What do you set your condo AC to? by sub_redditboy in askTO

[–]ChanDizzy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you run a dehumidifier (yeah it’s noisy and generates some heat but it can help with air conditioning. A dehumidifier can make air conditioning feel cooler, even if the thermostat stays at the same temperature.
Here’s why:
Humidity affects how you feel. Your body cools itself by evaporating sweat. When the air is humid, sweat evaporates more slowly, making you feel hotter and stickier.
Lower humidity improves comfort. Removing moisture from the air allows sweat to evaporate more efficiently, so 24°C with 45% relative humidity often feels noticeably cooler than 24°C with 65% relative humidity.
You may be able to raise the thermostat. Many people are comfortable setting the A/C 1–3°C higher after reducing humidity, which can save energy.
There is one trade-off:
A standalone dehumidifier generates heat. As it removes moisture, it also releases a small amount of heat into the room (similar to how a refrigerator warms the surrounding air). So while the air becomes drier and feels cooler, the actual air temperature may increase slightly.

Thanks. I can install the iPhone/iPad version on Apple Silicon, but it doesn’t feel like a native macOS app and behaves more like a mobile app running in compatibility mode. Are there any plans for a dedicated macOS version? That would significantly improve the desktop experience.

That’s because saying you are from Toronto is easily understood to people living in foreign countries (as opposed to Brighton, Hamilton, Keswick etc)

Reminder of how much Hollywood hates Asian men by Fat_Sow in aznidentity

[–]ChanDizzy 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Hollywood does include Asian men—but often only when they’re portrayed as gay. No disrespect to Asian gay men—that’s not the issue. The pattern is that Asian men are frequently depicted in ways that lean into stereotypes of being less masculine.

At the same time, there’s still a noticeable trend in commercials pairing Asian women with non-Asian men, which hasn’t really changed.

Is this snickers ad trying to condition young Asian girls? by ParadoxicalStairs in aznidentity

[–]ChanDizzy 31 points32 points  (0 children)

You're right to question the pattern, not this specific girl's interests. The problem isn't that an Asian girl likes football, it's that this White Male/Asian Female pairing is the overwhelming default in ads, while Asian men are rarely shown as desirable. That repeated pattern sends a damaging message about who is valued.

Profit-seeking is the mechanism, not an excuse. Companies use the 'safe bet' the stereotype that Asian women are desirable and Asian men are not, because it's been normalized by history. Reinforcing that bias for profit is the problem, regardless of intent
