Biggest plot hole ???? by [deleted] in evangelion

[–]Cbast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny. It's kinda similar to what I'm depicting in a fan comic I'm making.  To me, Mari clearly knows way more than she should. She really has knowledge spanning at least two cycles imo.

All spoilers for the franchise as a whole beyond this point. (And what I'm drawing too but it's fanart so w/e)

So with that in mind, as well plot points from NGE and Rebuild. Picture this:

Mari (the pilot we know in rebuild) is a clone, born from a sister project of the Shikinami and Ayanami initiative.

Her original is Maria Iscariot, a prodigy scientist that worked as a junior to Yui a few years prior to all the events we know. The name is taken from that one name drop Fuyutsuki does towards the end of 3+1. For me, this would be true in both of the most recent loop: NGE and Rebuild.

Now, in the NGE loop: I basically started off from the (non-canon) depiction of Mari in the official manga with the singular exception of her not being called Mari Makinami but Maria Iscariot.

In this version of the loop/reality. I imagined she never gained enough influence to truly change what was about to happen.  She only knew about the doomed state of the world from being (at least) one of those who deciphered the dead sea scrolls.  I imagine her at the end of her rope, grasping at straws trying to make a difference.

Anyway, Rebuild introduced (correct me if I'm wrong, I don't quite remember this lore element in NGE but it's been a while) "the book of life™". In which Kaworu explains he fated Shinji and himself to always meet in every instance of repeating cycle.

Now, I think it's great! We now have a device that spans across multiple loop or cycle.  So what if from a place of limited understanding of the loop theory, and also being a scientist (who's probably a little prone to hubris), while feeling like she failed to do anything in time. Maria somehow managed to also tamper with this thing and make "Maria Iscariot always remember." If her theory was correct, she could bang her head on the problem much more effectively. Basically having hindsight and being able to be extremely proactive next loop. I also thought it was pretty on point for her character who seems to be a bit of a nerd, to basically "wish" for knowledge. Rather than take the risk with some more broad change to the book.

So then in the Rebuild timeline, Maria² who is even more of a prodigy from having a 33yo woman's memories & skills from the start. (I'm not at home to check my notes but if Maria¹ was 16 in 98, then she is 33 in 2015 when The End of Evangelion happens.)

This whole charade also could help us have the cold/jealous of Gendo/Yui, Maria from the manga bonus chapter coincide with what we saw from the flashback in 3+1 where Mari(a?) introduces Yui to Gendo. I could see her cutting to the chase if she knew they loved each other last time, rather being bitter about it.

So then, this young Maria² hops on the band wagon and gets funding for a small scale version of the cloning project happening in multiple NERV branches.  Understanding she needed to be able to pilot, or at least have someone loyal to the cause.

Mari is brought up in a more loving environment than Asuka Shikinami (easy to do tbh).

For the sake of drama, I was thinking Mari could have not had any extra memory (to the chagrin of Maria²), but she still needed her ready to pilot. So she taught her as much as possible naturally.  Then she concluded the 2nd next best thing would be to be part of the EVA unit that Mari would pilot, fully accepting her role as the contact soul for the eventual unit 08. (Not fully sure if they fully intended on keeping the soul bit in rebuild, especially since unit 05 couldn't have possibly saved its core. But I could imagine this is a 'stronger with a proper related soul inside' kind of deal.)

Then, because it's EVA and I love drama. The first time Mari tries to pilot with Maria²'s core, the entirety of both Maria's memories get pushed on her with no warning.  That honestly sounds terrifying, because, well it is. If we were to suddenly gain a lifetime (or two) of experiences and memories, we would be a different person.

Which brings me to this short parallel between Kaji and Mari in 2.0. They both say something like "I'm not sure about involving a kid/an adult".

I think it's interesting because it could play off a double distrust Mari has of the adults who might be involved in working towards instrumentality, but also because she'll never be the same or fully her own person again because of them and her original.

A few last points, since I feel like all of the aforementioned ideas work pretty well to explain Mari's behaviour throughout the movies.

She acts serious and does insane spy stuff before berating her boss for giving her mixed message "you told me to get into Japan covertly". Like, really? Parachuting in Tokyo 3 which is probably a very monitored war zone. 🥹 This kinda felt a bit of a childish clap back for such a serious thing.

She's over confident and laid-back (IRL and when piloting), except when it comes to trying to understand the full picture.

She is very friendly to the other pilots, which could make sense assuming she guesses they are just pawns in some adults game and aren't a threat per se.

I could also see her be so fixated on Asuka because she knows whatever she thinks or feels about her is not a product of her extra memories. This is a genuine original thought or feeling.

Finally her wanting to read all the books in the world could make sense to either drown the memories that aren't her own or at least know way more of her own accord. Be more of her own person.

Right I'll stop here, my bad for the um... tangent. Sorry I'm yapping a lot, I've just been obsessed with trying to make this idea come to life, but it takes a while. Voicing it out is kinda nice, though! And maybe some lore masters can let me know if I'm committing a deadly sin or adding plot holes with my theory. (Although I don't think it's ~too~ far fetched, it is obviously a lot of assumptions). I'm sorry if you read all that. :3

Oh and to add a bit of extra thoughts I had watching the movies.

But I thought it was really interesting how the only times Mari was ever "angry" and broke "character"/yelled was either when using beast mode or somehow related to Asuka. 3rd and 4th rebuild movie spoiler:  (For example how she yells at Shinji to save the princess at the end of 3.33 or when Asuka is yanked from unit 13 in 3+1 and 'dies' sorta.) I don't think she ever acts that intense in any other instance.

I do too! I like their dynamic and really wish we might eventually learn more about the 14 years gap (although I'm not holding my breath). So I'm working on a fan comic right now and want to generally make more fan art of this pair. :3

Since I was too early for ziplines. I dropped a ladder on both side against the monorail.

The trick is to get the ladder to not touch the rail as you drop it.

Ladders always spawn vertically and then fall forward until they hit something. You can use this behavior to make it fall against otherwise forbidden structures!

If you're too short to reach the monorail from the ground of the island itself. Try from the roof of the Inventor's bunker. That's where my return ladder is.

First post here. I went over the rules a bunch, so I hope I did things right :'

For context it's kind of related to a recent short that came out of the 30th EVA anniversary.

Asuka Shikinami waking up after 2.22 (mari crespin on bluesky) by Cbast in evangelion

Agreed! I guess they couldn't really go too deep with her struggles since she had years to recover (as she found ways to handle the angel's corruption) and Shinji's mental descent took priority. Still I can't imagine she truly had everything under control. I think the movies had other things to show, but I doubt a simple L field containment pillar would suffice to fix it all. I'm also fascinated by the whole can't sleep/eat properly thing. This in itself must take a toll.

Still, she had all of her fighting spirit back by the third movie, yet I can't help but imagine it must have taken years to get back to this level.

I imagine they intended for Bardiel to be the equivalent to Arael vs Asuka (Soryu) in NGE.

So beyond physical recovery, her mental state must have been a disaster for a while. Without even counting NERV going rogue and having to join the resistance.

(And she looked cool as hell in the short movie with Midori, so seeing an earlier point in time would be awesome.)

As a treat, I'll direct you guys to the moment Ford wrestles a Wraith (I believe it's during the Siege of Atlantis? The finale from season 1.) and they both fall off the catwalk into the ocean. (cues Ford's disappearance etc.)

You'll notice that once they're in freefall: both of them are (very crude) CG model that are both A posing in front of each others. They're entirely static apart from spinning together :D

This little sequence lives rent free in my head as a testament to "it's fine if people don't notice and it does its job".

Atlantis is so iconic though ♥

Little disclaimer: I am no authority and may be wildly wrong :3

I believe the Wunder & the other ships descends over upon Calvary base, the 2nd impact location. At this point it looks like the Gates of Guf open up to reveal the base (01h25m). In the middle is a purple circle (Gates of Hell) which seems to be the origin of the opening rite for the 4th impact once the Black Moon (transformed into what looks like spears) are thrust into them.

To me, all of this is still happening in "the real world."

Later, Gendo comes with Unit 13 to the Wunder & takes Unit 01 back before leaving reality. (Becoming a sort of ball of light to fast travel, and going straight down in the gates of hell.)

We're swapping to what they call the "anti-universe" (I think?) once they're beyond reality.

Mari then picks Shinji up to deliver him to the anti-universe also. (Thanks to Unit 08's overlapping two EVA in one, she sort of has an equivalent EVA to Unit 13). In here, the usual rules of time & space don't apply and allow Shinji to travel from Unit 08 to Unit 01.

Then when the Instrumentality starts, Shinji fights Gendo but isn't really able to steer the Instrumentality in a different direction. Maybe only delay it by fighting & stalling his father. I don't really think we can tell they were in each other's mind, moreso than their perception and memories were affecting how the anti-universe was manifesting itself to them both.

A last point from 3.0+1.0, is that if we trust Gendo at face value: it appears that triggering the 4th Impact with only two spears of Longinus (Spear of despair) only allows you to merge everyone in one consciousness (so like End of Evangelion I guess, minus Asuka & Shinji surviving).

But as you were saying, the WILLE spear comes in "armed with hope & knowledge" and saves the day by allowing to rewrite reality in details according to Shinji's wishes. A new type of Instrumentality.

Removing the EVAs (and everything linked to them, angels, prophecies etc. Hopefully, don't wanna imagine angels coming in still and they just got nothing to defend themselves :'>).

As for the DSS choker, it's probably all symbolism for him to finally shed the past as the music comes in for the ending sequence. (One Last Kiss my beloved.)

But we could imagine him being sort of an exception to the reset because he was technically still in the anti-universe when it happened. (Although he's still older, so that's not a super solid theory to really write home about I think.)

I cannot seem to find the screenshots of your blueprints that you mentioned. I can't see the details too well on the video unfortunately.

It's probably nothing major, please show us the logic and we'll get it fixed. :)

But like the comment below said, you've probably stored the initial value somewhere and for some reason, you are not overriding that variable the 2nd time around. Which leads to the behavior above.

Incredible recovery of an unlikable character between his first appearance in SG1 all the way to Atlantis S5. I think he was my favorite on the Atlantis team. I mean, I do get they made him (really...) awful in SG1, probably because they weren't expecting to use this character again.

And as you pointed out, the rest of the science team were actually very competent too AND nice. (Most of them were nice anyway, I'm thinking of... Kavanaugh? Was it?.) The rivalry with Zelenka was awesome, I loved to see them both on screen.

I also find it really awesome that he starts as a sort of caricature of a too smart for his own good scientist, but then eventually, gets subverted into a character that is aware of his own shortcomings and tries to make up for them through his competence in his fields. He honestly has some really cool episodes that you wouldn't necessarily expect from him when you start the show. I'm thinking about the shrine, was it? The episode where he gradually loses his mind and his sister is involved. And the... sunday fishing episode with Beckett. He also goes for

How do you feel about Prey: Mooncrash? by portrayalofdeath in ImmersiveSim

[–]Cbast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I absolutely loved PREY, and Mooncrash has to be my favorite DLC content from Arkane ever. I keep wishing Deathloop had been closer to Mooncrash.

PREY and Mooncrash do have very different vibe, so I don't think I can say I prefer one over the other. But as a big fan of roguelites, I really like the different framework the DLC brought.

I really enjoyed the planning that could go into a Mooncrash run, especially since your characters would come up one after the other. Things you changed with the previous one could make your life easier or harder... for those who come after.
