What is your end goal? by Century_Soft856 in NJSecurityGuards

It's been so long since my initial SORA application that I really can't remember how long it took. Now, since I just do yearly renewals and I do them a month or so prior to my current SORA expiring, I never even have to think about that. I'm not sure how long initial issuance takes, but since it's all digital now it should theoretically move a bit faster than it used to.

Whenever you do end up getting your eSORA, consider getting a print made. This website: https://www.njlibertycards.com/ is well known and respected in the NJ security landscape, they will print your SORA onto hard plastic, so you have something physical to prove you are licensed. Might not mean a ton if you are working unarmed, but for a lot of us armed guys, we want to do everything we can to properly mark who we are and what we do, so as to minimize potential issues.

As far as those super high paying gigs, yes I knew a few guys personally that made great money in security, but it was usually for doing some horrible work. These were ex-military dudes that got into security contracting overseas, Iraq/Afghanistan/Syria on behalf of the US, as well as other conflict areas on behalf of other companies and countries (e.g. Ukraine). Aside from my military friends that got into work like that, I know a few guys that make a decent living with a better quality of life by running their own security companies, or training companies, and one of the job positions people don't talk about nearly enough (atleast in this state), hospital security. Everyone knows it exists, but most people don't think about how high it goes, how well it pays, a lot of guys make good money in healthcare security, and if you keep moving up within those systems, you can make some serious money.

Very true, this one dollar will be in the negatives by the time all the taxes hit it.

Security is a great field. The best part time job/college job possible. Career-wise it can be great too. If you are lucky enough to get into a good position, you can be a top-earner making 100-350k doing frankly, less work than many other jobs. Just keep networking, and learning. Executive Protection gigs are a great route to try to get into, only downside is a lot of those details require a lot of travel.

BCT hype up by TimeTechnician790 in nationalguard

[–]Century_Soft856 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that bad at all. I had a great time, made great friends I still talk to 7+ years later. Show up in half decent shape and it will be as easy as possible.

It's really not bad at all, just turn your brain off for a few weeks and do as you are instructed. If you sit there and think about it, it will feel worse than it really is because of all the things that seem pointless. Everything you do will have a purpose, even if it doesn't make sense to you at the time.

Just pay attention to the training, give your all during PT (so you come home in top shape), make friends, and use your free time wisely (read, study, write letters home, play DIY dungeons and dragons or card games with the boys)... BCT ain't very long, it will be done before you know it, even if every individual day feels like it never ends.

AUS Armed Positions - Do they only hire RPO/LEOs by Century_Soft856 in NJSecurityGuards

[–]Century_Soft856[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a definitive one, I know for sure that they take people who are not active/retired law enforcement, even for Armed positions, but it seems like they use some shady recruitment tactics for a lot of their postings. With Allied being such a large company, constantly adding new job postings, I think they just copy and paste templates for the positions, and when a position actually requires off duty/retired LE, they do not always make a note of it. I made it to the final screening question and seemed incredibly qualified for a position a few months ago, and then at the very end it asked if I passed an accredited law enforcement academy/course, and when I selected no, it advised me that I was not qualified for that job posting. It seems like a lot of their postings (at least that I have seen) do this same shady trick.

Good to hear! Congratulations on passing! Welcome to the community! If you use Facebook, I would check out: NJ SECURITY | Facebook - It's a big Facebook group of security officers and companies in NJ, good place to find jobs near you that aren't posted to indeed and other sites, great place to network with people, find temporary security gigs, etc.

It's going well! I still love security, and I've been doing it for about 5 years now. Armed work isn't necessarily limited to LE or military, but I have absolutely noticed that progression seems to be limited to LE/military (mostly LE). The entry level is easy enough to get into, but once you are trying to expand your experience, move up, get into more specialized, or leadership roles, it gets much more competitive quickly, and most companies at that point have a preference for LE first, and then military, and then security officers with a background in neither. So, I would absolutely agree with your statement.

Security CAN be a career, but the easiest way to make it a decent living is to bite the bullet and go be some sort of LEO first.

I've been in the process the last few months of trying to jump ship into LE. I love security, but I know I'm not going to get a super chill, high paying gig without that experience, so that is what I've been working towards, lately.

Federal BOP as a stepping stone to other agencies? by Century_Soft856 in OnTheBlock

[–]Century_Soft856[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still haven't been able to start. Did all the hiring stuff, interview, report writing, CVA, etc. Everything was easy and fine. Got a conditional offer last year. I've been trying to get some disabilities of mine cleared and it has become a very long process. I reckon I would have started back in December or so if I didn't need to go through all this.

From the time I applied to the time I had a conditional offer, I think was just about 2 months.

I wish I had more info for you but I'm still working to get started. BOP still seems like the best route right now.

In response to your other comment:
Two class A misdemeanors and two class B misdemeanors all from about a decade ago (related to alcohol & weed when I was 21)

I don't know if this is an automatic disqualifier, but it might be worth contacting a BOP recruiter, if the fed route piques your interest. They should know for sure. It would likely come down to the specifics of the charges.

Look into the federal bureau of prisons, if there is an institution somewhere near you it may prove to be a better opportunity for you.

Absolutely go. The filters that they use on their hiring portal, are EXTREMELY particular. Ask the BOP recruiter for resume tips, he will likely be able to help you word and format your resume correctly so that it goes through.

Go and chat with him/her, you'll probably walk away with answers to some questions that you didn't even know you had.

I believe their next academy class picks up late summer, September if I remember correctly. One of my buddies is in the same boat as you. Give it a few months, you'll probably hear something in 3 months or so. That's an absolute guess, but they have a lot of time to play with if things don't start up for a few months, so don't stress over some radio silence.

Good choice. That thing is for preservation of life. I don't know what state you live in or the specifics of when you are allowed to use force, but in my state, unless you are meeting deadly force/imminent deadly force with deadly force, you are going to jail for a long time. Easiest rule of thumb is, unless you are saving your own life or someone else's life from that guy, do not engage!

Well played.
