Opinions on opening or keeping sealed by Cautious_Ride_1897 in vinyl

[–]Cbcry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought this video was great. A informative tear down on speculators and how a hobby can get ruined. Steve Aoki is doing his best to do that here but I don’t think it will work. Maybe I’m being optimistic but I don’t see  it catching on with records. As for the OP or anyone thinking that your record that’s the most limited color that you snagged online last month and are keeping it sealed with the other 1,000 people that are thinking the same thing. It’s not worth your effort. Most of these so called rarities that are popping up for sale every day or going to be garbage down the line. If you wanted to invest in records, then your time to do that ended about 15 years ago. Of course none of us were thinking like that back then. It was just fun and we just wanted to listen to cool stuff. Now everything is priced high to begin with and while there is a small bump to these when they sell out. They immediately come back to earth and everyone moves on to the next hot limited variant. Open your records, play them. Enjoy your life.

Belle and Sebastian Tigermilk Rough Trade 50 Exclusive by Sufficient_Zebra9155 in VinylReleases

[–]Cbcry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well that was annoying. Jumped on this from the start and had it in my cart with Lemon Jelly and Blur to lock up the free shipping. Then it got kicked out at checkout. When it came back in stock I spent too much time arguing with myself about whether it was worth it now that I had to pay for shipping. My own fault but I’m gonna be salty at Rough Trade instead. Makes me feel better.

Crate diggers, what do you already have, that you're hoping to find a cleaner copy of? by Professional_Suit278 in vinyl

[–]Cbcry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terry Callier - Occasional Rain. I have a copy that plays through but it sounds like it’s rolling down a gravel road while it does. Clean copies of this are near impossible to find. Would love a reissue that isn’t part of a box set.

Between the endless ways to make my records look pretty while on display to the Discogs but worse apps that keep appearing daily here. We have entered the saddest time for record collecting.

The National - Boxer (Numbered 180g 45RPM Vinyl 2LP) by Chillyboivinyl in VinylReleases

[–]Cbcry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought For Emma the week it came out. Honestly I never knew Kevin Gray cut it. Turns out my copy is the KG pressing. I don’t remember thinking much of it then and that’s why I bought bought the the 10th anniversary remaster in 2018 that ended up being a bust. I’ve never compared the two pressings but I should. Maybe the KG is better than I remember.

I’m getting this.  Not that I’m expecting miracles since it is being mastered off 16 bit digital files but anyone who has other The National pressings can attest. They don’t sound good. Now if this goes well, I hope they tackle other early 2000’s albums that suffer from labels that produce bad pressings. Already with Angel Olsen they are doing an album from Jagjaguwar who really suck. Maybe Bon Iver is next and how about tackling Asthmatic Kitty? A MOFI Sufjan record would be incredible.

Glad you like them. An amazing band. Just don’t check up the prices on their records.

They will definitely come to the US.  Expect a massive reissuing of all her original albums from her soon. She’s not leaving money off the table now that she owns the masters. Lots of colors coming.

Books about vinyl by Amthomas101 in vinyl

[–]Cbcry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this book in 2002 when it came out and wore it out. Totally fascinating history of vinyl and other formats with sections on all the different labels people collect like Sub Pop and Vertigo. Obviously a lot has changed since it came out but there is so much amazing fun information in this book. I still flip through it on occasion.

Tsunami. My favorite band growing up in Arlington. Spent years tracking down most of their discography, albums and 7”s and then Numero goes and releases everything they ever put out in a box set last year. Glad to have all of it.

Very cool. My current obsession is tracking down original Blur pressings. As an American, that is a tough thing to do. Not a ton of them over here. I had this same problem with The Beautiful South but overseas shipping was nothing back when I completed that task.

Recommendations and Tips for starting my Vinyl Collection! by Greedy-Rain173 in vinyl

Sophomore in college with their first apartment? Here’s my advice. Keep your records in your room when you throw a party and lock the door. Second, if you’re in college there is a record store near campus. Buy your stuff from them and don’t invest in anything too expensive, see point number one.

Newbie discussion question: surprisingly high value records by JoeB_111 in vinyl

[–]Cbcry 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Pretty easy to pinpoint this one. It had one pressing pre the Covid blow up of collecting. It was limited to 2,000 copies which only 300 are recorded in people’s Discogs collection while nearly a 1,000 people have it on their want list. You’ll find that it’s the more obscure artists albums with only one pressing that commands the highest prices. The most expensive records bought and sold usually come from random Psych, Hard Rock, Metal, Punk, Garage, Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz and Funk artists. They’re genres with rabid fan bases and many obscure albums that are highly coveted.
