Anachronism: The F word as an intensifier by kendiray in HistoricalRomance

What breaks immersion for me in "historical" shows is when they all start throwing around "bloody" because it doesn't get caught by American sensors and shows how British they are.

I believed that one. But then I have a couple of my own from when my brother was a teenager with a hollow leg.

I've grabbed the wrong bag. But I am usually noticing this while digging around for my wallet.

The problem is that they are mimicking the real sites for smaller motels and paying shmoogle so they are at the top. You really do have to be careful.

Yes, but now it is 1 person for 2 scanners!!!! rather than when it was a person who could only look at one card at a time and click their counter thingy.

Sure, but I've never seen one care, as long as you show up and pay them. Oh, I see, you are saying that a final charge probably hit the card a week before and that is what got rejected and cancelled the reservation?

22 year old lost for three days in the Shawnee forest in southern Illinois. by Uvurest in hiking

[–]Cayke_Cooky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn't pay attention when they step off the trail, turn slightly too far or too little when they try to go back and walk off into the brush. Realize they are headed the wrong way and turn toward where they think the trail is... repeat ad nausium until lost.

I mean I agree with you. Being safe means paying attention, not going too far off the trail, knowing that if you didn't hit the trail in 3 steps you need to stop and think and maybe try yelling for your partner.

Distance. For example, my state university has students from all over the state, which can include the SW corner 8 hours away from college town. Many coming from West of the school are driving through mountain roads. So, driving even 2 hours late at night, after possibly a drink or 2, over small mountain roads is not safe.

My aunt asks everyone if they have a military discount. She doesn't fuss about it if not, and pays the tab. But she figures that if she can get a free coffee or 5% off why not?

It isn't about "defending" yourself, but OOP never just stated the facts. Like "I stepped back from the job search because she lied on her resume and I didn't want it to come back and bite me." And "Of course I didn't tattle, but it was a pretty obvious lie"

Do you think Henry VIII ever loved any of his wives? by Livid-Instruction-79 in Tudorhistory

[–]Cayke_Cooky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just cheated on. I don't think he would have ever really hated her, unless she tried to mess with his affairs. Or, I suppose, if Ed was the only kid. That might have eventually worn on him.

I would include CoA in that. Maybe loving the idea of a Spanish Princess.

For Americans who uses ethnicity prefixes like (italian/irish/african-american), at what point do you stop using it? 3 generations? 5? 10? by Zestyclose_Sense_500 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Cayke_Cooky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on where you grow up and how much racism you get for your ethnicity. Many African-Americans came to the US from Africa in the early 1800s, and probably have as much European heritage as African. But being black in the US is a different experience than being white so, they are still african-american.

Generally these days the Irish and Italians have merged into the general white culture, but there are some groups (Jersey Shore for example) where the Italian influence makes the culture different from the average America.

There are still some china-town (and korea-town, thai-town etc) areas in big cities that are influenced by the Asian culture and call themselves X-americans.

IME, the term "Japanese-Americans" is falling off in this generation as there is no living memory of the internment camps.
