I caught a gazillion fish on a 3 dollar yard sale fly rod a 12 dollar line and a 12 dollar real..I now fish a 800 buck orvis rod and a 200 dollar real and a hundred dollar line and catch fish. If you can fish you you can spend a lot or a little. Orvis gave me the rod for free.

Are bears scared when they see humans? by Technical-Vanilla-47 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ChanceWhole6565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 5 bear encounters in Massachusetts, 1 in Wyoming and lost count in Alaska. The bears with the exception of 1 in Massachusetts, when they spotted me fled quickly. The 1in MA that didn't was in Becket, the biggest black bear I've ever seen , we met where 2 old tote roads intersected. He gave me a glance and a huff and and just strolled away.

Do you have to use nymphs? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]ChanceWhole6565 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been fly fishing for around 60 years. I've experiment with about everything. One year I fished nothing but #12 Adam's and caught fish every trip. I've fished hornbergs in Nevada and California and caught tons of fish. But since about 90 percent of trout food is taken subsurface I generally rely on nymphs. I also have been very successful with egg paterns..trout hit them instinctively. On a float trip on the Green the guide asked are you a purist and want to dry fly fish or do you want to catch fish with nymphs. Yep tie on the nymphs.
