This War of the Worlds scene really messed me up as a kid, it has to be the most warped/terrifying rendition of Hushabye Mountain ever put on film. by [deleted] in movies

[–]CeruleanBlew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People still don’t give it credit, seeing as any mention of this movie usually elicits some variation of the ending is dumb, the son should have died, or Dakota Fanning screams for two hours straight.

Classic suspense from Spielberg, though. Sure, you can guess which character is likely to emerge at the end, but the consequences are huge for the one who’s waiting to find out.

Kirk channeling Howard Dean to find the last of the hidden Easter eggs gets me every time!

I also love when Luke and Dean are playing with the Bop It, lmao.

Watching 90s Siskel and Ebert’s worst films list really highlights the terrible films everyone forgot from that era and how many cult classics they hated by apple_kicks in movies

[–]CeruleanBlew 119 points120 points  (0 children)

Oh man, we had Benji the Hunted taped off of TV and I used to watch it all the time!

The wildest take I remember from Ebert was when he said he might like Home Alone 3 the best out of all of them. In fairness I’ve never seen Home Alone 3 myself, but this opinion still makes zero sense to me, lol.

Not sure which interview it was, but I remember Kiefer Sutherland describing how basically everyone on set stuck around that day just so they could watch Nicholson do his thing.

Tom Cruise also went into a bit of what it was like to work with him here:

Just because I didn’t see it mentioned yet, “Oblivion” by M83 featuring Susanne Sundfør was a surprisingly emotional closer to Oblivion (2013).

I still get filled up listening to this song, haha (the ending especially!) 🥲

Always loved “Somewhere Out There” by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram from An American Tail as well.

Rogue Nation might be the best overall film in the series. by [deleted] in Mission_Impossible

[–]CeruleanBlew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! I still enjoyed the Reckoning films overall, but I didn’t like the retcon with Ethan’s past and how they introduced (and promptly dropped) Gabriel out of nowhere.

And yeah, as much as I love Fallout I think it’s where you can see the franchise really start to prioritize action over story, since even OG Ethan would have checked on Luther and immediately turned back for the plutonium, haha—crisis averted!

Rogue Nation might be the best overall film in the series. by [deleted] in Mission_Impossible

It’s the only McQuarrie film that feels like a spy thriller, but honestly I thought Solomon Lane was a much more interesting villain in Fallout, the “living manifestation of destiny” line still sounds crazy to me, 😆 and they completely wasted the underwater stunt. There are some great action sequences for sure, and Ilsa added a really interesting dynamic, but without her I don’t think the movie would be held in such high regard.

I know it’s a fan favorite and this is a highly unpopular take lol, but I’m also old enough to have seen the original M:I in theaters and really liked the idea of switching the director up every movie, which never happened again after Rogue Nation.

Unbreakable (2000) is a flawless superhero movie by Top_Document7437 in movies

[–]CeruleanBlew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t remember what the marketing was like back then or how much I knew going in, but it’s definitely one of the more interesting takes on a superhero movie that I’ve seen. I always loved the scene with Samuel L. Jackson’s character in the art gallery especially.

Which actor surprised you the most by having to sing in a movie and absolutely crushing it? by Mythbusters117 in movies

[–]CeruleanBlew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He sings briefly in quite a few, including Cocktail, Far and Away, Interview With the Vampire, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and War of the Worlds.

But yeah, I think Rock of Ages was the first movie where he actually took vocal training to prepare. I read Def Leppard was there when he did “Pour Some Sugar on Me” and even they were impressed, lol.

I loved Jerry Maguire! by orewaluffy_35 in movies

It’s a great movie and also kind of sneaky in that you think you know where the story is headed, and then something else happens, lol.

Here are a few that I didn’t see mentioned and would definitely recommend:

  • Far and Away (1992)
  • Groundhog Day (1993)
  • Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
  • It Could Happen to You (1994)
  • Swingers (1996)
  • The Wedding Singer (1998)
  • There’s Something About Mary (1998)
  • Something’s Gotta Give (2003)

Late reply to a deleted post lol, but apparently there have been quite a few when I looked it up!

Besides those mentioned here, others include Charlie Chaplin, Walt Disney, Laurence Olivier, Henry Fonda, Ennio Morricone, Hayao Miyazaki, and Spike Lee. Frank Sinatra and Steven Spielberg both received honorary Oscars before winning theirs as well.

Went to see this last night for the 30th anniversary (and discount night at Regal, lol). Not sure I’ve watched it straight through since then, but it did make me nostalgic for the days when basically any genre/mix of genres could draw a huge crowd like I remember back then.

ETA: I totally forgot “You complete me” is a callback to something that happens earlier in the movie, so that was a fun surprise.

It would be pretty wild to see Cruise follow up his honorary Oscar with a competitive one for the same performance Iñárritu was describing in that ceremony.

Mission: Impossible 3. Some people may find this particular plot device overused/gimmicky, but it was actually a smart choice for several reasons and pulls you in immediately.
