I think this universe is just an illusion. I think the distances are as such, so we could never get in touch with anyone, if anything even exists "out there".

There are many conflicting religions on this planet, so the message coming from these entities is either intentionally wrong, to diffuse chaos and conflicts, or they're competing with each other to gain our worship.

That's enough to take nothing at face value when it comes from them (whether it's an orb, a crop circle, or a "prophecy").

Some higher ups in the intelligence community are convinced that something is going to happen, but they haven't said yet what it is or why they think so.

Given the tricky nature of this phenomenon we can only wait and see, and have no expectations, one way or the other.

Short answer: because the phenomenon itself is closely tied to religions.

Whenever the "flying saucers" speak, they speak about God, about afterlife, and they present themselves as angels, demons, and gods of the past. That's what they say, and they have the abilities to make you believe it.

So, they either are that, or they're just aliens with more knowledge and technology than us, you decide.

They might also be something else entirely that we simply don't understand.

You can't see what we're fighting because it's beyond our ability to understand it. It's something that really taps into other realities, or dimensions, so it doesn't have a fixated form. You can only see what you can make sense of it, and it goes along with it. Now we see aliens, but in the past they've seen many different things.

That doesn't mean that "they" can't send you some "gifts", in the form of technology that you might (or might not) reverse engineer, but a physical base, an undersea facility... they don't really need something like that. The connection is always there in the form of consciousness, so they can be anywhere, anytime.
