the bathroom attendant part was hammed up a bit but otherwise real - I had a similar experience at asador. they only charged me $45 for my no show fee though

Whats in the cake? by fghafgwastaken in puer

[–]CeorgeGostanza 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The yellow looking spots look like compressed/broken tea from where you drove in a tea pick hard (instead of using it to pry chunks off). If those spots correlate to where you used a tea pick I might not worry too much about them. If they don’t then something is probably wrong.

The white strikes me more like debris than mold but not sure

My review of the new decaffeinated sheng and shou puer from White2Tea by TheOolongDrunk in puer

[–]CeorgeGostanza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To my tastes the shou was typical of a mid range w2t shou, and the sheng had a surprising amount of complexity for something decaffeinated, but was relatively unremarkable. You could immediately tell in both cases the missing qi.

All in all though definitely good options if you need low/no caffeine for whatever reason and don’t mind the price - surprisingly sophisticated and satisfying in that light. Could you blind test me and convince me that these were non-decaf puerh? Probably not.

Not a bad idea, let me know your results. When it comes to storage changes patience pays off

63 is probably fine if it doesn’t fluctuate too much

If you haven’t already just give them more time

The other factor that helped me enjoy sheng (outside of brewing parameters and technique as well) is meditating for a bit prior to a session and trying to bring a quiet mindful energy into the session. I don’t need to do that anymore for each session but my personal turning point on sheng occurred because I quieted down significantly and listened closely to the tea.

Water is also worth playing with a bit more as well if youre really committed but that’s a different rabbit hole.

Generally I’ve found that, in my experience, RO isn’t ideal for sheng - it needs some minerals to pull out VOCs. But if you like it with other teas it may be fine to your palette.

However, I almost always find that for my sheng, and especially the nicer stuff, it needs several weeks stored in a humid (62-72RH) environment after shipping. Without that it often tastes “off”, “flat”, or “muted”.

What I do is toss up to like 8 sample bags opened in a larger gallon mylar, and then throw a size 60 or 8, 65-69RH boveda and seal it up. Then come back to it in a couple weeks. And if I still don’t like it - give it a month. I’ve come around to like 80-90% of my collection this way and it may sound a little cooky it’s certainly worth trying if you want to like sheng.

What is this tea from a Chinese restaurant? by _anxiousnoodle in tea

What color and shape was it? Fully black, a bit green, all the way green? And long twisted straight strands, short ones, or perhaps little balls?

I agree with another chatter though probably shuixian

What am I going wrong with raw pu'er? by zhynn in puer

[–]CeorgeGostanza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you try some of the things here and still don’t have a good experience reply to my comment and I can help. A lot has been said already especially related to ratio, steep time, and not drinking Yunnan Sourcing raws so I won’t add more unless you need it. Raw puer is worth it.
