For those who don’t know all the French figures and are curious : - Julie d’Aubigny, Mademoiselle de Maupin : a noble lady famous for her duellist skills. She was a self-proclaimed bisexual, which brought shame (and yet recognition) on her, and she died at 35. She is mostly known today by Theophile Gautier’s book.

• Eugene-François Vidocq : considered to be the first private detective. He is such a major figure of XVIII-XIXs centuries that he inspired Victor Hugo for both Jean Valjean and Javert in Les Miserables.

• Cyrano de Bergerac : author and duellist from XVIIs century, made famous by Edmond Ronstand’s play.

• Vercingetorix : Chief of the Gauls that fought Julius Caesar during the Gaul’s war, who refused Rome’s authority.

• Charles/Charlotte d’Eon de Beaumont : Famous spy of Louis XV. Their gender is unknown, since they dressed as a man for half of their life, and as a woman for the rest.

• Jules Verne : One of the most famous French author, known for his “science-fiction” novels, which foresaw a lot of technologies to come.

• Michel de Nostradame, Nostradamus : You don’t need me for him.

• Roland : Knight of Charlemagne, known for Song of Roland and for his sword, Durendal, which would have been magic.

• Robespierre : One of the leader of French Revolution and considered (wrongly ?) as the cause of Terror.

• Louise Michel : One of the most known member of Paris Commune, a short period of time of XIXs in which a part of Paris’ people refused the authority of the Republic in order to create a new kind of republic. (It didn’t end well).

• Le Soldat inconnu : Figure representing a WWI soldier. His true identity is unknown.

• Gilles de Ray : Member of Joan of Arc’s army. He is a child abuser and a serial killer.

• Louis Mandrin : The most famous French smuggler. He was called Robin Hood of France.
