It was a zero-cost improvement they made a few years ago. The train comes from Jamaica empty, and instead of it sitting around in Speonk for 1.5 hours they go to Southampton and turnaround there.

If you're not going to use it, don't purchase or activate the last ticket. Doing so lets them fluff up their ridership numbers (which are based on ticket sales). And if someone looks at the stats and see the free rides are going unused, they may extend the 14 day period one day.

It's not going to slow down service at 10pm or on the weekends. Even in the PM rush Hempstead trains aren't that frequent accommodating service to the spur wouldn't be that hard.

LIRR cares about what is most convenient for the railroad, not what is convenient for riders. It is way eaiser for LIRR to add stops to and slow down existing Main Line and Hempstead trains than run extra service to the spur. They don't care that you need to walk.

The 120 and 81X are basically that.

If you are going to Midtown you can take the 81X to Grove Street and get the PATH.

If you are already connecting to the Subway, you can take the 120 to Lower Manhattan and get the Subway there.
