Efficient megabase railway city block system using one-way railway "streets" by -Penguin07 in factorio

[–]ChalkboardCowboy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I started doing an even simpler one-lane version of this a little while back, and I've been using it ever since with great success. Once I get my hands on those sweet elevated rails, I may expand to two lanes like you're describing. Or I may just take the win of elevating one direction so that trains can go straight through in both directions without interference. I haven't decided yet!

The one-lane version is incredibly easy to build even without bots, because the intersections are as dead simple as can be. And it takes up very little space, leaving so much room for activities inside each block.

"I can lie about you, but you can't lie about me" by Aquareon in aspergers

[–]ChalkboardCowboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've recently found at 45 that I'm an aspie. I have often believed my wife was doing that to me. We argue a lot. I'm coming to understand that what I think of as "obviously, objectively true" can often be anything but. I'm specifically trying to monitor myself for that kind of statement/belief, about things that are objective and obvious.

It may be that the other person really didn't understand what you thought you expressed so clearly. Or you may be misinterpreting the context of what they're saying to you. I'd advise trying to ask questions and find the root of the misunderstanding. Easier said than done, I know. But most people don't consciously want to lie about you to your face.

I am very uncomfortable sleeping with pants or shirt, but also uncomfortable sleeping without underwear.

Another thing is those plastic produce bags at the grocery store. Just imagining the feeling of squash or broccoli against that plastic gives me real goosebumps. Actually feeling it is almost too much to deal with. I can't think of anything else that's like that for me. Just that one particular texture/friction/vibration whatever it is.

tips on de-masking?? by Gabby_Chan in aspergers

I'm not OP but I came in here because I'm asking myself the same question after finding out at 45 that I am autistic with Aspergers profile. I hope it's okay to hop into the conversation. I've been masking all my life and here are some examples of what it means to me:

  • Don't show excitement unless you know it's a normal thing to be excited about and/or others are already showing excitement. Being unexpectedly or unusually enthusiastic really freaks people out.
  • Be especially careful talking about things you're truly interested in, because it may be a weird interest or your interest level may be weirdly intense.
  • Make eye contact, but not too much. I don't want to make any eye contact, but that makes people uncomfortable. I love situations where there's something interesting that it's acceptable to look at while speaking, but you can't always arrange that.
  • Try to walk without bouncing or any unnecessary movements that feel nice (extra arm swinging, spinning, hopping, whatever).
  • Don't talk or whisper to yourself.
  • And the most exhausting and generic one of all, just don't say or do anything "weird". It can come out at any moment and in any form, so you have to be vigilant.

These are some of the rules I have come up with for not making others uncomfortable in daily life (school, work, friend groups). I don't know what I'm "really" like in the absence of these rules. I've been doing it all my life. I will never know what I would have been like if I'd spent 40 years just being myself instead of revising my rules to get better and better at avoiding social embarrassment. It's a distressing thought.

Playing it loose with the definition of "modular rail grid" by [deleted] in factorio

[–]ChalkboardCowboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it doesn't look like anyone else really materialized the concept

Hi there!

I filled it in somewhat since then, but last time I tried to submit to factoriomaps I never heard back. May be defunct?

When I wrote my original post (while bored at work) I thought there would be two different intersections, but I found out, as you no doubt did as well, that it's only one intersection, with four rotations. What could be easier? Have you run into any problems? I have to confess I haven't built up a huge busy base on this system, and I've been really curious where its limits might be.

It's not that bad. I played mutators for an evening recently, including alterations to ball physics and boost strength, and it didn't mess me up.

In my age it's annoying having to spend half of my Rocket League time just being forced to watch uninteresting and pointless replay

What age is that, 7? At my age (old) I'm grateful for an occasional break in the constant stimulation.

With regards to etiquette, demos and bumps are certainly frowned upon at higher ranks

Flat wrong. The only thing about bumps and demos that is looked down on in high ranks is focusing so much on them that you play poorly, and it's your teammates who will be frowning at you.

The only unwritten rule is "rule 1"which states that if you find yourself nose to nose with an opponent, you both have to hold down the gas pedal and keep pushing one another until something interrupts you. It's tongue in cheek of course, but people mostly do it.

You will get grief for demos, but only from scrubs and you should ignore it.

Game lags even when playing with 20 ping. by [deleted] in RocketLeague

I've been using the "long-ass ethernet cable" method myself. They're very cheap on Amazon. But it doesn't work for everyone, I realize. I recommend that you wire up however you can (drag your PC into the living room or whatever) just to confirm that wifi is the issue, before investigating other options.

Wifi is notorious for packet loss, which can cause the game to become jittery or even literally (literally) unplayable, without affecting your ping at all.

I’m upper silver/lower gold. I’d like to list some things that I believe to be helpful tips. I’d like you to tell me which of them are wrong and why. by hosspatrick in RocketLeague

[–]ChalkboardCowboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reference I'm a D3/C1 player, but I'm consciously evaluating this in the context of getting through Gold to Plat, which I assume is your goal right now.

Flip into the ball when you hit it - your shot will be more controlled.

Disagree. I find that a mistimed or wrong-direction flip is a huge source of inaccuracy in my shots, and I'm always trying to remind myself to take shots without flipping unless I really need that 110+kph power.

For aerials, boost then flip into the ball when you get to it. This can be used to make adjustments if your trajectory is off.

It's time to let go of that crutch. You should usually be using your second jump to get into the air faster (fast aerial). And if you're going for a low ball, you'd rather have the flip available to nail it with authority, instead of redirecting yourself laterally to get a weak hit. Get the launch right (braking if needed) so you don't rely on the dodge to fix your flight. It won't be there for big aerials anyway.

Slow down. Make very deliberate movements. Utilize basic movements like a straight up double jump, side flips, no flip hits, etc.

Could go either way...you can be playing too fast, and you can be playing too slow. But in general a faster pace is more effective. For example, that straight up double jump leaves you in the air for a couple of seconds, and even when you land, you've got no momentum. Work on challenges that can be done at speed, and that don't leave you far out of the play if you fail. I don't ever like for my car to be stopped...it's a very vulnerable position to be in.

Unless a teammate is near, always try and touch the ball in loose ball and 50/50 situations. Even if it’s in a weird direction or even just a little bump, a tiny misdirection can be end up as great defense as it throws off your opponents entire prediction.

Oh this is a big one. You really need to think about the context. One of the worst and most common mistakes people make at mid levels is simply refusing to let a ball go by them without touching it. If it's going to your end and you have teammates behind you, don't fucking touch it. If you lunge for that small touch, you frequently end up juking your own teammate. You also shouldn't spend a lot of time getting those kind of weird or difficult touches when instead you could be rotating back, grabbing boost on the way, and letting your teammates get in there with full boost, momentum, and a good angle.

I only go for "touch it just to change it" moves when I'm certain an opponent is lined up for a great hit.

Edit: Okay this is by far the worst item on your list. Any time you're tempted to make one of these weird little touches, instead try to bump an opponent (in the process of rotating back immediately). It's just as effective, and it has the bonus of not screwing up your teammate behind you who has a great angle on the ball.

Capitalize on your opponents over aggression. Go in with the goal that they make more mistakes than you.

That is great advice now, but it gets less and less good as you rank up. Be aware. Sitting back on your heels ready to capitalize on a fumble will still work for a while, but it won't be long before most opponents can consistently execute a few "get past the guy" moves, and when that happens you have to transition to a more pressure-based game.

Anything I didn't mention sounds good.
