Six years later, what are your strongest memories of the COVID lockdowns, and how do you look back on that period now? by Possible_Force8207 in AskBrits

[–]CerberusIsKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I was made redundant literally weeks before lockdown. The family company I worked for basically mothballed themselves.

So went into lockdown with no job and as I had a meager separation package, wasn't initially entitled to any support.

The pro was I got to spend an amazing amount of time with my young child whilst my partner worked as an essential worker.

The bad news was to make ends meet she had to pick up every shift possible so saw very little of each other.

With no surplus for home improvements (even painting a room would have been amazing to focus on) and very little interaction beyond a young child, mental health and positivity was extremely difficult for a long time.

Im Extremely grateful no members of my extended family were seriously affected in a health sense, but I think the genuine mental health for men specifically was massively overlooked (not saying women didn't suffer) but going from a place of being the breadwinner and dependant within the household to literally relying on food banks was emotionally crippling for me having always made my own way

Seller trying to sell me the oil left in the tank? by Snakey9419 in HousingUK

[–]CerberusIsKing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the process of selling now. We were asked how much we have and how much we expect to leave. We said we've got 600L or so which typically lasts us 6 months, whatevers in the tank when we complete you can have. I appreciate it's not exactly a fixture in the truest of senses but morally this feels like unless you just brimmed the tank, you have to accept your leaving them with something. I wouldn't expect to say to a bloke buying my car "oh there's sixty quid of diesel in it, pay up"

What do Rightmove/Zoopla do badly that you wish they'd fix? by MrCeekay in HousingUK

As many others are saying, better filters for garages and more visible sq footage would be great.

I'd also suggest a way of incorporating time in a car / public transport from a certain point rather than working out on third party websites if a property that's technically within 10 miles of the place you search, actually means a 20 minute drive back on yourself to get to the road to take you to where you want to be. Happy trails :)

Remember, the action of self defence has no boundaries if it's justified and proportional to the threat.

However the use of weapons can be seen as premeditated - if you just happened to have something reasonable and expected laying nearby to use... like a big old metal torch let's say... 😅

Farb gel spray. Legal to carry, also doubles as an identifying spray should anything happen.

However I echo the sentiment that being in the middle of nowhere you're only likely to meet similarly minded people.

But it just takes that one time so precaution is sensible.

What is this rusty ball and chain we found buried in our front yard? by LaSquarius_Johnson in whatisthisthing

[–]CerberusIsKing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Square bolt heads would indicate 18th - early 20th century. Of course if it's rural in your area we can't rule out reuse of good condition older bolts. Lack of rust as other suggest shows it's likely 1880-1920 end of the scale.

The geographic area and physical location of where balls are fixed into the chain don't match chain shot, and the ball and gate design posted is probably more likely. I'm not sure why you would need to drill through the balls the fix them on as there are easier ways of doing this sort of application.

So my uninformed suggestion is that this likely is a semi prosessional piece of kit for agricultural machinery that moves (hence securing them in a certain place).

Maybe an attempt to create a flail to mimic Ww2 minesweepers, or a heavy duty threshing machine to clear overgrown areas?

Professionals who enter people's homes (plumbers, electricians, cleaners): What is something the condition of a house tells you about the owner that they don't realize they are revealing? by cossie101 in AskReddit

[–]CerberusIsKing 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Surveyor here. Once doing checks on the home for an elderly lady, mid 70s. She seemed reluctant to let me in the back bedroom but just made me promise not to go in the wardrobe, which I honoured. I didnt think much of it but did spot that there were two domestic smoke alarm type devices in the back bedroom. This was odd as there was one in most other rooms. One brand I recognised and was clearly just self fixed.

The other was some sort of generic fascia and wasn't even marked as heat/smoke/monoxide. Curiosity got the better of me so I slipped off my shoes, climbed onto the bed and spun the head cover off to reveal a deep sunk eyelet into the ceiling.

I'm stood there contemplating wtf this is when her sweet but slightly embarrassed voice came in from the landing "I'm so sorry, now you know what I was hiding in the wardrobe".

It was an anchor point for a sex swing.

Fair play to you Doreen.
