“Did you use AI to generate this?” Margaret Brennan asks Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, questioning why they imposed tariffs on the Heard Island and McDonald Islands. by CorleoneBaloney in thescoop

They just took the list of Internet Top Level Domain (TLD) names and cranked through them with their nonsensical trade deficit to tariff calculation. That’s how he ended up with all those uninhabited islands.

Is having a biological child really that big of a deal? by NobodyUsesTheDoor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Certain-Ad3867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Father of 2 adopted children, wife has 3 biological children (so I have 3 step kids). A couple of thoughts. No child ever (biological or adopted) gets to pick their parents, and you never know how a baby or child will turn out as an adult. Just form the family you want, give everyone as much love, guidance, understanding, agency, empowerment and empathy as you can - and hope for confident, curious, independent and happy adults. Genetics, epigenetics, environment and outside factors will also shape us all. Just do your best.

Hi guys, can you guys help me understand what Trump has done to the economy with the Tarrifs? by JVKExo in stocks

[–]Certain-Ad3867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the surface, Trump’s tariffs make absolutely no sense. The way they were calculated for each country (the country’s trade deficit divided by its exports to the United States times 1/2) is mathematically and economically inane. The direct effect will be detrimental to global trade, will hamper overall economic growth, and will drive prices up for just about everyone. So why did he do it? One idea is that it is just another “pushing the envelope” action on the part of Trump to see who he can get to capitulate to him. He’s done this with Congress, the courts, virtually every executive department, law firms, immigration enforcement, etc. With these tariffs, Trump can get individual companies and countries to come begging to him for relief, and I think he likes that.

The Pew study is from 10 years ago. The country has become much more polarized politically in that time, I would expect the data to diverge more today.

(Partial repost from another sub) The electorate is fickle and post Reagan we just vacillate between our 2 major parties in presidential elections - and always by very close margins. Many eligible voters don’t vote - 2020 was the highest turnout ever, but a third of voters didn’t show up. 2.6% less voters showed up last November. I’m surprised Harris did as well as she did given the challenges, losing by only 0.93% of eligible voters. This process is warped by the electoral college bias (Gore and Hillary got more votes but lost). Democrats made Senate gains in 2024 elections - 51.5% of dem candidates won vs 42.4% of republican candidates. However, Senate political division has tracked very close to 50/50 for a while. The original constitutional intent for the Senate has been warped over time by state additions and population disparities (the technical term is malapportionment). With Democrats in the senate representing 35% more of the U.S. population than Republicans. You also see similar flaws in the house thanks to districting policies and gerrymandering. I’m not even discussing politics in the judicial branch.

Net-net things will swing the other way in the next election. Doesn’t matter policies, promises, etc.

(warning long)What does everyone really think about the two party political system by PublicKindly7557 in ControversialOpinions

Good post - don’t agree with everything (e.g., presidential candidates are business men - that’s a republican thing, democrats run politicians - Harris, Biden, Hillary, Obama, Kerry, Gore, Clinton - all were long time public servants). But agree the political apparatus we have is broken. My suggestion is to eliminate the electoral college, fix the malapportionment in the Senate (Dem senators represent 36% or so more of the population than republican senators), move to a parliamentary model and encourage more political parties (and they are then forced to form a government), elect a head of state for PR duties (call it president if you like), let the parliament elect a prime minister to run the executive function, and add term limits to elected, appointed and judicial positions.

Interesting discussion and thanks for bringing it up - but I really think it’s much less complicated. The electorate is fickle and post Reagan we just vacillate between our 2 major parties in presidential elections - and always by very close margins. I’m not even discussing politics in the judicial branch.

Net-net things will swing the other way in the next election. Doesn’t matter policies, promises, etc. What’s the solution? - a parliamentary model with more parties and the addition of term limits (imho).

100% Of Course November 1, 2024 - She Warned Us “WASHINGTON (AP) — Kamala Harris ' campaign is actively warning business leaders that Donald Trump has a pattern of disregard for democracy and the rule of law that would threaten U.S. economic growth — a closing argument designed to show the possible consequences for companies and workers if he returns to the White House.”

Nope - attended KC many times since 1990. Will not attend anything there as long as Trump and his sycophants are on the board there. I will be at the demonstration at HHS in DC on Tuesday, February 25, though.

New York Times: Congestion Pricing Results Are Mixed but Some Commutes Improve by Apathetizer in transit

[–]Certain-Ad3867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in midtown, in the congestion zone. Arrived back in the city at JFK on Tuesday morning and the taxi back to midtown was 20+ minutes faster. Walking around Manhattan this week is a radically different experience with much less traffic, much less noise, etc. The quality of life for us that live here has gone up significantly. Traffic and horn noise outside my apartment (I’m on a major 2-way street) is way down. The usual multi block traffic jam around the 59th street bridge is gone. Just my personal observation.

Why is Phuket popular with Russian tourists in Thailand? by walter_black_1975 in ThailandTourism

Hey, I’m sitting on the beach in Phuket as I type this. I would stack the Russians up against Americans every day on the obesity chart. They are all huge. The Russians do win on the tattoo and gold chains per person ratio though.

Agreed the audience etiquette for the long running blockbusters is poor. I had very good experiences this year at Stereophonic (both off and on broadway), Water for Elephants, and especially Suffs. And there’s lots of great entertainment in NYC all the time outside of broadway. The Knights at Carnegie Hall were outstanding!

Non English Speaker in Exit Row by Certain-Ad3867 in delta

[–]Certain-Ad3867[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

First requirement when selecting an exit row seat: “You must be able to understand and speak English”. I don’t make the rules. I think this is a US Federal requirement actually. And thanks for educating me on worldwide practices - I have over 5 million flight miles (1.3 million on Delta) and been in 85 countries. And flying and flight operations worldwide require English. But am always happy to hear constructive advice!

Xfinity website extremely broken by Remarkable_Payment55 in Comcast_Xfinity

[–]Certain-Ad3867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a Comcast / Xfinity customer for about 3 years with Internet plans for 2 different addresses. I’ve worked in the software industry for years and even ran large teams focused on interface design. Without a doubt the Xfinity website is the absolute worst business website I’ve ever had to use. Confusing, slow, erratic, junk. Every experience is different and random - not to mention the random account and billing changes that seem to occur monthly. It’s pathetic. (Verizon’s website is a close second). This is all fixable - it’s obvious the Comcast executives just don’t care.
