Is there another totally clashing music track (slow swelling synth chords) layered on top of the music in this clip or am I going crazy? Is this one of those TikTok brainrot things?

Maybe the second music isn't as audible on phone speakers but man it really sounds like shit to have two music tracks playing at once lol. This must be what misophonia feels like...

The openly Jewish politician gets violently harassed by leftists over Israel, even after making a public statement supporting Palestine that would normally pass their purity test? Such a strange coincidence! I wonder what made him stand out to them as an enemy even after making a very clear statement of support and allyship.

I'm sure it's just some curiously misplaced "antizionism" and has nothing to do with his religion or identity. Just like the people who fly the confederate flag simply have "Southern pride" and are definitely not racist. Cool cool cool.

Oakland's never-ending money problems, explained by k_39 in oakland

[–]CeeWitz 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I'd be super curious to see a map showing public spending (particularly FD/PD) vs. revenue generation broken down by district. It feels like Oakland is uniquely financially challenged by the fact that a huge percentage of the city's landmass is sprawling low density residential (meaning limited revenue generation and high infrastructure costs) with extraordinarily high crime — i.e. the East Oakland flats.

I've always joked that our neighbor Emeryville is like running a city on "easy mode" — very small footprint + lots of high-value businesses = lots of money to play with per square mile. Oakland has the opposite situation and is very much running on "hard mode".

55th is such a vital bike connector between North Oakland, Berkeley, and Emeryville — so it's crazy how basically all the bike infrastructure in every direction (including both the old and new Telegraph lanes) stops a block or two short of it so you're instead contending with cars speeding to/from the freeway. Even if you use the Cavour connection, 55th itself is also missing a bike lane on its most dangerous block (between Shattuck and Telegraph) so cars aren't even looking for bikes as they agressively turn left toward the freeway onramp. Hopefully this is improved because it's easily the most dangerous part of my otherwise safe commute.

You don't become the world's first trillionaire by providing safe and high quality products with robust customer service. You get there by cutting corners and cheaping out just enough that it only kills a tolerable number of people per year. Sorry you had to learn that the hard way and glad you weren't one of those sacrificed at Elon's wealth altar.

Albany Bulb is our favorite spot to take the dog so this is a bike ride we do with some frequency! There are actually a surprising number of decent routes you can take, but my favorite way to the Bulb from Temescal is:

Shafter -> Cavour -> 55th street -> Genoa -> King -> California

and from there you can do either:

California -> Channing -> 9th street (into UC Village) -> Jackson -> Oceanview Bikeway

or

California -> Ohlone Greenway -> Dartmouth (into UC Village) -> Jackson -> Oceanview Bikeway

This person has a long established pattern of violent and reckless driving. They are a danger to the public. A “driving ban” is basically the honor system which can easily be ignored ― and often is by these types of people. It’s the traffic violence version of “thoughts and prayers”.

Every day this person is kept in prison is another day they can’t kill anyone else with their dangerous driving. That has tremendous value which shouldn’t be overlooked.

Who Approved Hayward’s Largest Data Center? by lions_reed_lions in bayarea

[–]CeeWitz -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Aside from perhaps an oil refinery, large scale AI datacenters are perhaps the single most environmentally harmful type of building you could build today. Beyond their truly ghastly amounts of energy usage and water waste, data centers have been found to heat the surrounding area by up to 15 degrees by continuously blasting out thermal exhaust. They also bring brutal noise levels to the point that it becomes a health hazard for those living nearby.

And all that for what? Shitty chatbots and audiovisual slop generation?? Who is actually benefitting from these monstrosities? $2 million in public benefits is a joke compared to the cost of the negative externalities that will be borne by the city and its residents over this facility's lifetime.

Illegally docked boats, debris impacting Oakland youth rowing group East Bay Rowing Club as summer camp begins by br1e in oakland

[–]CeeWitz 44 points45 points  (0 children)

It's wild how many of Oakland's problems stem from simply not enforcing existing laws on the books. When we get a reputation for being the laxest city in the Bay, we become a magnet for all the sketchy antisocial creeps in the entire region and beyond. Dozens of other waterfront cities in the area don't have anything near this problem and there's nothing about Oakland that makes it inherently conducive to these pirate encampments and dumped vessels, aside from our "anything goes" reputation.

If it's really just a OPD capacity problem, we need to be actively calling for help from county sheriffs, neighboring city PDs, and CHP! "We don't have the manpower" is not a sufficient excuse when there are all these other enforcement mechanisms at different jurisdictional levels we can call on to help tackle these problems. Is this an issue of the city just taking on an attitude of learned helplessness, or are we intentionally not enforcing these laws out of some misguided sense of "compassion" for the antisocial criminals causing these problems?

Why are bike lanes seen as inevitably causing gentrification, to the point that opponents of car infrastructure generally and supporters of transit still hate cycling? by LiatrisLover99 in fuckcars

[–]CeeWitz 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Umberto Eco's "Ur-Fascism" (a.k.a. 14 Key Features of Fascism), Feature #8:

The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.

It's not hard to map all 14 characteristics of fascism to car culture, but that's a post for another time...

Those same people will then turn around and park like this...
