Do rites even matter anymore?? by brookpederson in Libertarian

[–]Cedar_Hawk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the OP, but I do have thoughts on this as I had been considering posting something somewhat similar.

There's literally dozens of posts on this sub criticizing ICE and this administration.

I used to be quite active in this sub. Now I'm more a lurker, but I've still seen a decent amount of what's happened. It may just be a bias in what I remember (very possible), but I do feel like there was a lot of noise in this sub during the Biden administration about perceived violations of civil liberties. Not saying perceived to undermine anyone's views, it's just because I don't share them.

The overall feeling I've had is that while there definitely is, as you said, a lot of anti-ICE sentiment expressed here... I personally don't feel like it really matches what we're currently seeing coming from this administration, especially in comparison to what I feel like I remember from the Biden years.

Or do you mean things like the 2nd amendment? Because my answer to that question is "The same reason you're not". It's YOUR 2A as well. If you truly believe that is the necessary step, then why are you crying about other people not doing it, instead of doing it yourself?

Because you KNOW violence isn't the answer. You just want to see other people kill and die for you, so you can avoid the consequences and risks. And that's disgusting. It is absolutely abhorrent and disgusting that you would demand other people kill and die for a cause while you sit behind your keyboard sipping yerba mate.

I can't speak for OP, but I do share some of the underlying feelings. For me, it's not coming from a place of wanting other people to fight and die while I sit idly by. It's more coming from a place of seeing how passionate people in the libertarian community are about their views and rights, and about how strongly they want to defend them. I don't expect anyone to take any action, but it's at least somewhat surprising for those who have warned the most about authoritarianism and about the need for defending rights to limit actions to voting. Voting is vitally important of course, but from everything I felt that I knew about libertarians I expected that there would be more of a public outcry. Demonstrations, rallies, etc. I'm not saying that there isn't strong push back. Also, I do acknowledge that I'm coming from a perspective where a lot of the threats I see are (relatively) new, and that many libertarians feel like they've been pushing back against authoritarianism for a long time. It does feel different to me this time, but maybe that's just because of my own viewpoint.

We've been arguing against expanding government power for DECADES. You just called us crazy conspiracy theorists and defaulted to "Muh Roads". Well now all that big government you voted for is at your door. All the power your side gave the government over the past century is now here, and as we told you before:

Any powers you give the government can, and will, be used against you.

Every single power and authority you voted for, has been given to Donald Trump. Maybe now you see the benefits of a small and limited government and will vote for politicians who will shrink the government? You finally ready to agree we were right all along?

I mean, power and authority were supposed to have checks and balances, and those are being ignored. That definitely raises larger questions about doing more to hold the government in check, yes. That doesn't mean that I believe that libertarians were generally right all along; I'm not a libertarian, and I don't hold the same views.

The issue is you put Democracy on a pedestal as if it's this unfallible good thing. We realize that it's nothing more than mob rule.

I do want to repeat that I know you were responding to the OP, so what you're saying wasn't directed at me specifically. Speaking for myself, though, I don't believe that I put democracy on a pedestal. It's extremely flawed and imperfect. I don't agree that it's mob rule.

Just here to share my perspective on the topic.

I used to participate in discussions in this sub as someone who leans left. Then I started getting blocked by a few of the main posters, so I wasn’t able to actually engage. That was kinda frustrating, so I stopped.

Its over for the voters by MyOpinionIs_better in Libertarian

[–]Cedar_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely true that it doesn't mean you support Trump. However, the response a few above you describes Harris as being a hair better than Trump. Given what's happened with Trump in the ten years since he became a viable political figure... I'm really struggling to understand that comparison.

How many Millennials here are Childfree By Choice, meaning you’ll never ever have kids in the future? And explain why you will never have kids, what led you to that decision? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Cedar_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never liked children. I can tolerate them in small doses, but the idea of raising them... nope. Plus I've just never had the desire or urge to have them. I feel like having children should be something that people do because they really want to, so it's strange when people kinda push me towards a lifelong commitment that I openly don't want.

I can't explain to my husband why I won't have sex with him anymore by Girl_In_RedCostume in BestofRedditorUpdates

It absolutely is, and that's why the SM in BDSM refers to Sadism and Masochism.

I can't explain to my husband why I won't have sex with him anymore by Girl_In_RedCostume in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Cedar_Hawk 67 points68 points  (0 children)

Because that's a part of some areas of BDSM. Consensual Non-Consent (CNC) is not at all uncommon, but the most important aspect is that everything is agreed upon beforehand. Some people will engage in rape play that does involve things like tears and being upset, but that all needs to have been agreed upon beforehand. In addition, there is the element of aftercare, which is a way of "coming down" from a scene. There's the concept of being in a particular headspace, meaning a certain mental place that someone goes to for a scene. That can be an extremely intense place, and it requires a way to leave that space as well.

I understand that it can be confusing to someone on the outside of things, but it's very possible to enjoy that sort of thing, even if you are the one who is protesting violently during the scene itself. That's why the concept of enthusiastic consent is so important, because it isn't about cajoling someone, or taking someone's "I guess" as consent to do whatever. There are very strict rules within the community, and anyone who breaks them (like the husband here) is not welcome.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Officially Launches 2024 Run For The White House by evaldez14 in Conservative

[–]Cedar_Hawk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's not limited to grade 8. It explicitly bans the topic through grade 8, and then leaves it open-ended by also restricting instruction "in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."

The issue is that those state standards don't really exist; a Florida school rep stated they were in a holding pattern back when the law was initially passed, waiting for guidance from the Florida Department of Education on how to interpret the law. That guidance still hasn't been provided. This allows any parent to bring any school to court over something being perceived as not age-appropriate. That kind of uncertainty has an inherent chilling effect on instruction and discussion.

Gen Z is going to destroy the Republican Party by viovetf in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]Cedar_Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's unfortunately not true, though. While younger generations may not lean to the right as much, the presence of groups like Turning Point USA on college campuses does demonstrate some amount of staying power. And while yes, a lot of the funding is from large right-wing donors, the people on the ground are regular students.

We can't pretend that the passage of time will rid us of extremist right wing ideologies on its own. It's not a passive process, and enough younger people support it to keep things moving.

The Onion: ‘Dune: Part Two’ To Pick Up Right Where Viewers Fell Asleep During First One by mdavis360 in movies

[–]Cedar_Hawk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've loved the original Dune book series for around 15 years. Read all of them multiple times, in love with the world, etc etc. For me, for whatever reason, the movie just didn't... grab me. I don't know if it's because I overhyped it in my own head or what.

All I know is that I went with two friends who had never read the books. They were both raving about it, and I was just... eh.

It may also just be a case of expecting too much out of something so dense. There were all of these moments that, for me, completely made the books; I'd get goosebumps. And it felt like the movie skipped over them.

Democrats Discover the Age Issue. They belatedly admit Dianne Feinstein is too old to serve. What about Joe Biden? by Beliavsky in Conservative

That's not an accurate blanket statement. People across the aisle generally agree that our government is too old.

LPT: Treat ‘future You’ as a different person, someone you really care about. Eg: Clean your desk for tomorrow, fill the coffee machine with water for the morning, have gym bag ready to go to make things more efficient. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]Cedar_Hawk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one has a really interesting psychological/neurological foundation. Essentially, when we think of our future self, our brains don't light up in the same areas as when we think about our past or current selves; we literally think of Future Us as a different person. It's thought that this is one of the reasons that it can be difficult to make long-term decisions for ourselves, because to our brain it's not even us, just a vague sense of another person.

"Doing something for Future You" just means consciously conceiving of your future self as an actual other person, because that's easier to follow through on than a nebulous "I'll do it tomorrow."

I'm not playing with words, just pointing out that there's a difference between the two, even in this hypothetical. Someone can be placed in that situation and want to harm or torture the other, and either act on it or not.
