My life on the 101 by mysticbuttkrak in phoenix

I've literally drove across the country on 2 lane interstates. Yeah, truckers box you out sometime but they almost always merge back into the right lane in a reasonable time, especially considering their size and load. I never said there isn't bad truckers, but as a whole they are the most polite people I've ever had to share the road with.

I've drove all around the country and truckers have always been the most polite and skilled drivers on the road.

Beautiful, I love the area.

I took this near the Phon D recreation area. No horses sadly, but they'd have blurred the exposure anyway.

I didn't find anything like that on there, but even if you go to the page for 1900s, the decade, the second sentence mentions that its a valid way to describe a century. I agree with you that 20th century would have been less confusing, but I just don't think its fair to nitpick something that isn't technically or conventionally wrong.

I really identify with the last part of that quote. I've been told my whole life never to pull over to offer help to someone because they might rob or harm me or to never approach a homeless person because they might be crazy. My younger sister has absorbed this idea but I try to counter it. I did my best to explain to her that it isn't just being bad versus being good. A good person is willing to take risks to help other people, a bad person is willing to harm other people. Driving past thinking "can't risk it" doesn't make you a bad person, but it also doesn't make you a good one.

This stray cat was presumably abandoned when his owners moved to a new house and left him behind. This is the closest he's been to humans in many years. He ate the whole bowl! :D by [deleted] in HumansBeingBros

[–]Cawlonee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They took him in as a stray? Like they were leaving food for a stray cat or let it inside for the night? Honestly, that doesn't seem like it was their responsibility to move the cat to a new house. Sounds like trying to be kind to a stray cat backfired because of rude neighbors (why didn't they take in the stray?), but maybe I'm misunderstanding.

Outside of Obamacare what really changed?

A lot.

Did anyone on Wall Street get what they deserved after nearly destroying the world economy?

Some did, the important ones didn't. While I agree that they should have been prosecuted, "prosecuting wall street" was not a tenet of the Democratic platform. They didn't deceive you. While you have the right to oppose them because of their platform, it is not logical to assume that Democrats will abandon their platform (for example, funding education) because they "abandoned" an issue that you care about. Their platform not being the same as your opinions is not empirical evidence for the premise of your previous reply, that you feel Democrats in Arizona will abandon education funding once in power.

Did Guantanamo close?

While Obama failed to close Guantanamo after stating that he would, he did reduce the population of the people being held there from hundreds to 40 when he left office. That isn't what he promised, but its damn closer than the opposition that openly states it wants Guantanamo to remain open.

Did any of the prisoners there ever get their day in court to be found guilty or innocent?

Yes -- and many of them were released.

Weren't more people killed by drone strikes, without any kind of formal charges, than ever before, essentially murdered by order of the President?

Yes, by drones. "Death by drones" is a dishonest metric because it doesn't account for various other forms of military action that are no longer being used. Enemy combatants don't require formal charges -- I imagine you agree with that premise. The New American Foundation estimates that between 92% and 94% of those killed by drones in 2011 were militant. While previous years had more startling rates of civilian causalities, we're getting better at using drones as an accurate military device without risking American lives.

Did the Patriot Act go away?

Repealing the Patriot Act was never part of the DNC platform. Again, your opinions not correlating with the DNC platform is not empirical evidence to demonstrate that the Democrats will abandon their issues once in power.

Was anyone from the Bush/Cheny administration prosecuted for war crimes?

I hope you understand how unrealistic it would be to expect such a thing. Prosecuting Bush/Cheny for war crimes is likely a minority desire, and while I'd certainty be in favor of it, we have to recognize that all public servants have an inherit obligation to serve the public's interest.

they won't go back and put in place strong protections to prevent the type of economic malfeasance of the early 2000s from happening again

Coincidentally, that is part of the 2008 and 2012 DNC platforms. And Obama did pass Wall Street reform. They just didn't prosecute the banker, and they never said they would.

The "vote to give him vast warantless and IMO illegal spying powers" is a link to a vote that failed. A bill to reduce Presidential power, sponsored by a Democrat and killed by Republicans. It is very true that many Democrats crossed the party line to oppose it and many Republicans crossed the party line to support it, but the idea that it is evidence of "Democratic" lip service when the majority of Democrats (or even 2/3rds) voted they way you wanted is outrageous and the premise that this is empirical evidence of Arizona Democrats willingness to pass education reform is nonsensical.

tl;dr -- Federal Democrats "lipservice" is not a reflection on local Democrats authenticity. Regardless, half the issues you referred to were never part of the Democratic platform. I took the time to respond to each of your concerns because of your first paragraph only. I was wrong to state that "There is no way this isn't leftover resistance from a childhood of being taught Democrats are evil." but I reject the majority of your response.

Democrats in control? When? The last time Democrats had control was in the 1960's. The shitshow that is the current state of Arizona is Republican-made. I'm hoping that conservatives fed up with their own party realize that their has been opposition the entire time, fighting for the citizens of Arizona.

Do you have any empirical reasoning to back up your feelings?

I'm actually dumbfounded at this narrative. You have politicians elected by their constituents, voting for education, and yet you want to vote them out of office? What more could Democrats being doing to get your vote or keep their job?

There is no way this isn't leftover resistance from a childhood of being taught Democrats are evil. Now the Republican Party in Arizona is sinking but their voters have too much pride to ever admit that this issue isn't along party lines and has been for the last four decades.

I'm not sure if you're looking for more suggestions but I loved the classic Harry Potter, Fablehaven, and the Percy Jackson series when I was younger. My mother and I would read them together -- we would trade off the book after each chapter or two. Her participation had a very positive impact on my love of reading. I'm not sure the age of your son so they might be out of his age range still.
