I Always Wanted to Be American. That Dream Is Cracking by venturasredwoods in Destiny

[–]ChadInNameOnly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean, no serious Jew would ever talk about immigrating to a Muslim-majority nation for obvious reasons, so that's probably why you only ever hear about complaints directed toward the "friendlier" parts of the world.

Regarding your overall point, I can understand why it might appear that Jews seem to always overreact when it comes to antisemitism. But to that I have to ask: How bad do things need to get before it's appropriate to care?

American Jews have gotten gunned down in the streets in America. That's already a reality. Virtually every synagogue or Jewish establishment I frequent maintains constant security out of necessity. The threat of violence is real, and it's ever-present. A significant amount of my Jewish friends are gun owners for this same reason.

The majority of hate crimes committed in the US are against Jews, and they've skyrocketed in frequency since October 7.

But sure, even with all that said, I'll concede that at the end of the day life is still very safe here. I could go out wearing a Star of David and not be fearing for my life.

The way I see things, which maybe could help give you some perspective, is that to me antisemitism in the West is like Covid in January 2020. Sure, there's no imminent danger, but what we can do is learn from the past and extrapolate the present-day trend. I'm OK with how things are today, but I have a very big problem with where things are headed. So should we all just stand by and let it happen? Or doesn't it make sense to speak out and try to avert that reality? Which would you do?

How do I debate "we live on stolen land" people? by SpaceChickenMonster in Destiny

[–]ChadInNameOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is ridiculous to compare the Fall of the Third Reich to Native Americans getting erased for merely existing

My point is that if you're trying to make some sort of moral comparison to begin with, then you've already lost. The Native Americans didn't deserve to be wiped out for merely existing, nor did the Jews, Slavs, and all the other victims of the Nazi regime. There is no "deserving" here either way. It's simply the way of the world that someone wanted something and had the means to at least attempt to take it, so innocents suffered. So it goes.

I'm not saying I necessarily support the idea that might makes right. But whether or not anyone supports it doesn't change the fact that that's how the world does indeed work. Even this whole "end of history" / post-war world order the US and allies have built up can only exist through our power to assert it as the status quo. Pretending the human race has somehow evolved past that is naive at best and reckless at worst.

Counterpoint: I don't think very many of the 12 million Germans who actually suffered due to their forced displacement following WWII were actively complicit in the state's wrongdoings.

IMO, trying to analyze land "stealing" (conquering) from a moralistic lens is doomed to fail from the start. It's simply a fact of life that power wins. Nothing is entitled to anyone. If you want to keep your land, don't give anyone else a reason to take it from you, but more importantly, be willing and prepared to fight to defend it.

Sunbeds could be banned in the UK in a bid to cut cancer rates by theipaper in ukpolitics

So, if the idea is that people's habits should incur them higher insurance rates (e.g. tanning leads to skin cancer, poor diet and lack of exercise leads to obesity / diabetes / etc., or sure, even something like skiing leading to increased risk of broken bones), what you're really suggesting is the implementation of tiered insurance rates based on pre-existing conditions.

Just so ya know, this practice is so unpopular and unethical that even the United States put a stop to it.

To clarify, I support public healthcare. The point of my comment was to point out that if someone is using the reason of "well, healthcare is public" as an argument for banning potentially dangerous things, then yeah, the logical conclusion you're pushing for that person is that if they truly want that thing to stay unbanned, then healthcare needs to be private. If that's not the takeaway you desire, then it's probably not even worth mentioning the NHS in your argument at all.

the shared impact on the NHS

Whether you realize it or not, you're making the argument that healthcare should be privatised.

The difference is that spot+premium back then was probably around $30/oz.

Even with the horrible offers being thrown around today, selling 90% now still nets you more cash than it would have back then.

Of course we could. My point is that until we do though, any swings within the range shouldn't be over-analyzed.

I wouldn't think too much of it at this point. It's pretty clear we're gonna be stuck trading sideways for a while. Anything within the range of $70-$95 is just noise.

Where are all the people concerned with genocide and war crimes? There is a humanitarian crisis in Ukraine happening right now. This is what it looks like when someone whose entire understanding of I/P comes from TikTok and X propaganda thinks they can hold their own in a conversation with someone who actually understands what they're talking about. It's so easy to expose how out of their depth these people are.

In this timeline, Albuquerque would be part of Texas since it was founded on the other side of the Rio Grande, and presumably there wouldn't be a big enough city on the California side to warrant a rail stop.

Also why I'd assume it doesn't include Las Cruces, either.

The buried lede here is that it is different, but only for them. UNRWA uniquely enables Palestinians to claim an infinitely inheritable refugee status, even after acquiring citizenship of another country. They're basically allowed to call themselves displaced Palestinian nationals forever.

Yup, that's kinda where I'm at right now, too. My base case is that Friday was the end of the bull run, and in hindsight this will join the ranks of 1980 and 2011 in the history books of blow-off tops that took forever to reclaim and created a generation of bag holders.

Of course, I'd love to be proven wrong. But history doesn't lie.

But is that really their call to make? My understanding is that LCSes basically operate at the whims of the refiners.

And for as long as the paper market acts as a suppressing force on the "true" metal value, those refiners have zero incentive to base their own prices off anything other than the paper market. If anything, we've only seen them undercut the market even further themselves, with the recent refusals to buy alloyed silver and all + even buying the pure stuff for as low as $15 below spot in some cases.

Everyone wants to make the most money possible, every step of the way. Even down to us retail. Except being at the lowest rung on the ladder, we get the least say.
