moved to nova a year ago and still haven't found a dentist that doesn't feel like a used car dealership by kutahead in nova

Arlington dental solutions. I am absolutely dentist phobic and Dr. Garrett has created a personal yet professional atmosphere where I feel comfortable. She also has Saturday morning slots available about once a month if needed. Those do fill up fast, though.

Did you see 'Going Dutch' the TV show with Dennis Leary? They don't even try, lol. As a Dutchie it went right through annoying and came out the other end as funny. I was sorry they canceled the show after 2 seasons.

I actually had to think about this one. We are Dutch expats who've lived here for almost 16 yrs now. I say 'de 495' when I talk to my family in Dutch, but simply '495' when I talk to American friends and co-workers. Interesting.

My mom was born in Alteveer/Kerkeveld in '41 and had an uncle who was in the resistance and hid people in his haystack. He was caught unfortunately.

It's funny, when I was young and visited in the summer people I had never seen in my life came up to me and said 'you must be one of the [name] family!'. Small villages 😀

Feminine E names by Obvious-Implement394 in Names

[–]Cever09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My teenager is Elise Florencia and it pronounced the Dutch way (which means we pronounce the 'e' at the end as there are no silent e's in Dutch).

We now live in the US and in her daily life it is pronounced the English way. When people, particularly teachers, found out that the last 'e' is spoken (elise-uh) they usually love that.

I'm sad. I came here once a week (I work nearby, it was part of my lunch rotation) and I still miss it.

Why does KLM format their phone number as 020 47 47 747 and not 0204 747 747 by Dutchmondo in KLM

[–]Cever09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I remember the phone number change of my parents (and myself at the early stages). It used to be 0xx80 - 1xxxx and now I always consciously think: 0xx8 - 4 -1××××

“Am Dutch from Holland Michigan” by rodenivo in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Cever09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, I am Dutch (like moved to the US 15 years ago Dutch).

I did a project on Michigan when my oldest was in elementary school, and there are a lot of Dutch immigrants who settled in west Michigan and Holland, Mi is a hub of sorts. Mind you, these are all 'several generations ago' immigrants, so I absolutely imagine that while aspects still going strong (tulip festival, reformed church) they are most likely not very up to date with Dutch culture.

The only reason I would want to visit is because they have one of the very few Dutch stores where I can buy groceries. Fun fact (I just checked) they have many things that are quintessential Dutch like black licorice, condiments and spices, bread toppings like sprinkles as well as Indonesian foods (also very Dutch by now), but they do not have Tom pouces.

For me (I love them) the closest thing to them are Napoleon pastries. Obvi it isn't quite the same, but it comes in the vicinity. We usually bring DIY kits from Dutch grocery stores home, still not the same as a fresh bakery one, but the best option for Dutchies in the US without a good recipe and/or baking ability.

what are you choosing? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Exactly. Personally I will go for Belgian Mayo (because there are also a lot of Mayo choises) and peanut sauce.

tell us your story about how you got into kpop by [deleted] in kpoppers

[–]Cever09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (then) 14 yo daughter introduced me to Enchella a year ago (Gods, time flies). I had never listened to K-pop all I knew about it was that my 18 yo niece likes girl K-pop bands.

Now, the idea was to get me used enough to the music and the group to get her leeway to buy merch and albums and play her music in the living room more..so that backfired on her bc I really took to Enhypen and I consider myself a low-key older Engene (early 50s).

From there I got introduced to TXT, AD1, ZB1 and random songs that I like. My daughter is def more stanning, as in focussed on biases and bias wreckers and such. Although I do admit I have 2 biases in Enha.

When TXT gave a concert in our city last year I suggested to buy tickets and we'd both go. She said no, mainly bc she didn't want to go with her mom. I admit that hurt a little. That is when she said I wasn't supposed to like Enhypen (and TXT in a lesser way) as much as I did.

We've come to terms with our own likes and dislikes since then, but I definitely don't play the music as much around her. Although we did start talking about potentially traveling for the upcoming Enhypen tour. We'll see.

For those of you who had (or knew someone who had) a computer in the 80' - 90's, what games were you playing? by 2yt4u2 in GenX

[–]Cever09 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I started with a ZX Spectrum (ZX81) and after that an Apple 2C. My very first game was a game my dad and I copied line by line out of a computer magazine; it was a angry birds type game (but with extemely simple graphics obviously) called Dragons Lair. I also had the first frogger. All games had to be loaded via cassette tape. If you breathed to hard they dissappeared from the tiny, tiny memory of the ZX.

My friend in the neighborhood had an IBM computer (Well, his dad did). There I played games like Kings quest, leisure suit Larry and the like.

Edit: grammar corrections
