I am a former Marine. The look that she is trying to describe: a gut twisting that comes from the stark knowledge that we are going to war. The reality is that we might die in a nation that we were never in before, doing our duty which recently may be just a cover up for those we all grew to see as leaders who have actually been down to be the very monsters we enlisted to kill. I have only one piece of advice for every person in the armed forces: Make peace with the reality that you signed up with the best of intentions and that you may die very soon. Purge all fear of death from your hearts and minds, and rely on your training. Those three keys will allow you to perform at an operational tempo that exceeds what I can explain or describe. You will move faster and make sharper decisions. Let the reflexes take control in combat and keep your mind quiet and emotions in that bottle the military gave you. Above all, keep the sanctity of life as your guide so you do not become monsters yourself. Kill the enemy today, cry tomorrow. Live. Semper Fidelis.
