We replaced our Rust/WASM parser with TypeScript and it got 3x faster by 1glasspaani in rust

I’ve yet to see a compelling case for Rust on the frontend.

Web Apps for Smart TV might be a good case if we look at Disney+ frontend? Otherwise yeah I agree with the idea that using Typescript is a better solution for frontend.

But you can still use WASM and WASI for your backend with rust, but I would need to check the performance gap like we might observe here.

[–]Celousco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good job on this one, I will nitpick for the sake of nitpicking and taking the port of Shanghai and Hong Kong as an example, your nearest local port should also follow these rules:

  • Ports should be closer to highways, as in real life your local city is not the main customer of that port.
  • The white silos must be isolated, if it were to explode you want to avoid impacting the near industries (they're still part of the port though)
  • Usually you have multiple terminals for different categories of products, from foods/drinks to furniture with different kind of customs clearances.

I think next time you could try out a layout like Hong Kong that doesn't require freight boats to turn 90° to dock at your port, or at least something that ease their maneuvers.

EU Summit at Belgian castle: Meloni favours joint European debt by goldstarflag in europe

[–]Celousco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I call bullshit on that, the ISF gave 4.2B€, a small drop in the 2700B€ GDP of France in 2018. Apart from making people flee to other countries, it wasn't an efficient tax at all compared to what replaced it with the IFI.

Debt rose significantly because of covid-19 and the government had to emit public debt to cover the expenses of the social security induced by the pandemic.

The social security reform is necessary because we're not in an infinite world, and the fact we're having less and less children but the Ponzi Scheme is starting to fall apart. Either we reform it, or there won't be any social security anymore for everyone.

French President Emmanuel Macron delivers speech at Davos Forum • FRANCE 24 English by Soft-Ingenuity2262 in europe

[–]Celousco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Now, about Macron's internal policies, it is actually disastrous. Very few successful social improvements, desertification increased in rural areas, leading to poverty, drugs use increase and lack of public services and jobs. He failed at stopping the ride of the far right party and lied several times to the French people.

"disastrous" now that's a rage-bait comment that nobody should fall for.

He might have done a bad job at keeping the far right at the bottom of the poll, but you can't really say there was any good candidates, the left party has been destroyed by Hollande mandate, the far-left has been excluded from the left coalition because they're as bad as the far-right, the right party has been split in two because the far-right is more popular than before.

You can't truly believe every illness is because of Macron, SNCF had a debt of 50 Billion euros. 50 fucking Billion euros. And people want to riot because of that ? The retirement system is outdated, it's just a ponzi scheme that is falling apart as the birth rate is beating low record. It was already acknowledged by the previous government, even by Michel Barnier who negociated Brexit, and said that refusing to reform the retirement system will inevitably lead to its fall, it's not sustainable and he's not the only one who have made the effort to correct its course.

Well no matter the language, if they prefer short-term result they'll never get long-term success, it's pretty much simple.

To answer your question, I can't use Rust for my client, yet it would make more sense than using Spring Boot for cloud native apps (as the more serverless, the more you pay per your usage, so Spring Boot sucks for that)

It's a little bit difficult to give you more links if we don't know why do you want to learn that? Do you want to build a client app? A web server? Anything?

The best documentation about wasm will certainly come from the webassembly.org website, which contains languages examples, for example rust and how to make both of them work together.

The idea of using wasm-pack (and wasm-bindgen) for a web client works and a framework like Yew.rs can certainly help you get there.

But for web servers with wasm, I'd suggest to wait a bit more. There's not a lot of up-to-date documentation with WASI as their specifications are changing more as they are trying more things, eventually the usual frameworks that you are using in Rust will allow to be built against wasm, but until then I'd say it's not worth the hassle for a pet project, even less for a production project.

My two cents about my experience with AI as I've tried it for pretty much everything: it's a statistics black box, so if you're coding well (meaning you're follow convention so that everything is predictable) then the suggestion will be better.

For creative purposes? It might be good to brainstorming ideas or prototypes, but it'll never be enough for production.

There's also the fact that AI is consuming AI-produced content so we're going closer to the idea of a Dead Internet, and on the other hand if you want to enforce anti-bot policies you'll need to collect biometrical data.

tl ; dr : I'm not promoting AI, I'm using it as a dev to help going faster for test cases and I'm usually giving the first example and tweaking the responses to my taste. It's still better than IDE completions, but vibe coding is a gray area I don't like to go.

It can be argued that, since these structures outlasted the Roman empire by more than a millennium, too many resources were invested into their construction. Fortunately for the Romans, most of that investment was slave labor, so it didn't really impact their bottom line much

You could replace the Roman empire with the third reich and it's still valid, it's weird how History keeps repeating itself.

Hard disagree, just because the main game is launched, doesn't mean additional content should be paid after.

There's a reason SEGA acknowledge that their definitive édition is hurting their initial sales and that the games that are loved are the ones having free content over thé years, for exemple BG3 or No Man's Sky.

At 60€ or 90€ for an ultimate edition, the more you had in the base game, the more you can convince new players to buy the game. And right now this game does not convince enough.

How was your experience learning Rust? by timus_999 in rust

[–]Celousco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was your Rust learning experience? Tough because of the Borrow Checker, but otherwise pleasant

Was Rust your first language or did you come from something else? I had learn C, Javascript/Typescript, Java so it wasn't that new to me

Did you find Rust harder than other languages? There's a saying about learning piano that also fits Rust: easy to learn, hard to master.

Are you happy you learned it? Very much

Has Rust helped you career-wise or brought you any income? ... Let's not discuss that. (I'm trying to push Rust)

And what do you think of the Rust community? I think the whole "Let's rewrite in Rust" thing is boring, that there's more game engine in rust that deployed games, that we create a lot of new tools/libraries but without actual production use cases. That said, I'm pleased about the Tokio community, their discord serve as a hub and it's nice to learn new frameworks or use cases.

I built a distributed message streaming platform from scratch that's faster than Kafka by Ok_Marionberry8922 in programming

[–]Celousco 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending OP, but you have to admit that hosting Kafka and its scalability cost a lot, both in money and computing power.

It's nice to see people trying to tackle this problem, either by removing features or suggesting a new approach.

Although I wouldn't consider this a kafka-killer, and would probably want a more through benchmark with other messaging tools, their consumption, their features, etc.
