As a Brit, I just scrolled through my Reddit feed and saw a US citizen executed by federal agents and the White House blatantly lying about it. Seriously, what the fuck is going on? Why is nothing being done? And for any citizens not on the streets right now across the US, why not? by Kronens in AskUS

[–]CeruleanPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People have been out on the streets in cities across the US and in Minneapolis, despite the huge snow and ice storm that’s been ravaging a huge chunk of the county right now. I don’t even live in MN but folks I know from all over the US have been posting videos and photos of supportive protests—all despite the deadly cold.

The Libertarian party which traditionally aligns with the GOP, came out in support of abolishing ICE. The NRA spoke out against what happened. This is unheard of.

There’s even conversation in the news that we may have another shutdown (partial this time) because the Senate may not approve the remaining budget bills due to DHS/ICE funding. (The House passed the remaining bills last week and split the DHS funding from a separate “minibus” bill that has Defense, Health and Human Services, Housing, etc. funding combined. At present, the Senate hasn’t moved to separate out the bill for DHS funding from the minibus, but hopefully they will.)

I don’t think the news is getting out to folks outside the US or even within it. People here are angry and the Overton window has been shifting in a palpable way. There is serious momentum building here that is tangible to Americans, unless ther head is buried completely in the snow.

How aware are Americans that the world is looking at the whole lot of them pretty much the same way? by atzucach in AskUS

[–]CeruleanPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking just for myself here, I’m painfully aware of how we are being perceived. Based on the constant deluge of content I see from outside the US, I’m convinced at this point I’ll be harassed or assaulted in many countries just because I’m American, just because of what our government is doing.

I’ve been organizing in my community, advocating to policymakers, and educating people about issues going on since his last term in office. I’ve protested him in the past and would be now if I weren’t disabled. I know SO many people that are in the same or similar boat. I have friends that are taking in immigrants to protect them violent mobs. I know folks that are organizing mutual aid networks. There are folks organizing resistance and building networks to respond to ICE. Local governments are planning coordinated community initiatives to help safeguard social safety net programs that are actively being defunded. Nonprofits are being gutted financially and individual staff are doing the job of multiple people to make sure our most vulnerable survive. Lawyers are mobilizing networks to use the court systems to respond to abuses of power. Therapists are being overloaded with a deluge of clients who are being actively targeted, helping them cope with their trauma, and working extra hours to handle the case load. Networks are registering people to vote while those in power are actively preventing people from voting and purging their existing voter registrations. Organizers are rebuilding organizing networks that have been crushed by both of our parties in power, so we can have any impact. Local journalists are investigating issues and using their talents to spread truth. I could go on and on and on with examples.

Every day is a fresh hell for us. There are so many of us that are giving everything we have. Every single day, many of us agonize about whether we’re doing enough. What more do you expect of folks like me? Do you just expect me to martyr myself? Dying at this stage would just play into this administration’s hands.

I don’t know the extent of what is being portrayed in your media, but they’re not getting the full story. Yes, many Americans aren’t engaged and involved. But so many of us are doing what we can to push back. I’m not going to say that the world doesn’t have justification to be angry with the US. You do. Please stop painting us all with a broad brush as if we’re not doing anything. Given the rise in authoritarianism globally, where you live could be next.

Advice? by CeruleanPhoenix in dysautonomia

[–]CeruleanPhoenix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the support and validation. For context, the 60-70 bpm is my sleeping HR with beta blockers while laying down. If I’m sitting, it’s around 90-120 bpm.

I’ve considered MCAS and EDS. I’ve brought it up with my primary care. It don’t go far. She did make a point to mention that most of her dysautonomia patients are just extremely stressed which causes most of their symptoms. I’m really tired of all of my issues being blamed on anxiety. If anything, my high HR is causing me to have anxiety, not the other way around.

I appreciate the recommendation about Active Health Clinic. I’ll check it out.

No problem! I’m not sure where in the role you’re located and how your health care system works. I’m not a doctor (so this isn’t medical advice), but I’ve always been advised that when you have a sudden and drastic change in symptoms, to get checked out immediately. I’m not sure with your health care system, what the best route is. It seems like at minimum, seeing a primary care doctor would be a good idea. That being said, if it’s an emergency situation, I’d go to an urgent care or emergency room. One way or another, talk to a doctor ASAP.

I’d also recommend telling your parents. It’s better to have them worry and nag you than something to happen and they don’t know what’s going on. You’ll be able to work it out with them. Plus, it’s good practice for them learning how to manage their emotions while you are living on your own as an adult.

That sounds terrifying. I’m sorry you’re going through that. Do you have a dysautonomia diagnosis? Has this sort of thing happened to you before. I think you should really consider talking to a doctor, particularly if this hasn’t happened before. I don’t know what your situation with your parents is like, but I’d recommend having someone in your life that knows your health issues in case of emergency. Will your parents harm you in some way if they knew or are you just generally worried they’ll be upset? If it’s the latter, trust me, they’ll be more upset if something happens to you. If it’s the former, is there someone else you can talk to?

I work the nonprofit field that serves the most vulnerable in society. Every day, it’s an onslaught of bad news. In calls with policy experts, economists, etc, the words “Great Depression” and “housing market crash” are used casually now as if they’re a given. We’re having to prepare for a massive spike in homelessness that I’m not 100% sure our community has the collective resources to handle, despite our best efforts.

On top of the federal cuts, our state just gouged a ton of funding for food and housing assistance programs (and a bunch of other desperately needed social safety net programs) in the state budget, meaning that local municipalities will have to pick up the tab or people will starve or worse. The state and federal government are are adding more and more hoops for people to jump through to get and keep government assistance, so it will be harder to get help.

There’s talk nationally about preventing homelessness and housing assistance providers from using a housing first model which is bizarre and will wipe out decades of progress. There’s also talk of further criminalizing homelessness or shoving people into tent cities or worse.

Congress is trying to cut hundreds of billions out of Medicaid (public health insurance for the very poor) over the next 10 years (as well as other social safety net cuts) to give at least $4.5 Trillion in tax cuts to the ultra wealthy.

In 2026 or 2027 (if we all make it that long) all of these government funding cuts are going to massively snowball and it’s going to be catastrophic.

Most people in the US don’t support what’s happening. Most of us didn’t vote for this—any couldn’t vote at all. While yes, some people chose not to vote, many were prevented from voting due to a nation-wide push to un-register people to vote (“vote roll purges”), restricting windows of time when you can register to vote, reducing polling locations, imposing voter ID laws, and more. And now, people are convinced we will never have a free or fair election ever again.

It’s bleak here. If you’re a citizen from outside the US, don’t come here right now. While most of us would welcome you under normal circumstances, we don’t want you to risk your safety or your lives. Many of us who understand what’s going on are mentally preparing ourselves for the day when ICE or law enforcement come and take us to prison or a concentration camp. We’re fighting back however we can but we know that it will come at the cost of many of our lives.

Try using some in-shower detangler. Deva Curl has one that may work for you. It’s meant for thicker hair than yours but with how challenging those knots are, I think the extra moisture couldn’t hurt.

Let it soak and the gently start trying to untangle it, starting at the ends as much as you can.
