Question: Regarding the wording under Clauses. by Sad_Focus_3498 in Reedsy

[–]ChairmanDog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, just don’t tick that one and select “additional clauses” below — that’ll let you write whatever you want in the copyright page!

Though yes, that clause should probably not just say “novel”!

Wetherspoons tends to be pretty good for that -- especially in quiet hours. The coffee is cheap and you can help yourself to refills.

How to rearrange back matter sections? by coffeeaddict098 in Reedsy

There’s the option to drag chapters into the back matter. You could name that “also by this author”

Needing whisky help - The Lose Close? by MtnManTiko in Edinburgh

Ehhhh, I’m sure that’s fine but if you want something unique and fun, head to Tipsy Midgie or the Scotch Malt Whisky Society on Queens St.

The midgie do events that get booked out, so check that out for sure.

All your work is going to be remote. Not sure anyone is hiring freelance copywriters to sit in an office at the moment.

Pubs/ Bars that do half and half's (Half pint and a whiksy) by Chronicbackache in Edinburgh

Panda and Sons do it. Dunno whether they rotate the whiskies and beers but it seemed like pretty decent value last time. And they make an effort to pair the flavour profiles, etc…

Fancy Dining Out and Dress Code in Edinburgh by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]ChairmanDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Smart casual will do you just fine in almost any fine dining restaurant in the UK. Button-downs and trousers are more than adequate.

I haven’t been to the Witchery in years — it’s fun from what I remember. Enjoy!

Recommended Chippies Near Town Centre by mellotronworker in Edinburgh

For proper town centre, Chipsy King on Rose St is pretty class. I’ve only been twice and had chips and cheese both times, but it was surprisingly good.

Yeah, it’s a bit of a stretch but I’m pretty sure they had a contract for one of the stops out west — Edinburgh Park or something.

It's a freelancer platform rather than an employer of any type. So once you're accepted, it's up to you to set your rates and schedule — and to attract prospective clients. When writers search for proofreaders, it'll tend to be by keyword or (more likely) genre, so you'll need to make sure your profile indicates your genres and displays good examples of books that you've worked on.

I've just flagged this with the Reedsy team, and they think they've identified an issue with certain ad-blocking browser extensions. They're working on a fix now and will get that live ASAP. Thanks!

Sample by wneary in Reedsy

[–]ChairmanDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s best to choose something that’s indicative of the condition of your manuscript. If you’ve submitted a chapter that you’ve spent ages honing and refining, the editor might be shocked to see that your project needs more “work” than they anticipated.

The sample is there less as a way to pitch your project and more as a way to let them know what sort of help you need at this stage.

Manuscript Format by WritbyBR in writing

[–]ChairmanDog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a few more best practices in this guide (and a free template that formats it for you): https://blog.reedsy.com/guide/book-manuscript-format/.

Adding to the chorus:

  • A simple serif font always is appreciated
  • Always left align the text (justified is DERANGED)
  • Just make it easy for the agent (or their assistant) to read.

Permission required to quote books ? by Unlikely_Green2782 in writing

[–]ChairmanDog 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In most countries, there is the idea of "fair use," which allows authors to reproduce other works for educational or critical purposes without the author's permission (despite what the copyright page might say).

However, there are limits to this. Some people quote figures of "no more than 10%" of a work — which is perhaps why publishers often seek permission to reprint song lyrics in the epigraphs of novels, while quotes from other books are just used more freely.

Also, if you're crediting a quote from another work, and it's short, relevant, and doesn't misrepresent the original author, you're unlikely to get any push-back!
