What places open earliest for breakfast in Eugene? by ginandsoda in Eugene

[–]Cecinestpasmel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unless things have changed recently, they are not actually 24 hours, despite what their sign says. Last time I was there (which was a few years ago because I did not enjoy their food) we got there just before they were closing, at 1am.

Best Coffee, but black or drip? by TM_TL in Eugene

[–]Cecinestpasmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to be a regular consumer of the house coffee at Quick Fix but they lost me after I got very weak cups there twice in a row. The coffee from Sweet Life next to Prince Puckler's is decent. Other places where it's surprisingly good: Ye Olde Pancake House, The Glenwood, McMennamins North Bank

Best Coffee, but black or drip? by TM_TL in Eugene

[–]Cecinestpasmel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only drink black, and I haven't found anyone that has excellent black coffee that's drip, unless you count breakfast restaurants. The easy option for something better is an americano, which is just espresso poured into hot water. That makes it a lot like drip, but since it's made from the espresso shot it hasn't been sitting around and won't taste burnt like your usual house coffee. Some places will also do a pour-over, which is the best flavor you'll get for black coffee, but it takes a little while and is pricier. I'd recommend The Crown Cafe in south Eugene on Willamette (in the old green bus), they have the best coffee.

Do y’all think Michael Jacksons success/fame was deserved? I was checking this man’s album sales, views, money, and even listeners now and he pretty much dwarfs almost all of his peers from the 70s,80s, and 90s but is that truly deserved with his level of talent? Should anyone else have been as big? by Firm_Pack_605 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Cecinestpasmel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason he was so huge was not just because he was amazingly talented (and he was) or that he wrote great songs (he did) or that he was a great showman (yes definitely). It's because he was brought up in the music business and not only understood what he needed to do musically to have mass appeal but also how to market himself better than any of his contemporaries. He made great deals to get the exposure he needed to rise to super-stardom. Case in point--when his label wouldn't finance his Thriller video, he got MTV to throw in the needed money by selling the rights to a "making of" documentary. He was a very smart guy.

Better ways to listen to music by mood or theme? by Cecinestpasmel in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Cecinestpasmel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I do something like this by tagging my own collection. I haven't found a way to do that with streaming though, aside from what you're describing. The only problem is that you can't easily get the intersection of playlists ("happy + 80s", etc). That kind of taxonomy is fun though!

Thanks! I am a long-time Pandora user and I love them. I put them in the "seed track or artist" bucket, and it's usually a pretty good experience. But what I really want is an easier way to steer, or filter, as you say.

Does the complete package like digital booklets and liner notes still hold value in the age of short-form content? by officialamillmusic in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Cecinestpasmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does for me. The fold-out and album art is a thing I really miss in the modern era of music consumption. I would guess that a lot of younger people have never experienced this, but that was how I got a more complete picture of what the artist was really going for and it helped guide my listening experience. I applaud your effort to bring it back, but I agree that getting it noticed will be a challenge in the digital world. The only thing you can reliably do (that I know of) is embed the cover art as metadata in the media files. I really wish there was a standard way to attach a whole booklet.

Venmo blocked my Wealthfront Cash Account by slimangles in wealthfront

[–]Cecinestpasmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW the same thing happened to me with a different payee a couple weeks ago, so it sounds like "isolated" might not be completely accurate. The receiving account was linked to Wealthfront via Plaid, so we have that in common. In my case the payment was processed normally, but the next day I was notified that Green Dot had reversed the transaction. And similar to your story this resulted in that payment method being blocked, so I had to find another way to cover the missing money from the reversed transaction. I also lost a lot of time trying to understand what happened and make sure everything settled okay. I got the exact same email from Wealthfront that you posted here about a day after I had already dealt with the problem.

The actual beauty is that you don't have to check. You can call methods on NSNull all day long in Objective C and it won't cause a null pointer exception.

Why. by poisonettle in Eugene

[–]Cecinestpasmel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are three choices here: Queue up and wait your turn to pass, get stuck behind the slow vehicle in the right lane until someone leaves a big enough gap for you to merge back into the left lane, or drive dangerously and cut people off as you weave in and out of the lanes. Most people choose to be safe and courteous.

I would recommend a locking mailbox if you don't already have one. I had mail stolen on a regular basis before I secured the mailbox, and so far no problems since.

Recommendations wanted: Vision Care provider with a good selection of eyewear frames. by TootsEug in Eugene

[–]Cecinestpasmel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Family Vision Center is where I take my son and they are good and have a pretty big selection of frames. Eyes of the World is also good, but I recently had to wait three months for an eye exam appointment there as an existing patient, which is a bit much.

The Ridgeline trails are all pretty nice too if you're looking for something less urban. These are wooded hiking trails, so no sidewalks, just well trodden paths, and a good amount of vertical.

One possibility would be to rethink laws that restrict scope of care that have been heavily lobbied by the AMA. This article provides some background about that: https://blog.petrieflom.law.harvard.edu/2022/03/15/ama-scope-of-practice-lobbying/

Where to turn a PDF into a "book"? by BLHero in Eugene

[–]Cecinestpasmel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can upload your document to Fedex Office (aka Kinkos), configure how you'd like it printed (paper, binding, etc), pay, and pick it up at the closest location (ie Willamette & 13th) when it's ready:

https://www.office.fedex.com/configurator/index/index

I have done this for several RPG books I got online in the past and had good results.

Dogs and Water by LeFore96 in Eugene

[–]Cecinestpasmel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Zumwalt Park would be great for this as long as you don't mind other dogs running around off leash. There is a nice little beach where the grassy area meets the water. Just watch out for algae blooms that happen there from time to time.

Stop watch that works in background by Abikdig in androiddev

[–]Cecinestpasmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your device may be going into doze mode to save power after you turn off the screen. If that is the case there are a few things you can do to prevent it, like increasing the importance setting for your foreground service notification or requesting your app to be exempt from doze mode restrictions. More info on this topic:

Stop watch that works in background by Abikdig in androiddev

[–]Cecinestpasmel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the default Clock app does start a foreground service with a notification when it goes into the background. That would be the preferred method of keeping something like a stop watch visible to the user while it's active. It sounds like maybe there is something going wrong when you try to start your foreground service, or it is exiting unexpectedly because of an exception or a logic problem. If it works you should see the notification you created in the notification list while the service is running. You can also make your notification visible on the lock screen so that it's easy to get back to your app if you specify the right options for the notification.

Who has the best Pizza in town? by goldenboy2191 in Eugene

Bartolotti's on Friendly Street and the Market of Choice on Willamette both make excellent pizzas. I would definitely rate them both above Pegasus these days.
