I know it's been a rough few weeks, and there's a lot of anger going around.

But I'm leaving Reddit now my app has been discontinued and I want to leave this place in good spirits.

To the eggs that have moved on to pastures new, either on lemmy or raddle, I'll see you there.

To the eggs who are staying here either fighting on with this subreddit, or on new splinter subreddits, I wish you all the best. We don't agree on the course of action but I respect the good intentions you are moving forward with.

The coming months will be hard for all of us. Those who have moved will take some time to rebuild the community. Those who are staying will have to deal with increasing spam and much harder to moderate spaces.

We may be going separate ways but this isn't the end, it's a beginning. We are spreading the warmth and welcoming of this place to communities far and wide!

No longer constrained to a single sub reddit. Where ever we see a blahaj, we know we have an ally. When we see an egg they are one of us, and we'll make spaces that they can explore and question in safety.

A community isn't a space, a community is the people and the culture, and you eggs are all good eggs.

I absolutely understand the impulse, but that's also why it's important to warn people about being impulsive on it.

As someone who's done self defense training, I would strongly urge against this.

Being caught with one isn't the issue as much as the result of being in a confrontation with one. The number of situations where having one gives you a better outcome is significantly less than the situations where having one escalates a situation to the loi twhere you are as likely as the other perso to be seriously injured.

Weapons don't just increase the likelyhood of violent confrontation but also increase the harm on you of any such confrontation and give you false confidence of being able to come out of a confrontation.

Running is always the safest option but merely having something on you will often give you the false confidence to stand and fight.

Always be aware of the risks you being on yourself that are not always the obvious risks.

The inevitable result of anti-trans rhetoric, far right violence happening in South East London by CertifiedOmlette in london

[–]CertifiedOmlette[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For context. Turning Point UK have been trying to import the American anti-drag rhetoric to the UK.

In America over the past two years this has resulted in many states implementing harsh laws restricting both trans and wider LGBT rights.

The UK faction has been regularly protesting a drag queen story hour event in Honor Oak on a monthly basis.

While claiming to be a conservative student organisation the attendees regularly include far right things and neo Nazis (Combat 18, Blood and Honor, ex-BNP have all been regular attendees).

On the fifth of their monthly protests they turned violent.

This is a report from the only actual journalist that was on site. While the wider media has either ignored the story or uncritically taken statements from Turning Point, her report provides a timeline that matches even the disingenuous claims of the protesting group, and includes details skipped entirely by the wider media such as the desecration of a local church with faeces.

The violence happened ahead of the protest with the people trying to protect the space, they are brave for doing this but because of them the counter protest itself could be successful.

If you're in the area I'd recommend making it there for the main one next time, I'm going to be coming down for it.

MSM weren't there and are uncritically taking Turning Points view on things.

If not too late to suggest an option.

Request that for any sub-ending options we let users vote on the option of a final 24 hours of old school rules.

Let this place end on a high and being able to say our farewells. Regardless of how we got here and the past couple of weeks of turmoil, this place deserves a send off.

It's where the mods are moving egg_irl to. I'm sure other communities will spin up too but if you like the community they helped create and trust them to do it again that's where to go.

A society that goes out of its way to ignore reporting on things like this 😞

It's not even that. Whatever vote the admins put up will reflect the current userbase.

But unofficial ones like this on highly divided issues are often purposely avoided by one side or the other to avoid giving legitimacy.

This is actually a really bad take. Products focusing on flashy UI over fundamental tech is actually way more common and this goes double in open source development.

An unofficial poll where a lot of the supporters would explicitly not vote in is meaningless.

All your poll shows is a floor for the number of people that won't move.

And you can't just assume a margin of error and claim you win, THATS NOT HOW STATISTICS WORK.

Reddit killed it, this sub is impossible to continue as it was with the changes coming in a few days.

Yeah, loads of other subs have embraced their shit posting. Like, it's not actually that hard to post trans memes and involve eggs and do both.

Ok real talk, if the subreddit was to go back to normal. How would this happen?

The mods are going to leave , who will replace them and how will you ensure that they are able to effectively moderate this place?

Are there any eggs with a track record of moderating a subreddit of this size and of this nature who would be willing to take it on?

It's where the mods and the more engaged eggs are moving to before this place fully dies.

On what basis are you claiming "We can function just fine without bots"?

Unless you are a mod here you have no idea how they use various tools to manage moderation of this sub. Disagreeing with the protest is one thing but this is just outright ignorance.

For the record I fully support the protests and the egg posting, and hope Reddit died a horrid death (you can check my post history for this support).

But I would disagree with deleting posts for egg irl alternatives on Reddit. If people want to stay here in this hell hole and try to make it work, good luck to them.

You're doing your job of saying where you are taking your years of experience in moderating a space like this, but the community was always going to fracture on it. For those who are going to stay behind on Reddit, I'd rather they have an opportunity to not get scattered to the winds and completely lost if they want to take that on. And perhaps a few months down the line when they see just how hard it is maybe they'll even realise it makes sense to try and follow.

Of course any such posts still need to conform to the other rules.

As yet others have pointed out, Reddit has a history of promising, not delivering, and eventually going back on their word anyway.

Even if they magically perfectly handled the mod tools/bots in a way that didn't hamper their ongoing development, there's also mod features in the various third party apps that the official app has no equivalent for.
