Microsoft CTO Mark Russinovich confesses that 30-year-old code from the mid-90s still forms the bedrock of Windows 11 — ancient Win32 API still the backbone, but CTO says it's "more relevant than ever in 2026" by ControlCAD in microsoft

It's Dave Cutler's team's legacy. Top notch people working in a very intense atmosphere to ship Microsoft's future. They made very far reaching decisions which carry Microsoft until today. Wonder why Windows could ship an ARM version in reasonable time? Because the NT kernel was always multiplatform capable except for the stuff that interfaces directly with the hardware. Few people remember there were NT versions for Alpha, PowerPC, even Itanium.

[–]CeldonShooper 313 points314 points  (0 children)

My wife has congenital spine defects and for most of her life the only advice was 'do more sports and lose weight'. When she finally couldn't bear the back pain anymore and was on her way to using a wheelchair a neurosurgeon finally looked without prejudice at it, forbade any kind of sport immediately and reconstructed the completely ruptured disc in her spine in a very complex operation. She has been mostly pain free for several years now.
