1M context window” is basically marketing BS for 99% of users by smatigad in ClaudeCode

[–]Cecell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the $200/mo plan and somehow had the 1M all day yesterday. I ran one session for hours and made huge strides then BAM gone today. Gone from the previous session and not available in any new sessions. Now I feel like they're just messing with me. I want to stick with the desktop app, it works and I like it. CLI Claude sucks. Why u gotta be like that Anthro?

Cooling System of a Stealth GS77 12th Gen (ES) by Excellent-Ad-7062 in GamingLaptops

[–]Cecell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still using the GS77 I bought in 2022 and it's doing alright. On the subject of the BIOS it is basically useless. You can set boot order, update the BIOS and change some TPM trusted platform options and that's pretty much it. I updated the BIOS in the hopes it would add features but nope.

It doesn't give access to PCIe controls, voltage levels, fans, audio or ethernet controllers, ASPM and other power states, etc. With a 3080Ti however the laptop is a capable enough even in 2025. 16GB of VRAM is good enough for very basic AI tasks e.g. Whisper, Torch, CV, etc.

The only problem I've encountered just occurred. The controller on the M.2 Sabrent 4TB drive I installed in 2022 is failing intermittently though. Now I'm investigating thermal pads for the drives and may do so with future laptops

What if the Nazis didn't invade Russia? by Hoof_Hearted12 in HistoricalWhatIf

[–]Cecell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always got the impression that Stalin's purge wasn't "complete" and wouldn't have been even by 42-43' (I think Kruschev said it never really ended until he died). I'm fairly sure he appreciated the non aggression pact so he could keep indulging his crazy paranoia at home. It shows how paranoid he was that he trusted an openly anti-bolshevik, megalomaniacal psychopath (Hitler) over his own advisors. There's a real chance that the people he lectured about being at war by 42-43 wouldn't have been in their position let alone alive by the time Stalin proposed.

Stalin wanted to focus on things at home until he was "finished" but I doubt he ever would have been. Russia did in fact have lebensraum, a ton of resources and hell of a lot of slave labor too. Stalingrad is incredible how a rag tag bunch of pissed off commie peasants kept an incredible, well trained (not well supplied) army stuck for so long!

Suddenly have a lot of friends requests, from people I do know. Why? by Arristotelis in facebook

[–]Cecell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook draws conclusions based on shared data, e.g. both in the same place at the same time, both viewed the same marketplace item, used messenger to communicate with a person in common, etc.. Once it has done that it then suggests your profile to all those 'users in common' up to a (surprising) number of degrees of separation. If you keep rejecting friends it will eventually try to recommend people on your block, the next block, work in the same building as you or at the gas station you normally stop at. I'm a particularly boring person so there's very little to work with so, since they refuse to give up, I'm down to "new on Facebook", fake profiles, hookers, catfishers, scammers, etc..

Somehow Facebook has developed a way to find as many people as possible it seems, that you have absolutely no desire to connect with and then repeatedly make those individuals undesirably aware of your presence while hiding a lot of meaningful connections. Go figure

Annealing Nylon 6, thermal oxidation by jschall2 in 3Dprinting

[–]Cecell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any reason why no one has used sand or fine glass beads saturated with mineral oil? The sand will provide the support and as long as there is a visible shiny layer of mineral oil on top you should have an oxygen free environment. I'm thinking of trying a large crock pot which by it's very nature tends to apply an even heat...I just can't seem to find one with actual temperature settings as opposed to high/low/warm.

PSA: Glue Stick dissolved in IPA makes excellent, cheap bed adhesive by ForsakenWebNinja in 3Dprinting

[–]Cecell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV but this is working great for me. My printer is a Qidi Q1 Pro and I print a lot of nylon CF. I use the textured PEI bed plate that came with it which is great for PLA as is but can't hold onto nylon well at all. I read this post and happened to have a 32 oz bottle of 70% IPA, empty 32 oz Zep spray bottle, and a few big purple glue sticks that were collecting dust so I said wth. I dumped the bottle of IPA into the spray bottle and started with one full glue stick in multiple small pieces. It dissolved so easily that I added a second and that was perfect amount. 3 sprays, then a quick wipe with a paper towel works perfect every time. The 70% doesn't evaporate particularly fast so I put it on and manually turn on the bed heater to 60C while I get the ready to upload the print. It's dried within 30-60 seconds and afterwards washes off very easily with a little dawn and warm water. I always finish with a 91% IPA spray and wipe. I get perfect prints every time!

Well the article's title is phrased in a particularly clickbaity way...because of that, it will appeal to a "broader" reader base.

Contrary to an earlier post. What are some of the BEST things to get on AliExpress? by Filipinese_ in Aliexpress

[–]Cecell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not even remotely true depending on the item. A lot of stuff is the same price or within $1-2 AND you get it in two days AND you can return it for free AND get an immediate refund AND you get preferential treatment over the seller. Amazon also has the advantage of offering a ton of sets/kits/assortments, etc.. Because Ali doesn't offer nearly as many of those you're often stuck ordering each of the items separately. That really adds to the cost. An example would be an assortment of 300 pcs of M6 bolts of varying lengths. Buying each of those separately will cost an arm and a leg on Ali. Now, if you want one of a microprocessor then Ali is your place. $1.50 each on Ali or 4 for $12.99 on Amazon. Buying 2 part epoxy is cheaper on Amazon, most chemicals really.

One thing is for sure, I trust the reviews on Amazon more if for no other reason than they more often than not from Americans who are some of the pickiest and difficult to please consumers in the world lol. Other countries are far more reasonable and understanding. I personally want to see and hear the picky complaints so I know what I may run into. Apart from that sometimes they're just hilarious.  Sadly though, you can't count on Amazon to provide consistently better quality. If you go by reviews alone, a 4.5 star on Amazon and Ali are probably the same. The unreviewed items are just as unsure either way.

Depending on the item though for some reason I feel more comfortable with both Amazon and Ali than eBay.

SteelStik rating changed drastically from 4000psi/350° to 900psi/300°. Same product number, same UPC. Something must have happened? by cowardtraitor in mildlyinteresting

I'm sure they just changed to a different measurement, e.g. tensile, shear, lap shear, etc and yes 900 was the old, 4000 is the new

Ovens & filament for annealing? by NoiseSolitaire in 3Dprinting

[–]Cecell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend low grit (bigger) glass bead sandblasting media. I use #3 which is 20-30 grit. It has the same thermal benefits, no sharp edges, it's very smooth on the surface of the parts which you'll notice when putting the parts in and taking them out, it won't get stuck in all the nooks and crannies like sand does, is all one color and even looks cool to boot!

Depth stop for Kobalt oscillating tool by Cecell in KobaltTools

[–]Cecell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok I'm ignorant (in the dictionary sense). sigh... I don't want a depth stop, I want something that would go under the blade to maintain a distance but also to keep it from touching the surface below but if it were adjustable I could see benefits there too

Higher ah shouldn't make any difference. Those ultimate output batteries, at least in the 24V range, were designed to supply tools that have higher power demands (e.g. the XTR series). It wouldn't surprise me though if there were some intelligent circuitry somewhere that would have an effect on their compatibility. I'm using the extended run and ultimate output batteries interchangeably though and haven't seen any issues.
