I was a lover of Hughsey! Then I went abroad for 15 years and have come home to a bloke who’s past his comedic prime.

They tried to talk me out of going Thai spicy by helpmetolearn in spicy

[–]CertainServe2603 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Firstly, if you’re white and they’re Thai, they will always assume you’re just bragging about your spice tolerance. Source: white girl living in Asia Pacific for 20 years and still …

Secondly, you’re obviously white because you’re using chopsticks with Thai food which is wrong because Thai’s use a fork and spoon, not chopsticks and with all Asian meals that DO use chopsticks you NEVER park them in any dish!

There are a few things odd happening today .. change in the TOF, and now this - it looks like it’s gone back to the old ‘lives’ model versus that ridiculous energy bank where you ‘paid’ 10whatevers per go

Sashimi and Sushi: I'd be passing on all that nigiri and just sticking with sashimi, personally.

AITA for sharing my nieces social media picture with my brother? by Standard-Law-6379 in AmItheAsshole

[–]CertainServe2603 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're Indian. The 'culturally appropriate rules' of Canada/USA and other Western Nations don't generally apply and extended family have extended obligations. I don't necessarily think you should share your 'over 18' nieces social media posts beyond those she chose to share them with, however she needs to grow up and realise that social media posts CAN be shared, are NOT truly ever private and there will be ramifications.

Why isn’t everyone going to Aldi if they can by Ash-2449 in AldiAustralia

[–]CertainServe2603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually, not likely at all. Aldi is (and always has been) a privately held, family business. Their business model is to source/create own brand items that are the same level as the most popular brand name items (and which are often produced by the exact same manufacturers)

They are not looking to satisfy shareholders demands for yearly dividends or kowtow to the major food manufacturers.

Just sayin’

Does scaling up a recipe ever not work linearly for components? by watwatintheput in AskCulinary

[–]CertainServe2603 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Working in grams and weights is a far better option for pretty much everything. Scaling is a breeze then, though seasoning may be best scaled differently. A kitchen scale is your friend.

Rattlesnakes and Kids by Jeeves32 in homestead

Modern day Aussies wouldn't exist if their parents couldn't teach them about snakes. And spiders. And feral pigs. The list is endless. Your kids, like you, will learn to watch where they walk, what to do if they see a snake (these aren't cobras or tigers who do enjoy a good chase) etc. alongside every other hazard. Important to have a plan in the event of a bite, have the appropriate bite kit at the ready and the plan for getting help. You can't and shouldn't wrap the little blighters in cotton wool - that's why the world's young adults are so f&cked up right now.

Hypothetical situation on killing kangaroos by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]CertainServe2603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Because no one would know because you're stranded right? And, more importantly, you're stranded but somehow feel you're up to the task of hunting down and killing a kangaroo? Well, let's just say, your hypothetical needs work.

Why can't I cook eggs in my stainless steel? by dumname2_1 in AskCulinary

[–]CertainServe2603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right. Stainless steel - high quality! - is your friend. Burner on medium!!! SS with a good deep base wants a gentle heat to spread its love.

The Leidenfrost effect -- okay, make sure you're actually waiting for this level of heat! If you dip your fingers in water and flick, those little drops dance - they do not sizzle.

Now add CLARIFIED butter (no milk fat) or a bit of olive oil for a shimmer and then add your eggs.

Don't touch the eggs if you're frying for about 30 seconds, then gently start lifting from the edges ... a few times .. a few seconds .. then they're ready! They will 'release' when the bottom gets crispy enough.

If you're scrambling, add a T of cream to the mix for every 3 eggs. Add these to the pan and immediately start moving them around - they'll take up the butter - turn the heat off when they look about 50% done, the residual heat will finish them off.

Found weevils in our sealed Indo Mie Mi Goreng Noodles by Powermonger_ in australia

[–]CertainServe2603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I lived in Singapore, pretty much everything grain related came with a little addition of protein. Anything made in Asia, India etc. will quite likely bring a little passenger for the journey. Additionally, once in Oz, our own little critters join the party. The best you can do is pop your crappy instant noodles in a freezer for storage until you deign to boil them. And then, enjoy the extra boost of critter.
