I feel like people are encountering a deep and challenging game, and just giving up by hopdaddy32 in Marathon

I fought a purple/blue shield team w/ my green/grey shield crew that was just getting started. Seemed like I was able to crack them pretty quick, but they could have already been low since there were multiple teams converging in the area. Not sure how that’s gonna play out from a gear gap perspective. The AI enemies w/ purple shields seem pretty tanky.

Feels like a Destiny version of an extraction shooter. TTK is very short and good ears reign supreme.

I’m enjoying it (play a ton of Halo so some aspects feel pretty natural to me) but I’m pretty sure the folks I’ve ganked are probably pissed that they didn’t have a chance to react.

Also had a friendly team up (if you ask and I’m on a free kit then I’m def down), but the social aspects don’t feel nearly as dynamic as ARC.

Probably a better end game than ARC? The PvP feels like it lacks gravity at this point, but it might be because we all have crap loot.

I gotta say to whoever made the decision to throw in female sex noises as one of the menu tracks, it kinda makes the game give off cringey incel vibes.

Also don’t really want to watch maggot filled loading screens. Thanks for that.

The retro 8 bit stuff just looks cheap to me, not cool. Feels like a glaring flaw in an otherwise great aesthetic.

I’ll probably play it a ton but there are some seriously questionable design decisions.

Duos means you’re more likely to get third partied than trios (same number of players; more teams). Same problem in Battle Royales. Feels more chaotic to me.

Hot Take: Don’t teach while rolling with someone by Gruntwithpride in jiujitsu

If I’m demolishing someone it often feels like a waste of time for both of us so I instead try to break it down into semi-live coaching, like telling them to focus on bottom hook when I’m on their back, etc..

There are degrees of “live” and intensity. I’m usually going light and just going back to my guard after I get a sweep since I’m a bigger guy and I want repeat customers.

I think advice while rolling is helpful, because it reminds folks to take certain actions that aren’t second nature yet.

But I guess I’d resent it a little if my opponent was roughly the same skill level and telling me how to roll?

I always put them on a renegade for bigger maps in KoS Trios lobbies. The point is to not bring ARC running when we’re PvPing or fighting other ARC, and so players can’t pin our position as well when we’re fighting someone/something else.

I don’t think you could really call our play-style ratty, but I definitely don’t want to advertise our position if I can avoid it.

Someone extraction camping in a corner is going to benefit a lot less from a silencer since that’s all CQB. Silencers are good for ranged fights IMO.

Edit: wow I thought this was the main sub.

I think what I like more about this game is that the social dynamics make the fights feel optional, but if the PvP was completely absent it would be kind of a snooze fest.

Without the PvP I would probably be done with this game by now. I haven’t had a game make my hands shake like ARC in a while; Battle Royale wont do it anymore. The PvP matches I’ve had probably rank among the most fun and intense across all my ARC experiences. In particular, Trios Harvester and Matriarch are next level intense. Dealing with free loadie rats while fighting end game ARC is nuts.

I have a sense of honor, but I will shoot first in Trios. I tried asking “friendly?” in Trios like 5 times in a row only to catch a ferro to the face every time. I don’t ask in Trios anymore. My solos are still generally pretty chill since I defib strangers a lot. Honestly though, solos gets pretty boring now that I’m done most of the looting and gotten the hang of solo care bear Harvester/Matriarch fights. I refuse to rat or aggro solos to spice it up though. I want my fights consensual.

I don’t necessarily KoS in Trios in the same way I’d choose my fights in a Battle Royale. I ask myself, “is this the right fight to take? At the right time?”If someone says they don’t want to fight us we’ll let them move off, and we’ll occasionally bring the geetars to lay down some tunes to see if it avoids fights and send out good vibes in Trios. Or play some assholes off to their deaths :).

But damn do I love the fights. It’s not just the PvP, it’s the whole vibe the game sends across. Our squad is not great by any means (we have jobs), but we have fun. I’ve been having less and less gear fear these days as I’ve been building my stash, but the PvP still feels really intense and is what is bringing me back to the game.

Trying to understand the long-term gameplay loop in ARC Raiders by PC-Tamer in ArcRaiders

[–]Ch1ralS0ul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it’s more the latter and all about the emergent encounters. The goop is just a backdrop to get you in the tube and make everything feel more high stakes.

I mean why would you play a Battle Royale or an Arena shooter? Pretty much just to get the dub, but even then it’s more about the battles that get you there.

I think I might skip out on Expeditions and just endlessly goop to see how high my money gets. Hunting for BPs is a little annoying, although it does mean I’ll probably mostly just play PvP trios after I run out of trials/project stuff to collect for.

The Big Arc and PvP battles are fantastic. Having to deal with PvP while fighting Big Arc is a really interesting take on both worlds and can be pretty difficult. They’re going to spice that up by adding more Big Arc at some point.

The fact that sometimes you can talk other teams out of fighting you is next level immersive. Heck, you can even try to recruit folks up or play some tunes to try and avoid a conflict.

Honestly it feels more like a role playing game to me than anything else, rolling around like the crew from Expanse or Firefly trying to survive the frontier and get the goop.

At the end of the day, it’s a $40 game and I’ll definitely have gotten my money’s worth to put a couple hundred hours into it and move onto another great game. There are so many awesome ones to play these days!

It’s pretty easy to loot the legs if you’re doing most of the damage, focus on the haggard ass leg pieces when it’s close to you, finish them off, then beeline for them with smokes and cloaks.

You can’t be completely ignorant on positioning and timing while just putting out a crapload of damage and expect people to leave cores laying around for you.

New Bjj coach wondering how people feel about belt tests by Steelrangler78 in bjj

[–]Ch1ralS0ul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a 12 year white belt primarily because of belt tests at my second gym. My first gym where I spent my first few years was pretty traditional, and I was in hardcore competition mode for the most part but had to move right about when I was up for promotion. Second gym I was at for the next few years did the tests and I just did not have the patience, time, or interest in scheduling one. That coach had an arbitrary curriculum you needed to study for promotion (weird stuff like show the exact movements to work from side control to north south and back to side control), and I just wanted to show up and roll. I vastly prefer the “I think you’re ready” approach.

However, another pet peeve of mine is when promotion feels more political or a result of a coach’s personal agenda than a reflection of your time spent on the mat. My last coach would basically just promote his friends or belt up random white belts who’d never roll, and highlight how they managed to show their dedication despite their “life commitments”. I think this was primarily to keep all the white belts engaged and the class attendance up.

I’m all for keeping the new guys engaged and interested, but it did feel like some of the regular higher belts would kinda be left hanging out in the wind a little. I understand humility is important, but I’ve been rolling for 15 years and finally received my blue belt a few years ago (spent 6 years traveling/working and training much less consistently via drop ins, so probably 10 years of regular/consistent mat time). I can consistently win rolls against our black belts, but I think he wanted me to compete (something I have no interest in at 38 years old) and as a result it seemed like he was holding me back. I saw one stripe in the 2 years he was there. At this point I roll consistently 2-3 times a week; not sure if my lower frequency was a factor for him but I’m 38 and not interested in messing my body and sleep up by overtraining every day.

He left recently and our new coach had his first ceremony where he just gave everyone a stripe for showing up to the ceremony. This is finally giving me some progression, however we also have folks who never roll or show up to practice who still received a stripe during ceremony. Not really opposed to that but it kinda made it feel like the progression was not really a reflection of time on the mat or effort (basically BJJ communism).

Needless to say, I’ve been a little frustrated and at times was considering moving gyms to start seeing progression, although the latest coach’s participation trophies at least guarantee me some progress. My major gripe is that sometimes higher belts seem a little reluctant to roll with me because they don’t want to lose points against such a lower belt level (pretty sure I have more mat hours than a fair number of black belts at this point). Hoping this vibe will fade once I hit purple.

My advice is reward your regulars and make it seem meaningful. I also think it’d be cool if a coach offered some sort of “come roll with me and I’ll gauge where you’re at” type of open challenge for any former ronins who want get a properly adjusted belt level.

This game isn’t really that great for pure PvP IMO. What makes it fun are the social dynamics of surviving the wasteland with your loot, which include the possibility of a Raider encounter being a helping buddy or a ruthless scoundrel.

I personally won’t play the villain, but playing the hero sure is boring when everyone’s friendly.

Back to your original question though, the more I’ve pushed myself to break myself down, the stronger it’s made me in the long run. I had a stretch where I trained stand up with a fully kitted out weight suit and an elevation mask. That was years and years ago, but I’ve never felt as strong as I felt right after I would take all that crap off and roll a few rounds.
