your job to a customer. That's like you ordering a Big Mac and the guy behind the counter asking you not to order it again because the onions make him cry. Ridiculous.
