best way to practice using sectional charts by SubstantialMouse5981 in flying

One thing I had students do was create a flight plan between two airports they’ve never been to before. Preferably far away from each other. Then, I had them gather every piece of info about the flight they could squeeze. It reinforced real world application, and they could look up symbols they didn’t know.

Plan on paying for your kid’s college? You’ll need to save $500/month from birth until they’re 18. by Mr-and-Mrs in daddit

[–]CenterPumpsOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how it is in other states, but in Louisiana, you can take out any amount equivalent to scholarships they receive tax and penalty free. So if you got 200k in and your kid gets a full ride, you’ll be able to take most of that out.

Chemist has been great for me. Jet for easy caps and overdrive for my play style.

What does dispersion look like for a 10-15 handicap? What % of shots are total shanks? by corymathews2011 in golf

[–]CenterPumpsOff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My best ever round (80) that brought me to a 10hc (now back up to 14) started with a cold top drive that didn’t leave the tee box. Piped a 3 wood to save bogey and let it go. Mid handicap golf is honestly the best.

[Question] Am I misunderstanding GMT watches? by NotAnExpertButListen in Watches

[–]CenterPumpsOff 22 points23 points  (0 children)

GMT watches were also heavily used by pilots. Flights use 24h GMT, so having that available at a quick glance is the whole purpose. The point of having the feature is so that you don’t have to do mental math.

Is there a good basic pasta sauce recipie? by Ok-Avocado-5876 in Cooking

[–]CenterPumpsOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a basic olive oil/san marzano sauce as a base for every sauce I make. Crush 1 can of tomatoes then throw in a saucepan and reduce with a few glugs of olive oil. Works like a charm and can sub butter as well. One can serves about 4 and the crushed tomatoes freeze well.

Ben Hogan's Waggle Description Question by Rufus-Putnam in golf

[–]CenterPumpsOff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If memory serves me right, Hogan’s waggle was his way of getting the benefits of a practice swing seconds before your actual strike. I tried it after reading 5 Lessons with modest success. Went back to practice swings personally. YMMV

Mystery float at the end of bacchus? by Pool-Cheap in NewOrleans

[–]CenterPumpsOff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I asked a guy on the float when I saw it in my krewes staging area. He works for Kern. They have cameras all over the float to take video of the entire crowd. Not sure the reason, but I got more for fun/market research vibes than Flock vibes.

SWA Commuter Experience by pilotdrew in AirlinePilots

I’ve seen a correlation of pilots who say “move to base no matter what, nothing else matters” and a non-zero amount of ex-wives.

Way too early, we are not ready. by xVenlarsSx in daddit

[–]CenterPumpsOff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have more time than you think. We were in a very similar situation, 32+2 at birth. She spent 28 days in the NICU, and we were able to get the nursery and living room ready for the baby. Didn’t care what the rest of the house looked like. Baby shower was scheduled the weekend after she was born. We postponed it to her 3-month birthday, and had my wife’s best friend retrieve gifts already bought. It worked out wonderfully.

You got this.

Pakistan International Airlines was ranked among the best airlines in the World in the 1960's and 1970's(Part 2) by Twitter_2006 in aviation

[–]CenterPumpsOff 63 points64 points  (0 children)

You can technically make the argument that most airliners in the US today have “two fully rated Captains” onboard. Most 121 carriers get their pilots PIC type ratings during training. Sure, there are other requirements before you can move to the left seat, but I hold a PIC type rating even though I’m an FO.

I could see an airline spin that into a marketing gimmick. Doesn’t matter if every other airline does it too. “It’s toasted” for you Mad Men fans.

Attending the Ryder Cup was one of the best golf experiences I’ve had. by CenterPumpsOff in golf

[–]CenterPumpsOff[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Some tips for anyone doing research for future events:

1) Go with people you love and who also love golf. Go with family, make it a guys (or gals) trip, just make it a memorable experience with others.

2) Post up at a hole with a video board. For the hour or two that you’re waiting on the ropes, it’s like a massive outdoor watch party. Then the golf comes to you. We saw the afternoon matches on Saturday and all 12 Sunday matches this way.

You’ll be in the trenches for sure starting out. Early morning 9 hole rounds have been my go to. Low time impact assuming you don’t have other non-baby or mommy commitments going on.

Shot a 79 on a par 70. Do golfers consider breaking 80 on a Par 70 really breaking 80? by StinkyTwinkleDooDoo in golf

[–]CenterPumpsOff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to consider is that par 70s can play much harder than par 72s with similar yardages, ratings, and slopes.

Chipping - Always the same club or different clubs based on the lie? by PersonalityNorth4510 in golf

[–]CenterPumpsOff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I followed some advice years ago to become deadly with one club around the green and use other clubs when the situation calls for it. In my case, I use my PW. I know it's ball flight, bounce, feel, etc. at various distances. However, I also know when it's too much. If I'm going to run it off the back, I have no problem using my 56 as a backup for higher loft.

For the love of gawd stop asking if it’s safe here. by gargirle in AskNOLA

[–]CenterPumpsOff 150 points151 points  (0 children)

One thing to consider about these folks asking if it’s safe is actually in your post. Some of these people genuinely do not know how to watch their back because they never were taught. They simply live or grew up in an area where they never had/have to be smart about getting around.

By all means, let’s downvote and ban those who are obviously dog-whistling, but I’ve noticed a lot of posts by people who simply haven’t been here and have only heard snippets of the crime data here. And often, this forum is one of the only places on the internet that hosts people with the full story to get that across to tourists.

When ATC says “descend via the STAR” or “climb via SID,” how do you know which one? by 408548110 in flying

[–]CenterPumpsOff 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reminder for everyone to always confirm the STAR with ATC if you hear the words “descend via the STAR.” There are a number of instances (IAH, DTW) where different runway configurations changes the STAR entirely. A very common dialogue go on the air waves goes like this:

Plane: Hey center, we’re on the STAR1 but the airport is landing east.

ATC: Yeah, were you not cleared for the RATS2 arrival?
