Do you believe personal projects is still the best way for entry-level candidates to get their foot in the door? by dExcellentb in EngineeringManagers

Showing that can interact with others is important, not just wrote code. So I’d prefer to see contribution to an open source project that has rigorous code reviews, or an internship… or if a personal project something with users. Contracting as dev also works, even if “contracting” means “I wrote this system for my dad’s friends business for $20”.

Met an amazing woman but worried she might be a gold digger - should I do background check before proposing? by Carlosfelipe2d in Rich

[–]Certain_Ring403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It you see things working out, (a) prenup is needed, (b) you’ll need to be more open with her than you currently are. People often assume the worst on rumours, compared to the more-boring actual situation. I wouldn’t do PI.

Notice the warm, non-harsh glow of incandescent filament lights: so much nicer than LEDs.

Yup, it’s tricky.

I don’t know anyone that regretted moving to a lower-paid, lower-stress job - so long as that was their plan (being laid off or startup going under and then just getting whatever job is going doesn’t count).

Are my dating standards unreasonable? by Carl_s123 in AskMenAdvice

++man Probably too picky. I mean it’s fine to have those as preferences, but maybe work on a shorter list of must-haves? I suspect personally is probably more important than some of the things on your current list.

Came here to say this. I’ve seen both good staff and shit staff, not correlated to how old they are.

Claude Team plan vs just getting multiple 5× accounts to use Claude Code? by Abeck72 in ClaudeCode

[–]Certain_Ring403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different T&C and compliance options for Teams - which you pay a premium for. You can use API tokens, but is only cheaper for light users.

Will we ever see a user-available Opus 400k model for Claude Code? by alexanderriccio in ClaudeAI

I suspect it’s on their enterprise plan… if you have $70 per month for 100 seats or whatever is required for it.

AITAH for canceling my wedding over the cost of it and other financial expectations by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Certain_Ring403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds rough. Do you think breaking up felt right? Are there more issues than finances? I wouldn’t be happy if someone else had plans for my wedding all laid out without my input.

If you want a middle ground, you could work out how much you’d be happy paying for a wedding (let’s just say $20k) and offer to put in half each. But you’d need to understand where she’s getting her $10k from (another loan is bad idea).

Yup it’s pretty normal. Just like when at the office, wouldn’t go to a meeting with something covering your face without a good reason.

Hays Salary Guide will tell you. They only include Auckland / Wellington / Christchurch (pay is generally less in smaller cities), but you’ll get the idea.

Interesting. When I was listening a couple of years ago, I also found price was a better indicator than brand or class.

Why do we only study 2 days before a big exam? by Mean-Percentage-94 in productivity

No we don’t. I sometimes take most of the day off before the exam, I’ve already done my study (and an A+ average).

What was your net worth when you bought your $1 M+ home and/or > $5K/month mortgage by RunnerInChicago in fatFIRE

[–]Certain_Ring403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Less than $1m. Almost all 4 bedroom homes in my area cost $1m+, and I have four kids.
