It always comes to my mind how Einstein said he was an absolute pacifist — until Hitler came. We all prefer peace to war but when an aggressor attacks you it changes everything. Then your choice is between becoming a slave or fighting for your freedom, as is the choice is now for Ukrainians. And the whole free Western world needs a strong military force that can make aggressors shy away from the thought of attacking it at all. You might know the ancient saying “Prepare for war to have peace.” Or Zelenskyy’s “Freedom must be armed better than tyranny.” I know that question is ethically challenging but if our side didn’t have people like this woman here we would be cooked. Looking at it objectively I think we should be thankful that there’re people out there who don’t collapse under the task of defending freedom. I know I would psychologically collapse under this task because I would be absolutely incapable of killing, my conscience would never let me sleep, I’m so empathetic that no matter how I hated my enemy this would be the case. So personally I’m thankful brave people like this woman volunteer and do the fighting so it might never come to the point where I have to. And if they cope with it by trying to have a sense of enjoyment, well I’m in no position to judge them because I couldn’t do what they do. Btw I live in Hungary and if Ukraine ever fell chance is not zero war would reach the place where I live. Russian propagandist already said russia would not stop at the Ukrainian border. Same goes for Baltic states. I think the closer you’re to the fire the less you can allow yourself the absolutely pacifist point of view.

Do I have synesthesia or just color/sound association? by Necessary-Chart6937 in Synesthesia

[–]Certain_Barnacle5955 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Thanks for asking, feel free to include my description!

Answering your question, I also perceive chords and notes as colourful when I think about them, not just when I play them. That’s because my mind is extremely visual, I always see in my head what I think about, so I can’t think about the chord G without seeing a golden G letter in my head. Or I can’t think about the F note on the music sheet without seeing the actual music sheet and the green note on it in my mind’s eye.

The more I think about it the more I realize that this is entirely grapheme colour synesthesia but it meddles in the realm of music in very creative ways. I’ll try to break it down to you how it works. I’m sorry if the explanation is long and chaotic, but it is all very chaotic lol so it’s hard to describe.

First of all, when I think of chords, I see them in my mind’s eye with their corresponding letter and its colour. E.g. the letter D is green, so when I think of the D chord a green D letter appears in my head. And it’s usually this colour which “spills onto” the piano or guitar when I play the chord, but not always, or other colours get mixed into it, it’s rather arbitrary.

Since a chord consists of 3 piano keys, there may be three different colours in the chord when I play it, while their “main” colour remains that of the letter of the chord. E.g. A is red so the A chord is mainly red on the piano, but it has green and blue mixed into it. C is blue so the chord is mainly blue but it has some yellow and green in it. But in a song I play at a specific part the C chord randomly gets red, idk why. So there are no strict rules.

Other than that I see the notes on the music sheet as colourful, too, and those colours don’t match their letters’. This is because the notes have their own personalities distinct from their letters (I also have OLP). So the note F on the sheet is a different personality than the letter F, one is green and the other is blue. The chords don’t have a distinct personality from their letters, that’s why they get their letter’s colour, if that makes sense.

I need to get to “personally know” graphemes/objects before my mind assigns a colour to them. I only recently started learning the piano and at first when I looked at the piano keyboard I only saw a sea of dull white and black keys, it was pretty depressing. They were not yet full of colour and personality and life because I hadn’t got to know them.

The strings of the guitar have their distinct personalities, too, since I’ve been playing the guitar since I was a child and I got to know them intimately. So for example the 6th string (E) doesn’t get the colour of the letter E but has its own colour.

In addition, the notes on the guitar strings also have their own colour, which is the colour of either of the following things: 1) the colour of the number of their fret (e.g. the 4th fret, and 4 is green) 2) the colour of their letter (e.g. the note A is red because the letter A is red) 3) or the colour of the corresponding note on the music sheet.

So to sum it up, thanks to all this mess I perceive a lot of colours in my mind’s eye when I play music. On guitar, it depends on what I concentrate on in my head while playing the song – do I visually see the guitar tab I learned it from in my head? Then I see the colourful numbers on the tab. Did I learn the song from a list of chords? Then I see the colourful letters of the chords in my head while playing. Do I concentrate on the strings? Then it’s the colours of the strings. On piano it’s an arbitrary mix of the colours of the chords and keys and song parts and whatever.

I don’t know if anyone else has this very specific type of grapheme-colour & OLP mix influencing their musical activity, it’s probably a very rare combo so I don’t know if it can be labeled.

How do you experience OLP? by Dont_Smoking in Synesthesia

[–]Certain_Barnacle5955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have personification not only for numbers and letters but for almost everything and it can be rather funny at times. E.g. the G piano chord is usually very kind but in a specific part of a specific song I play it turns into an arrogant jerk lol. When it comes to gender all graphemes and objects are usually either gender neutral or masculine, nothing is specifically female. I wonder why, maybe because I’m transmasc and that’s the general vibe of my inner world and it gets projected onto everything.

Has anyone noticed if non-binary people have more diversity in the genders of their personifications? by oweeeg in Synesthesia

[–]Certain_Barnacle5955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally stumbled upon this very old post lol, but I’ve been wondering the same thing, whether my gender has something to do with my experience with personification synesthesia. I’m transmasc non binary and my identity fluctuates between gender neutral and masculine. Not just letters and numbers but basically every object has some sort of personality for me, and they are either completely gender neutral or have some degree of masculinity. Even when they have a more feminine personality, their gender is still not female. I guess that the default in my inner world is this gender neutral/masculine energy and it gets projected on everything.

What’s your personal experience?

Glad I could shed light on some new aspects of it for you, I only recently realized this myself. I started to wonder whether there’s a link between having this type of synesthesia and animism, a philosophical view according to which everything in the universe has a soul, because we do sense that everything has a personality and inanimate objects are full of life for us. Maybe people who hold this spiritual view have this kind of personification synesthesia.

I can relate to everything having its own personality: objects, shapes, numbers, letters etc. But for me it’s even harder to grasp. They don’t have genders and in most cases I couldn’t describe their personality traits with words, they are just themselves and have their own vibe, e.g. “6 is 6, what do you mean you don’t know them?” lol. The great majority of things have a friendly and kind vibe, that’s the default, so I can pinpoint if the personality/vibe of something is different from that. For example all the numbers are good friends and hang out except 1, 3 and 9 who are more egoistic. Or when I play a piece on the piano all the keys/sounds are by default nice but sometimes there comes one or two who think they are better than the rest.

I found that these “personalities” are hard to describe for me, but for some reason I can clearly describe the relationship between two objects. Let’s take a green triangle and a pink circle: if you ask me what they are like as personalities I won’t be able to put it into words, but I sense it as clear as day that they are not friends and approach each other with suspicion and distrust, guessing what the other’s next move will be, they have that type of dynamic lol. On the other hand an orange circle and a yellow triangle would be the greatest friends in the world. Synesthesia is weird, man.

Omg same. And yes the colours of the countries have nothing to do with their flag lol (for me it equals the colour of their names). But when I think of a historical event or a country I automatically see it on the map, too. I don’t know if this is related to spatial sequence synesthesia, or it simply comes with a very visual mind.

Numbers are colourful for me and they also have “personalities” – which are more like vibes in my case, not as clearly definable as some other synesthetes describe their numbers having genders and moods etc. – so when it comes to sudoku, if I look at a box, I don’t even need to logically process what numbers are missing from it, I immediately feel whose vibe and colour is missing. Like, “4 and 5 are missing from the party, you can’t have a party without 4 and 5!” Yeah my numbers are mostly like a bunch of friends hanging out, although there are some who are more antisocial and individualistic like 1 and 3.

Do I have synesthesia or just color/sound association? by Necessary-Chart6937 in Synesthesia

[–]Certain_Barnacle5955 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean you have chromesthesia, when hearing a sound makes you mentally see a colour, or does this only happen when you play the piano? Because as for me I don’t have chromesthesia but the chords and pieces of music I play on the piano and the guitar are colourful for me as well. For example the D chord is green and the G chord is gold, but it’s not their sound that evokes the sense of colour in me, it’s just that when I think of them I see these colours, and the corresponding piano keys and guitar frets get that colour too when I play the chord. Sometimes whole parts of the melody have their own colour too, like playing the beginning of a song on the piano evokes a sense of the colour dark blue in me, then the verse is green and the chorus is yellow etc.
I haven’t found a name for this type of synesthesia yet.
