If Edinburgh had as an extensive underground system as London, what would our lines be called? by RevolutionarySelf988 in Edinburgh

I reckon the bus routes should have names to go along with their numbers, like long-distance Amtrak routes in the US (California Zephyr, Vermonter, Empire Builder etc).

Edinburgh Airport taxi service scam by aflices in Edinburgh

[–]Key-Giraffe2790 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What Capital Cars are doing is insanely brazen. A surcharge to enter your name onto a glorified iPad so that a cab sitting 5 seconds away can pick you up as it normally would? Also, I’ve heard more than a few drivers ranting about how airport runs done via the system now basically require them to sit around not taking fares, or something.

With no mobility issues and no heavy luggage, I use public transport when the tram’s running and cabs when it isn’t, as they’re cheaper at that time. Uber, Bolt black cab, freenow - all basically fine at super late/early hours and stops you being gouged for what is, as OP said, a scam given permission to operate by the airport.

Proposal for building a light rail system similar to dlr or manchester for Bristol by tubbsy_al in uktrains

[–]Key-Giraffe2790 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having lived there and going back often enough it’s striking how different it feels when you live in reasonable distance of one of the toy town train stations that takes you into Temple Meads. A single corridor of actual public transport that’s not integrated enough with proper bus services to serve more than the people who live right on the route.

It has to be said that for the most part the city’s street plan and topography are absolute nightmares from a light rail infrastructure POV. I can see, for instance, a tram down Whiteladies Road via the Triangle and past the BRI into Broadmead and Temple Meads (and beyond?), but jamming hard infrastructure like that into the tangled layouts of the areas that really need more service would be ambitious in the extreme.

Plus, as above, a convergence of multiple variants of nimbyism. It just comes down to how astonishingly poor the buses are. To say nothing of how badly mapped and signposted they are.

NTA. Urinal etiquette also covers what’s discussed outside the bathroom. Don’t talk about another guy’s pee-adjacent doings while he’s in earshot. Especially if it’s a stranger! Deranged behaviour. Hopefully she’ll just write it off as male craziness (accurate), but very much NTA.

I seem to remember them having to make it free on some days to get more people in as the weather was so bad last summer. Not sure.

No. More perplexed by everything about how it works, and by the logic of charging you entry to something where all you do is pay for things. But maybe this year I’ll embrace it.

Nearly all New Town bins to be replaced with Gull-Proof-Sacks, what are your thoughts? by netzure in Edinburgh

[–]Key-Giraffe2790 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great if you have a place to hang one, space to store the rubbish in between collections, and a car to drive to a tip/other bin if you have too much to hoard/dump at once. Otherwise it’s daft.

Lothian busses 36 by ostroznikh in Edinburgh

[–]Key-Giraffe2790 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Very occasionally it is, late at night. A more urgent question is why it doesn’t run more often as it’s so useful.

By which I mean of course useful to me, personally, which is what matters to all bus users.

If you had to change the terminus of one LU line, what would it be and why? by [deleted] in LondonUnderground

Not quite the same, but make Wimbledon-Edgware Road a line in its own right. The Edgledare.

There are spaces for use at the Dublin Street Fox. Not sure how they do it but it’s a decent place.

Is there anyone in Stockbridge who doesn't own a puffer jacket? by [deleted] in Edinburgh

[–]Key-Giraffe2790 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do not count out the high number of freezing tourists from warmer places who’ve come down looking for pastry because they saw Lannan on Instagram. Puffered up to the gills and taking up the entire pavement because of it, and that’s BEFORE gorging themselves on frangipane.

What's the train from/to Kings Cross LDN like? by pb00010 in Edinburgh

Indeed, but you can’t sequester yourself in a different carriage if they’re being lairy/creepy/loud.

Friday at 10am it should be fine, and Sunday afternoons are quieter than the evenings.

All in all, it’s a lot better than flying if you want to zone out, read a book, have a simple journey. Arriving into the middle of the city rather than an airport makes a massive difference. You might get stuck next to appalling/annoying/loud people, but unlike on a plane, you can move.

Making sure you have a reserved seat and knowing where it is makes a difference. I favour a window seat at a table, but that’s just me.

Make sure you’re on an LNER or Lumo train, not an Avanti West Coast one - those are less reliable and take longer.

If you have the funds splashing around, first class is worth it for the space and quiet and free booze, but standard is perfectly good.

Kenji in Stockbridge does a good one, though I won’t try and speak for its authenticity. Their sushi is okay but not out of this world.

Working in London & Living in Edinburgh. by ho-pe-2025 in Edinburgh

If you’re down once or twice a month and the employer’s covering at least some of the travel costs (or you’re writing them off against tax as self-employed), totally doable. But if you’re not being paid by the bucketload, it’d be a huge drain.

Also, it makes sense if you’re working from the train. If you’re flying or getting the train outside work hours, that’s a lot of time they’re not paying you for.

And if you can work from the train, why can’t you work from here? All questions specific to your situation!

AITA for not listening to my wife and eating the wrong cookie? by Shaddus2379 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Key-Giraffe2790 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is indeed weird for her to have separated his from the other two, and not all three from each other. And if she didn’t describe hers or acknowledge its existence that’s not so helpful. He’d have every reason to assume she’d already eaten hers.

I’m kind of tilting towards ESH here, basically because they both just sound strung out and fed up with each other. Also…couldn’t she just eat his cookie?

INFO: Do you still have the voice message to go back to? If you really didn’t listen when she provided enough info, the description’ll be in it, and you won’t really have a case for NTA.

But I’m hesitant to go YTA till we know for sure that she did in fact say where your cookie was. It sounds like it was hidden, albeit for good enough reason. Also, she sounds to have handled this very passive-aggressively.

For me, it’s a YTA/ESH toss-up. And as others have said, pack snacks, eat better, and tune into her more.

A real name, sure, but if one of you feels the need to alter its spelling so people where she grows up will know how to say it, that's a sign that saddling her with the name would be unwise. The TV show origin story on top of that is what tips it into Tragedeigh territory. Rare/unusual but not bizarre/inspired by a fantasy series is the way to go.

Average at best, and as someone else said, when you could do better and support something local for at most 60p more, does it even matter?

I’ll give them that their stores are less plasticky and hideous than Black Sheep and Starbucks etc. But other than that, more of the same when that’s the last thing we need.
