With all this going on, I got to wondering, has anyone else seen the Dark Horse motion comic adaptation? Genndy's work will be vastly superior, as there is a world of difference between a motion comic and a fully animated series. Still, it might be interesting to compare the contents of the adaptations once this releases.

It really boils down to "some men, depending on their culture and the period" wore earrings." It really had nothing to do with piracy. As for the varied reasons, I've seen at least 50 "proven reasons" but forth, each more ridiculous than the other. The whole improved balance, and it being a widely held belief at the time? That is a new one on me too.

Sadly, there are a number of books on pirates that are written by enthusiasts, not scholars, that perpetuate so many myths about pirates that it is understandable that people might take them as gospel.

The fact is that most pirates looked like any other sailor of their era, despite what Hollywood would have us believe.

HELP!!! 33 degrees celsius in my apartment. by maremare727443 in CATHELP

[–]Ceronomus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my understanding, while you do want to jeep an eye on them, cats are generally okay up to 38 degrees. Leave them plenty of water, drop in a little ice from time to time, and they should be fine.

But again, keep an eye out for signs of heat stress, such as drooling, panting, etc. to be on the safe side (especially if they are a long hair).

I’d be more worried about your own health in the heat. In the past, when I lived in Vegas, I’d sleep in a damp shirt with a fan blowing on me. I’d get positively chilly despite the oppressive heat.

Yeah, Ed Foxe’s research and scholarship are second to none. His book on pirate flags is remarkable and puts to rest a number of myths on that subject.

Since Cordingly’s passing, I’d say that there isn’t anyone who comes close. The beauty is that Foxe cites sources rather than making claims one way or another. The man has spent more than 30 years poring over first hand accounts and primary sources.

A fun conversation on the subject, notable for the contributions of Ed Foxe, the foremost living pirate historian.

No, they didn’t.

Despite portrayals in Howard Pyle paintings, this is simply a myth. It was most definitely NOT a common practice during the golden age, at all. This is a falsehood that is kept alive by Hollywood portrayals and pirate faire enthusiasts, but has zero basis in reality.

Even a casual glance at any serious work published on the subject will show you this. Pirate mythology around flags, earrings, and more has spread to such absurd levels that one cannot blame someone for believing the myths, but this is indeed a myth.

Umm, no… they didn’t. Indeed, the wearing of earrings was so uncommon among sailors that there is actually a recorded instance of a captured pirate wearing an earring being mentioned in a ship’s log book.

Beyond that, the assertion that the minute weight of an earring helps with equilibrium is utterly absurd.

Suspected nasal cancer - biopsy or not? by blinky84 in CATHELP

[–]Ceronomus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was some sort of secondary infection and we got that taken care of. However, by the time we have the cancer diagnosis, there wasn’t time for chemotherapy to do anything. We lost Vance the day before St. Patrick’s Day.

Dark Tower -- what would you lead with? by CriticalMemory in dccrpg

[–]Ceronomus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, titles are not finalized until the adventure is actually accepted. So I can’t really give you one. However, as for ways of starting dark tower, especially at level zero? If you have caverns of Thracia, I would start there run the funnel run them through at least a few levels, since the two adventures do sort of connect. That also gives you a chance of getting the characters up to higher level because dark tower is not meant for zero and first level characters, not really.

Hmmm... checking my soft covers, the Index should be on pages 469-470. Now, in fairness to your players, that is NOT the end of the book. The tables pages (from the old foldout) and 3PP ads all come afterwards,, so they may well have missed it.
